super jeuxc
At first, the only reason I got this game was because Roope Tamminen was involved. But after sitting down and playing through all the other short games, I think they all did a good job. You can tell they were made by indie developers, there are some limitations and bugs here and there. For example, in Gallerie, I encountered a bug that made my character super fast, which actually made it really easy to avoid enemies (a blessing, if you ask me). But if you keep these quirks in mind while playing, it’s fun to see how each creator expresses their unique art style and approach to horror.
Really fun and varied set of games, with a creative framing device
pretty unique games in this one! always unsure how i feel about the overarching story of the 'main' game but it doesn't really sway how i feel about these too badly.
Dread X 5 is pretty awesome, and arguably the best game in this indie anthology series. I think Dread X 4 was packaged together a bit more memorably, but the production values on 5 are just wonderful. The idea of the game taking place in kind of an interstellar Chuck E. Cheese is so weird, and I love that the comic you unlock slowly tells the story of what's going on so you can piece it together. It's up there with the better "wraparound games." Having completed all 5 Dread X titles, I always notice some theme seems to unconsciously emerge from the games. In this game, the theme that appears is kind of an art deco motif. The best games here have either a meta story or actual art staging. There are, of course, a couple pointless games. You basically walk around this sci fi children's play place collecting comic pages which lead to puzzle areas that unlock presents. You bring the presents back to the center area to light a candle and unlock one of twelve games. I love the concept, but you have to expect the unexpected with these. Sometimes you will uncover a true gem, and other times you'll just end up with a glorified walking sim or incomprehensible weirdness. I can at least say that the most unplayable and esoteric games on here are still miles better than the worst games on the earlier Dread X titles. Actually, the worst game on here is probably still as good as most of the games on Dread X 1 or 2. Game ratings, from best to worst (No spoilers): Gallerie: This one is pretty amazing and feels way bigger than what you usually get on these collections. It's seperated into three chapters and has you exploring an art gallery while a strange voice whispers ASMR tones through an earpiece. I like that the earpiece sort of clues you in on the next steps, and there's some pretty intense puzzle elements that take a bit of time to figure out. There are chase sequences that are also pretty hard and some unique mechanics like flashing lights to stun enemies. The graphics are also just phenomenal, full of artistic fluorishes that really make it a joy to look at. In comparison to the average Dread X game, it's a masterpiece. It's overall not really the scariest on here though. We Never Left: This is truly inspired and the scariest game on this list. To even talk at length about it is to spoil it, but it's a mixture between 3D exploration and navigating a text adventure on a 3D computer. The way it reveals itself actually got the hairs on my arms standing on end, and that is truly an accomplishment because I don't get scared easily. Vestige: This is very similar to We Never Left, but has a different kind of meta game similar to Tony Hawk. The actual game play is a lot of fun, and there's a mechanic that you use that acts as a mix between a challenge and jump scare. I loved the idea and the execution was great, I just wish it was longer and the ending was a little better. Rotten Stigma: This is really cool if you can get past the obviously bad graphics. It's like a mini Silent Hill adventure where you wander around some pool area and solve inventory-based puzzles. There is gun combat and it's overall really fun to figure out, though it has far from the best production values of the games on this list. Book of Blood: I loved this for the atmosphere. You are a carnival attendant after hours who happens to have an occult book sitting nearby. The production values are pretty awful but the game play is so interesting I just didn't care. The game has a little device you use to burn pages into a book, but you also have to explore the carnival grounds to turn the power back on as an entity chases you. I won't spoil the whole thing, it's great but the ending could have been a little better and I wish you actually explored the carnival grounds more. Karao: This is a weird one. You're in some slavic town that slowly erupts into random geometric shapes as you shoot at the same woman over and over again. It works as kind of a mental journey, since you're constantly moving around in pitch darkness with spotlights and strobe effects highlighting the next area to visit. It's not really scary though. Spirit Guardian: This has bad production values but great puzzles. You're wandering around what looks like a preschool solving puzzles as you are lead around by a ghost. I like that the puzzles are all over the place and make you explore, but the stealth mechanics are terrible and I had no idea what to do at the end because it's totally unclear. Interim: I love the idea of this, as it looks like a 3DO game with lots of flashy neon graphics and FMV live action bits. I got stuck at the beginning, I think, due to a glitch. beyond that you wander a strange landscape with bouncing eyeballs as an "interim" but I guess maybe it's more spiritual in theme than anything resembling a concrete story. It's also really short and felt pointless despite the great presentation and concept. Beyond the Curtain: This has fantastic sound and graphical design, but not much game play. You wander a stage with weird marionettes all over. It's a beautiful experience for the eyes and ears but this is probably the most "walking sim" of the games on here, and I don't like walking sims. Resver: Another walking sim, in the purest sense, although the art style is amazing and really takes you on a journey as you fumble around this strange black and white comic book style world. Huntsvotti: Probably the weirdest game on here, I guess it's trying to be like the movie "Midsommar." It succeeds thematically but fails in the execution because the story is nonsensical and it's too goofy to be scary. I like the overall concept though, and the whole idea of not interrupting the villagers to avoid angering them is inspired all the same. Ludomalica: Some people will love this, I personally just thought it was okay. It's a board game but there's not much "board game" to it, and as it progresses it just gets very repetitive even though it's a little unsettling at first. I would hope a "board game" style horror game would just be more creative than this. The graphics are also kinda dull.
