За карточки, конечно, спасибо. Но есть и более интересные представители жанра. Музыка - ужас.
is Dungeon of Zolthan mang.
Boring
Dungeon of Zolthan is a deliberately compact and old-school Metroidvania that channels the spirit of classic arcade platformers rather than trying to modernize or reinvent the genre. Developed by Robert Alvarez and published by New Reality Games, the game is upfront about its modest ambitions, offering a tightly scoped dungeon crawl focused on exploration, simple combat, and incremental ability upgrades. It presents itself as a throwback experience, designed for players who value straightforward mechanics, clear structure, and nostalgic sensibilities over narrative depth or audiovisual spectacle. The premise is minimal but functional: you descend into the dungeon of the powerful mage Zolthan, navigating a network of interconnected rooms while searching for the abilities and paths needed to reach him. Storytelling is sparse and largely implicit, leaving the focus squarely on movement and discovery. Rather than guiding the player through a linear sequence of events, the dungeon opens gradually as new powers are unlocked, encouraging backtracking and re-evaluation of previously visited areas. This sense of spatial familiarity is central to the experience, as players slowly build a mental map of the dungeon’s layout. Exploration is the game’s strongest pillar. The dungeon is divided into a relatively small number of rooms, but each is designed to test platforming fundamentals such as timing, positioning, and enemy avoidance. Progression is gated by a handful of abilities—such as improved jumping or movement options—that expand how players traverse the environment. While the number of upgrades is limited, each one meaningfully changes navigation, reinforcing the core Metroidvania loop of returning to earlier areas with new capabilities. The scope is intentionally restrained, but the sense of growth remains tangible throughout the journey. Combat in Dungeon of Zolthan is uncomplicated and rooted in pattern recognition. Enemies follow predictable behaviors, and encounters are more about positioning and patience than reflex-heavy action. This design keeps the challenge readable and fair, especially for players who may be less interested in high-speed combat. Boss fights act as clear milestones, testing the player’s understanding of movement and enemy patterns rather than demanding elaborate strategies. While these encounters lack cinematic flair, they serve their purpose as skill checks that punctuate progression through the dungeon. Visually, the game adopts a stark pixel-art style that emphasizes function over detail. Environments are clean and readable, making hazards and enemies easy to identify at a glance. This simplicity aids gameplay but also highlights the game’s limited production values, as backgrounds and animations can feel bare compared to more contemporary indie platformers. The aesthetic evokes early console and arcade titles, which will appeal to players drawn to that era, though others may find it visually underwhelming. The audio design follows a similar philosophy. Sound effects are direct and utilitarian, providing clear feedback for jumps, attacks, and damage. The music leans toward retro-inspired tracks that maintain momentum without drawing too much attention to themselves. While neither soundtrack nor sound design stands out as a defining feature, both complement the game’s nostalgic tone and keep the focus on gameplay. In terms of pacing, Dungeon of Zolthan is concise and respects the player’s time. A full playthrough can be completed in a relatively short span, making it well-suited for players looking for a focused experience rather than a sprawling commitment. This brevity does limit replayability, as there are few alternative paths or playstyles to explore once the dungeon is fully mapped. However, achievements and the inherent appeal of improving one’s efficiency can provide some incentive for repeat runs. Ultimately, Dungeon of Zolthan succeeds by understanding its niche. It does not attempt to compete with larger, more ambitious Metroidvanias in terms of scale or innovation. Instead, it delivers a compact, accessible dungeon crawl built on solid fundamentals and retro charm. Players seeking depth, narrative complexity, or visual spectacle may find it lacking, but those who appreciate classic platforming, clear progression, and a no-frills design philosophy will find Dungeon of Zolthan to be a satisfying and focused experience. Generic platformer with minimal, retro artstyle. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Controls feel somewhat cheap
