Behind the inconsistent art style and plain UI, the game hides depth supported by unique mechanics. It's card game, but there is no deck. Instead cards have two halves which can do different things and power each other. Either of these halves can be modified by upgrades along with the entire card. Once you use either half, the card gets discarded. Choosing when to rest to redraw your hand becomes an important tactical decision. The fun of the game comes from creating powerful cards and combos through various upgrades (hero, card and card section upgrades) and just enjoy seeing your enemies melt. Outside of the unique mechanics, it plays similarly to other roguelikes, except the runs are not fully random (e.g. some rewards/enemies are tied to specific missions), but thankfully there is plenty of content before it feels repetitive. I also very much liked that you can time when to initiate the boss fight, just be warned it grows in power if you take too long. Content wise, there are a lot of heroes to choose from (you pick 3 for each run) with each having a different playstyle. The battles are tactical and just the right amount of difficulty. There are a few negatives worth mentioning. I was not a fan of the corruption mechanic that some enemies have, especially with heroes that stack up armor. The reason is that you need to remove corruption by attacking allies and armor actually becomes a hindrance to you. The unlocks of heroes is a bit slow and some battles, like the elemental one, feel quite unbalanced. That said, overall I liked Dreambreaker. It introduced some new interesting mechanics, the combos are fun and it successfully scratches that tactical itch.
The positive
+ Cards have two halves with different effects + Fun to create powerful combos with upgrades
The neutral
* Some battles could be more balanced. * Some English translations are not the best.
The negative
- Not a fan of the corruption mechanic of some enemies. While interesting, it comes with its own unique problems.
Conclusion:
While a bit visually rough around the edges, Dreambreaker is still a competent tactical game with a good amount of content and unique card mechanics. Recommended.
