Dustforce DX

A tight precision platformer with great level design and controls. I simply love the music as well, it's so good.

Dont take me wrong, the game is nice and interesting but I am not a big fan of this slow movement with this inertia.

As much as I enjoyed Dustforce overall, the movement wasn’t personally interesting enough to carry an experience this long. You can jump, double jump, wall jump, dash, slide down slopes, and execute a light or heavy melee attack. Any speed you previously had will be carried over into subsequent actions. A promising specimen, but it blows its load too quickly. Want to scale a slanted wall? Try two! How about smacking enemies for crossing spike pits? Do that a few times in every temple level! Sliding down slopes never gets old, but there’s minimal enemy variety and hazard types, so using momentum to jump or dash further is the extent of the game’s depth. Watching top speedruns or your personal best after clearing a stage is never not satisfying. All the better if you have a friend to compete with, but high-level play is often about frame-perfect inputs to cut corners along a linear path. It won’t be long before all you’re doing is executing the route instead of being challenged with your moveset knowledge. To be fair, most platformers feel like rhythm games when you know what you’re doing, which is why the best ones offer a variety of challenges to prevent stagnation. I’ve never understood the appeal of platformers where the only way of increasing challenge is by reducing the leeway allowed for inputs. Dustforce thankfully doesn’t require intense precision for most of the game, but it does fall into that trap eventually. I spent over 30 hours SS-ranking the entire base game and the first of the secret “difficult” stages, yet I wouldn’t be able to describe most stages individually even though they are fun to speedrun. The infectious soundtrack that keeps playing upon death did wonders to pull me into a flow state. Dustforce is undeniably great at what it does, so if you aren’t bothered by the absence of noteworthy obstacles in your platformers, go check it out!

One of the hardest games I've played and I will probably never be able to beat it but it's still a lot of fun and the music is 10/10
