If you find the background distracting, turning off all the graphics will fix that issue. Each run takes about an hour and a half. The difficulty I would rate 3/5, so if you are skilled at all with roguelikes it will probably take you only 2 to 3 attempts to beat the game. Nice change of pace, good game!
A fun game with a dev who works to fix issues as they pop up. Would recommend.
Dungeons of Clay is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This shovelware platformer is painfully generic and doesn't differentiate in any meaningful ways from most of the pack. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the game resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is often used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. That's right, only 3. This is a pitiful enough number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is remarkable, but also to be expected. This complete and utter rejection of the game from gamers should be a keen information point for anyone considering buying shovelware like this. Gamers just didn't take this seriously, and for good reason. Dungeons of Clay has the almost unethical price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games, let alone the sheer number of free games available on Steam. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend.
Wired Xbox 360 controller doesn't work. Half the buttons don't register. I would update this review if this is fixed...
Good fun. Not to difficult. Good for a quick brain flush :D
Time killer. Can't say whether or not it's worth the 10 dollars, but is nice if you have free time. Bit repetative and guns don't really seem to do any damage, a good and bad thing about this game, but overall is nice.
Great game. Would definitely recommend. Has some interesting mechanics. Personally I find it a pretty tough game though that might be different for you. There's some cool randomization mechanics in it as well. A lot of games seem to be more of the same nowadays, it's refreshing to see new unique mechanics in the indie scene the past years.
SNAPSHOT
$0.99 game with a $9.99 price tag
OVERALL - 0.99 / 10

PROS
+ unique artstyle
CONS
- painfully easy gameplay - meaningless items / stats - horrid UX
FULL REVIEW
Honestly this game seems like was released immediately after being code complete when 99% of the development time was spent on the artstyle / vibe. The artstyle, while interesting, ends up being an impediment to gameplay instead of a benefit. For example, it's really hard to tell at times what all is actually harmful to the player - are these floating orbs enemy / friendly projectiles or are they just random things flying around for no reason? Aesthetic choices aside, the UX itself is some of the worst I've seen in a long while. From knowing when ANYTHING is getting hit (friend or foe) to the game actually realizing you've finished the level there is nothing in this game that makes you feel good about playing it. I'm not even sure why the game needs to generate each level as they're all so similar and forgettable that I wouldn't have even noticed if it re-used the same one each time. On top of this, many parts of the game seem to be at a delay as if the only intent is to inflate your time in game. For instance, the game takes a few seconds to actually realize you've killed all enemies in a level, and the "wheel of fate" sequence afterwards also takes time to spin up and wind down even when you use the shortcut the devs provide to skip it. This game also claims to have "full controller support" but I abandoned using it almost immediately because of how bad it was. It seems clear that the game was built around using the mouse as the controller inputs just move the cursor around in the menu without any added benefit. Using the d-pad made the cursor jump around the screen without actually selecting anything in the menu (lol), and for some reason the only way to then use the menu is to use the RIGHT analog stick only which seems like the most offensive choice the devs could have made yet at the same time is apt for what this game turned out to be. On top of all of this the items, stats, and weapons in this game are comically bad and essentially meaningless, which combined with boss fights that have almost no mechanics behind them makes the entire game as forgettable as can be. Almost everything in the game gives minuscule stat bonuses that have at best a negligible impact on the game, meaning you can realistically skip everything and still beat it in under 2 hours without issue. Or, you can just save automated Steam support the hassle of having to refund this and not buy it in the first place.
