To me this is one of the games that feels really unique, like you haven't played anything else like it. It sort of the opposite of Puzzle Quest. In Puzzle Quest, you do RPG things using puzzle mechanics. In DROD RPG, you do puzzle things using RPG mechanics. The whole thing is a giant interconnected puzzle that using deterministic RPG mechanics. The only thing you control is doing things in the right order. The number of choices you have becomes stagering though. It's hard to imagine how a game like this was designed, as it seems like it is extremely balanced. It is possible to play so bad that you have to start the whole game (or at least half of it) over. It happened to me once. It's honestly not as big a deal as it seems though, it's kind of part of the fun. Took me 18 hours to beat.
Mind-blowing mega hard ( tons of decisions, optional stuff ) RPG puzzle game, just like all the other DRODS, + RPG elements. DROD series is probably the hardest among puzzles games, no joking - so prepare for real brain work if you buy this. 9/10

[Note I first played the game after its original release in 2008, and have played it for numerous non-steam hours since] A unique game which is both challenging and very fun in its own way. Endless replayability with some absolutely top-notch usermade levelsets, as well as a brilliant base game. Incorporating both RPG and puzzle elements, this iteration of the DROD franchise is definitely worth playing. 17 plucky Tuenans out of 19.
Great game indeed. Have to figure out the best way to get through all the doors and monsters. Using least of health and keys. Friendly interface with unlimited undo in the room and fast save/load helps you concentrate on solving. While your action is mostly just move in the 8 directions with occasional opportunity to use som a helper item it still provides plenty room for thinking.
DROD RPG is a really fun and unique optimization game. It's a concept that seems like it would be tough to make work - essentially a single puzzle that spans many hours and hundreds of rooms. However, the game is very well designed to generally keep things challenging without forcing you to go back and repeat a ton of content - at most you'll need to go back a few rooms, maybe to the start of your current floor. Generally, even if you scrape through a boss with only a little bit of health left and most of your keys gone, you'll be able to beat the next floor still with careful decision making.
It's not like the puzzle DRODs at all. There is satisfaction getting to the end of a stage, but it took me multiple replays of each stage working out what was to come and then playing through the level. There are really no clues to help navigate your way through a level. I'm still not sure I used the portable orb in the right place!
Excellent game. Expect to reset entire levels, and have fun doing so.
Fun combat puzzle / resource management game, plenty of secrets and clever mechanisms to explore.
Highly recommended for fans of puzzle games. Worth the price for the main game alone but the added holds that can be downloaded off Caravel's site makes it even more worthwhile.
