Excellent game. Expect to reset entire levels, and have fun doing so.
Good game. It's kinda long-term planning/puzzle-y for a RPG, as you don't regenerate health out of combat for example. So decisions in earlier levels can really affect outcome in later ones, including not being able to finish.
Fun combat puzzle / resource management game, plenty of secrets and clever mechanisms to explore.
I just want to say that this game is great. But before you buy the game, know that you WILL have to restart from the beginning. Multiple times. People in negative reviews seem to describe the game as "trial and error" - which I disagree with. Nothing in this game needs trial and error, with the exception of needing to walk into rooms in order to know what's in them, which is dumb but map progress stays between restarts thankfully. Some custom holds (yes, those exist!) will fix this issue for you which is nice. This entire game is fully deterministic, so any progress you will make past previous runs you've done will be solely through better play. Optimal decisions can be somewhat ridiculous to calculate, too - so there's almost always room to improve the order in which you make actions far, FAR beyond just beating the hold. For example,
it's actually optimal to skip the first shield in the base game, which is very counter-intuitive and the game will actually ridicule you if you don't get it.
Overall, this game is great - but you need a lot of mental fortitude if you want to get anywhere in it. You'll get irrecoverably stuck many times and need to replay the whole game (or at least half of it) again.
DROD RPG <3
Excellent puzzle game with tons of replay value.
I would only be repeating the deep explanations available in other comments if I really tried to explain why I enjoy this game, highly recommended. Even if you don't want to spend money on the main campaign I recommend trying the free levels made by other players, if the design clicks with you this game can easily give you fun for weeks, if not months.
Nice game!
Do you like DROD? Do you like old-school puzzles-disguised-as-roguelikes like Tower of the Sorcerer or DungeonUp? Voila.
Highly recommended for fans of puzzle games. Worth the price for the main game alone but the added holds that can be downloaded off Caravel's site makes it even more worthwhile.
