About
Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.

Not just generated geometry -- a whole simulated world. Generated rise and fall of civilizations, personalities, creatures, cultures, etc. Infinite hours of gameplay.
Now with beautiful pixel graphics!
Learn the basics with in-game tutorials
A lifetime “living” project - created/updated since 2003, with no end in sight
Generate your unique world and manage a bustling colony of dwarves, even as they probably mine towards their eventual demise.
A new endless hobby, just for you!

The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam! Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, despite threats of starvation, dragons, and madness.

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong.
The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more.
It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.
Remember: Losing is fun!

This is still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music provided. A few bells and whistles won’t change its essence.
Classic Dwarf Fortress mod-artist Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman collaborated with artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood to create an all-new sprite pack for the game, which they continue to add to regularly.
Dwarf Fortress also has hours of music in a two-volume soundtrack by Dabu and Simon Swerwer, including tracks in the Dwarvish language!
It's never been easier to start playing! We've improved the new player experience with the addition of tutorials to guide you through building your first fort and keeping your dwarves happy.

Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in their generated mountain. Your dwarves will need a steady supply of food and beer, but they’ll also need your guidance in surviving attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, or even the dead.
Craft treasures and furnitures from various materials
Establish a barony and support the increasingly demanding nobility
Read your dwarves’ thoughts to keep them happy
Build floodgates to divert water for farming, and/or prevent magma mishaps
Build structures and watch your dwarves discover and build their culture, like taverns, libraries, temples, honey, wax, pottery, animal training, bookbinding, and more.
Go anywhere! Explore any civilization, earn a reputation, and recruit followers to join you
Experience your fortress and the simulation in a new, more embodied way
Explore mythical dungeons to find magical items, artifacts, and fill your quest journal
Hints of mythology and magic as a start of future simulation enrichment to come
An additional hour of music from Dabu and Simon Swerwer, presented as a second volume of the original soundtrack

Your dwarves will fight against zombie hordes, forgotten beasts, lycanthropes, titans, and [spoilers]. They'll also fight against starvation, thirst, fatigue, poor moods, tavern brawls gone awry, dead pets, dead dwarf children, incorrect magma digs, spies, bards, aquifers, and your own human limits as you try and learn the systems to keep the fun going another season. Losing is part of the fun. An opportunity to strike the earth once more, take the lessons learned and subject a whole new population of dwarves to the vagaries of a simulation that fill the Histories of Determination and Avarice. Dwarf Fortress is a dense and deep cavern of systems that interact in emergent ways to create an incredible experience that has defined a genre and built a following of millions of players and artists worldwide. The Steam release addresses some of the greatest learning cliffs players previously faced. The revenues brought in and expanded team at Kitfox have secured the creators' livelihood and brought consistent refinements, updates, and new features to a game that had already had a rock solid foundation.

I've loved this game for ages but have always been playing for free on the website and I'm happy to finally have some spare money to be able to buy a copy.
This game is very hard to play, you have to understand the needs of the dwarves and then make sure they can get those needs from certain gameplay,,, but learning that is much of the fun. This game really has been (for over 20 years and i used to play it back towards the start) doing the things the industry does now but years and years before. This game will allow you to build a fortress where you can amass hundreds (depending on your pc) of humanoids and try to keep them alive through attacks from all fantasy creatures you can imagine. It also generates an entire fantasy world (with the history of that world) that history progresses as you play different forts so that the monsters, dragons, other fantasy tropes also all live their lives and everything is tracked and interacts down to the tiniest detail... golbins give birth, their offspring die or climb the ranks to become generals of armies that invade other places... and your fort will be the difference in these monsters being defeated or taking over the entire world. The game really is great, hard, frustrating, and it generates stories (if you know how to track those stories). im hoping as the game goes on it will have better interfaces for your fort and for knowing whats going on in the world around you. not that you cant do it now, but it would help to have better interfaces/experiences to really process the information. I cant say enough good things about this game. it has been the inspiration for so many other games and without this game the gaming space wouldnt be what it is today. main pc - intel i9 140000k 64gig ram nvidia 4900 laptop - review was written on laptop
Picked this game up a few years ago and I return occasionally to give it another shot. I like learning new things and figuring things out. The dopamine hit when I finally figure out how to set up my bees for honey, or get my latest supply chain running is fun. That said, this game feels like an effort in futility much of the time. Losing is a big part of the experience according to the Devs, so I get what they are doing, but after 12-15 hours I need to set the game down and switch it up.
accidently dug too deep and let's just say i had to make a new fort very fun dwarf game a must have in any dwarf chad's collection
pain
A expert focus on bug fixes and QOL changes before adding new content, NO PAID DLC with dozens of DLC level expansions to the game. Buy it, you wont regret it. If this was a paradox game all these new features would be 15 DLC by now. but you get it all for one price probably forever. BUY THE GAME.
