I'm very disappointed with Dynamite Alex. I was so interested in this game that I bought five of the greenlight bundles it was in strictly for this game. Today when my keys arrived, I immediately installed the game and booted it up. In some ways I'm underwhelmed, and in others, I'm overwhelmed. The first thing I noticed was a lack of native controller support. I thought to myself, "No problem. I'll just break out my trusty Steam controller and get down to business." My experience was that the Steam controller worked but only partially. I still had to use the keyboard for menus, and I never could make the joystick map to the WASD movement controls. For this, the upper left d-pad/trackpad was used. I decided this was a minor aggravation and kept playing. Reading the updates on the store page and the few reviews that are there at this point, I can see that the developer has gone through two control schemes, one only slightly less strange than the first. The "R" for emergency restart of a level should have been a bigger red flag to me than it was, but I figured, "Hey, I love unique, and who am I to judge?" So again, I pressed onward. I learned very early on why the emergency restart mechanism is in place; this game is still very buggy. As you can see in the following image, my character became "stuck" in midair. http://imgur.com/a/YoDIS I waited for a while, pushed every button and key I could find but to no avail. Emergency restart it is! I play through the first level multiple times, and each time, the control response is different. Between button presses that didn't register at all and a delay between button presses and action, I really started to lose hope for the game. I exited out of big picture and turned off the Steam controller, deciding to see what keyboard controls had to offer. I prefer to play with a controller, but when deciding to review a game, I like to be fair and evaluate a game for what it was actually designed to do as opposed to what I would like it to do. Right off the bat, though, I have another issue. I've already installed the game once, so I was confused when the "completing installation" box comes up again. Minutes later, it's still there, reading no percentage of completion, but the loading screen is running behind it. Nothing to do for it except to shut down and restart, so I did. At this point, I was severely underwhelmed with the control scheme and overall gaming mechanics. Simplistic doesn't necessarily mean bad. I'm a fan of developers who don't overextend themselves or overpromise only to find that they can't deliver. Minimize if necessary to make the project manageable, but whatever you decide to ultimately undertake, do it well. I enjoy simplistic at times, but when it's that simplistic and still doesn't work, there's a big problem. I then began to look around to determine if there was anything at all that I did like about the game, and this is where the "overwhelmed" part of my review comes into play. The soundtrack is very annoying and "tinkling" which to me sounds like an ice cream truck. When I look around and see the odd color scheme, I again think "ice cream truck" or perhaps even circus. I just don't know what the developer was going for here, because there is a very odd mix of color schemes, from pastels and hot pinks to reds, blues and blacks, not to mention solid yellow buildings with another shade of yellow for outlining. It's a very odd mix of pastel and primary colors. When you look at it overall, it's very "busy" and it's destracting. The strange level design doesn't help with this. As a player, it seems like buildings and coin traps are placed without an overall design concept, just "filling holes" so to speak. The character design is not impressive, either, so at this point, I decided to call it quits. All in all, I simply can't recommend Dynamite Alex. I do hope, however, that the developer will address these issues. I would be happy to give it another try.
Your own personal MS paint nightmare
I got nothing positive to say. It's an aberration of a game. I can't even tell foreground from background, just a disgusting mess of colors. Accompanied by an obnoxious soundtrack Its functional enough that i can tell some retro platformer influences. AVGN has some of the same hazards. Still the gameplay isn't even the worst thing about it, it's just bland level design. The enemies aren't satisfying to get rid of, the jumping doesn't feel great. A roll that is not a dash nor a dodge, and has a very specific usage. Even worse is that you double tap to get a roll.
Simple game. But still quite bugged and bad.
The finest part of game might be music - it's really good for 8 bit kind. Story is... I don't really know, cause texts disappeared quickly and dev said game is not about story. So gameplay... Z and X are really bad buttons to set. My hand was hurting after some time, and trust me I spend a lot of time playing and never got that feeling. Gameplay is boring after 20 minutes, because of controls as well as if you press one direction quickly twice, you roll. But same goes for taping left, then right quickly. Walljumping that doesn't feel always right (character spinning and falling). That's not all. Shooting is really useless mostly. It only takes some time to kill enemies (because you need to stop and shoot 3/4 times) and it's faster to just avoid them. Also, boss-fights. In 3 of them you can stand in one place and boss won't hit you. I almost enjoyed playing, but those bugs got me frustrated as well as last level.
Where you need to keep altitude in order to avoid getting damage from moving 'obstacles', before actually fighting boss.
Bugs that get you stuck in wall or... I had final boss fight, I pressed R for restart and it kept playing sound and animation for death. PS: Gameplay for about 1-1,5 hour.
FIRST OFF this game is bad. but its a fun kind of bad. its clearly one of the first games this guy has made ( or at least with how its made i should hope it is) the controls are tight which is amazing considering the only downside is how glitchy the rest of the game can be, i.e gettign stuck in walls, glitching during wallhops and getting stuck and such things like that. THAT BEING SAID this game is a guilty pleasure of mine i have a lot of fun playing this game. and even another 40mins just now after getting my steam key so i can write this review. i recommend this game if you're looking for a cheap game thats (in my opinion) so bad its good. Ryan i look forward to seeing where you'll be and what games you will have made 5 to 10 years down the line i got high hopes for you
Not bad, is a bit fun 2D platform game you can give it a try
Dynamite Alex is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one is particularly badly made, possibly one of the worst. The game ostensibly is about the developers waifu/imaginary girlfriend, and plays a lot like an early 1990's Apogee/iD software shareware platformer (Cosmo, Duke Nukem), but that's either being too kind to this, or too unkind to Apogee software (even if they are now just resorting to nostalgia gouging gamers on Steam, their games cost 10 times more than this!). It's a bug riddled mess, within the first few minutes of starting I got stuck in a wall and had to restart the game. It goes downhill from there. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. Bewilderingly, the game doesn't include proper audio controls, so you can't turn off the annoying background music, you'll need to alt+tab out and stop the music using the Windows sound mixer. This is obviously not okay and it's unclear why the developers chose not to include this basic feature. The controls and game handling are notably very clunky and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game library/engine, Delphi (I'm not making this up, it's written in Borland Delphi for crying out loud). Delphi isn't really intended for making games, and thus has very limited capabilities, which go some way to explaining the poor quality of the game. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use the wrong tools. Might as well bake a cake with a screwdriver. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Dynamite Alex is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer sweeps in to breach Valve guidelines with a startling, and troubling announcement that not only do they have no idea how to make video games, but they have no idea how their own game was made. Decompiling the game exe as part of my routine analysis of garbage trashware from incompetent amateur Starbucks employees reveals the underlying game was made with Delphi... this is irrefutable fact. In all fairness, the "developer" probably didn't know this because they've used a construction kit of some kind sitting on top of a chunk of Delphi code to make the game. So how could they know? And that, right there is the problem with all this garbage that pollutes Steam. The people who make this trash have no idea what they're doing. They're not qualified to make games. It's not to say they shouldn't make the games, we all have to learn somehow. But we don't take our learning exercise and dump it in front of the whole world to be pointed at and ridiculed. This kind of junk should never leak beyond containment stores like Itch, where developers get free participation trophies for every RPG Maker asset flip they pump out. Publishing this garbage onto Steam, as the "developer", who plainly announces he has no idea what he's doing, is harmful. It's harmful because it pollutes the Steam store. It makes it harder for gamers to find games from developers who really do know what they are doing. It makes it harder for developers who do know what they're doing to find an audience. And overall, it gives "indie" developers a bad name. All of this is harmful. And the developers one line confession here, embarrassing as it is, hammers that home. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
Pros: +It has a cute design, at least based on the screenshots. Cons: -IT IS THE MOST UNPLAYABLE GAME THAT HAS EVER BEEN RELEASED ON STEAM. -Keyboard controls are garbage, attempting to use Steam Control Mapping to a gamepad creates even more control garbage. -This UI, was this originally released for Windows 3.11 For Workgroups?
