DROD RPG was a mistake. I like the DROD series, in concept. And then they go ahead and create puzzles that are just too difficult for me, and I can't skip them. I never got past the 2nd to last area of The City Beneath, they always do this. DROD RPG is like a standard DROD game, except the enemies don't move, ever. When you bump into them or run your sword into them, you start a back and forth of damage until one of you dies. You can get stat ups and better gear in the dungeon. For the most part, it's interesting and somewhat fun. Except it's way too easy to play the game in such a way that the game becomes impossible and you have to restart a room, a floor, even the entire game. There are far too many ways for you to dead-end yourself. The difficulty spikes make it easy to lose all your health. Keys are a limited resource that also make it easy to get locked out of rooms and secrets. And if you want to be thorough and get most of the secrets too? Forget it, even more difficult. I've restarted the 6th floor at least 5 times, restarted the game once, and no matter what I do I keep running into brick walls because of the game design. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who isn't pursuing a room by room walkthrough, which doesn't exist and wouldn't be that fun anyway. I've given this game enough chances, I'm uninstalling it. Sorry Caravel Games, but DROD RPG is bad. And I'm less likely to buy games in the series past TCB since your design polices have gone downhill as the years have gone on.
Fun concept, however you've got a resource you must carefully manage the whole game: your health. Screw up with health management in the first half of the game, and it becomes impossible to beat when you're expected to tank certain damage to continue. This is what happened to me and I played as carefully as I could. I avoided what enemies I could, and made sure to always get the first hit. Then I got to Rule 6, did everything I could, and found I didn't have the health to tank the boss and continue. I'm not starting all over. The game would have been so much better if it was redesigned to be linear with each Rule (level) giving you a set amount of health. Mess up and can't beat it? Simply restart the Rule. Of course this means you can't backtrack. If the idea of being almost certainly forced to restart the game halfway through to better optimize early gameplay sounds fun, and the style of game sounds fun, then check this out.
I like puzzles and I like RPG games, so I thought I might like this one. I was wrong. The game is a resource optimization game, where the resource to optimize is your hit points. The combat is entirely deterministic, with tooltips telling you how much HP you will lose fighting the monsters. So if you see a 15HP health potion behind a wraithwing that will take 23 health to kill, optimal strategy is to ignore it until you have better weapon and/or ATK and/or defense. So far so good -- but now suppose the wraithwing is guarding a door which will cost a yellow key to enter. Is it worth paying a net 7 HP plus a yellow key just to see what's on the other side? You can't tell except by trial-and-error. In my ~1 hour of play I managed to get into a situation where I didn't have enough hitpoints to kill anything else, so game over, start from the beginning and play better this time. The intended playstyle seems to be (1) learn where the good pickups are (2) use your knowledge to plan an optimal route (3) win. But that's not the gameplay I was expecting -- to me trial-and-error is the antithesis of puzzle games and redo-from-start is the antithesis of RPG games. So a "no" from me. Play the other DRODs instead, they are pure puzzle.
You're probably going to look at this and think... uh... Rogue-like? Final Fantasy clone? There are actually very few games like this. The only one I know about that has the same type of game mechanics is an obscure game called Tower of the Sorceror. This is basically a resource-management puzzle game. You have to logically determine the best order of attacking monsters and collecting power-ups. I'm now playing through it my second time. An ingenious game to be sure, and so much thought has been put into the design. There are no reflexes required--purely turn-based--but turns are performed instantly after you press a key. So it doesn't have the slow pace of other strategy games.
Drod Rpg is a Classic Rpg game. First thing you have to do the tutorial, cause the controls of this game are a little bit unusual. You use to move your character with the numeric pad + QW + the mouse. So do first this to know how the game works. Is only 2 minutes to learn the controls. But if have a laptop, there is an option on the menu too, cause this mode is for Desktop. Well i hope you know now how to control your hero, armed only with his sword, go and investigate the dungeons. In you way, you will find a lot of upgrades, to easy kill a lots of enemies,What will appears on your path. Is not a complicated game, just try to find the exit on the different dungeons, you are going to find in your way. Hidden keys, and a few, not too difficult puzzles. Take care with the electric squares, and try to get all the upgrades you can, cause the enemies increase his power everytime you pass your current level to the next. If you like Classics RPG´s you absolute enjoy this one.
DROD RPG is probably my favorite installment of the DROD series. It is technically an RPG game but could be more appropriately thought of as a gigantic optimisation puzzle. involving intense micromanagement of the usual stats like health, attack power and defence power. If you manage to finish the main campaign, the Caravel Forum contain many more user-created levels you can download, most of which are terribly, terribly difficult. I prefer to play the game using a spreadsheet so I can calculate the optimal path as best as I can. I can guarantee that this game will not appeal to everyone, but it is absolute crack to fans of complex puzzle-solving! (Ignore the steam stats, I played this game for countless hours before its steam release.)
DROD RPG: Tendry's Tale
DEF? GR? Wtf?!
Mind-blowing mega hard ( tons of decisions, optional stuff ) RPG puzzle game, just like all the other DRODS, + RPG elements. DROD series is probably the hardest among puzzles games, no joking - so prepare for real brain work if you buy this. 9/10
