Gates of Despair is a survival horror experience that embraces uncertainty as its defining feature. Developed and published by CN Entertainment, the game places players in a dark and dangerous world where survival depends on resourcefulness, awareness, and the ability to adapt to constantly changing situations. Rather than relying on a fixed sequence of events, the game uses procedural generation to ensure that each journey feels different, creating a sense of unpredictability that keeps tension high from beginning to end. One of the game's strongest ideas is its commitment to replayability. Every playthrough introduces new layouts, encounters, and circumstances, preventing players from becoming too comfortable with their surroundings. This dynamic structure works particularly well within the horror genre because it removes the safety net of memorization. Even experienced players cannot be entirely certain of what lies ahead, making exploration feel genuinely risky. The constant possibility of encountering something unexpected helps maintain suspense and encourages cautious progression through every environment. The survival mechanics are built around careful resource management and strategic decision-making. Players must search for equipment, gather supplies, and make the most of whatever tools they can find. Weapons offer protection against the horrors that lurk throughout the game, but they are not always the answer. Certain situations demand retreat rather than confrontation, reinforcing the feeling that survival is more important than victory. This balance between combat and evasion creates meaningful tension and encourages players to think before acting. The narrative unfolds through a chapter-based structure that gradually reveals the mysteries surrounding the game's world. Cinematic sequences are used to advance the story, giving players motivation beyond simply staying alive. Each chapter introduces new dangers and story developments, helping maintain momentum while providing context for the increasingly disturbing events that occur. The combination of narrative progression and randomized gameplay is an ambitious approach, allowing the story to remain focused while the gameplay retains a high degree of variability. Atmosphere is clearly a major priority. Dark locations, unsettling audio design, and sudden scares are all used to immerse players in a world filled with dread. The environments are designed to make players feel isolated and vulnerable, while the soundscape constantly reinforces the feeling that danger may be close at hand. The game does not rely exclusively on jump scares, instead using anticipation and psychological tension to keep players uneasy. This approach helps create a more sustained sense of fear rather than depending entirely on brief moments of shock. Enemy encounters further contribute to the game's unsettling nature. Players face a range of hostile creatures and threats, each capable of disrupting any sense of security. The variety of enemies prevents encounters from feeling repetitive and ensures that players must continually adjust their tactics. Combined with the procedural systems, these threats help create a horror experience where no situation feels entirely predictable. As an Early Access title, Gates of Despair demonstrates considerable potential while still leaving room for refinement. Its core concepts are solid, particularly the combination of procedural horror, survival mechanics, and narrative progression. Continued updates and community feedback will likely play an important role in determining how successfully the game evolves over time. The foundation is already in place for a compelling horror experience that can grow significantly with additional content and polish. Overall, Gates of Despair delivers an intriguing blend of survival horror and replayable procedural design. Its emphasis on uncertainty, exploration, and strategic survival creates an experience that consistently aims to keep players uncomfortable and alert. While some aspects may benefit from further development as the game progresses through Early Access, the existing framework successfully captures the tension and vulnerability that define memorable horror games. Fans of atmospheric survival horror who enjoy unpredictable challenges and persistent feelings of dread will find plenty to appreciate in what Gates of Despair has to offer. Rating: 6/10
Gates of Despair is a very good horor game. It has good graphics, good jumpscares, and an overall good atmosphere. The cutscenes are also very cool. I highly recommend the game, especially when it's reduced.
This game has too many issues, so I’ll break it down by chapters: Chapter 1 - Simple "run from A to B" scenario. - The so-called "monster" isn't scary—just annoying. - You can easily outrun it, so there’s no real tension. Chapter 2 - The map design makes no sense—just narrow corridors designed to confuse you and force encounters with jumpscares. - Finding the required items is frustrating rather than challenging. - A random time event at the end forces you to run through every room again searching for a key. Why? Chapter 3 - By far the worst chapter. - If you encounter a “zombie” before finding the weapon, you're screwed. They’re faster than you, and stamina runs out quickly. - Zombies can clip through fences and even walls, making the game feel broken. - The map is a nightmare—finding items is pure luck. General Issues - Jumpscares are obnoxiously loud rather than scary, making it harder to hear actual threats. - Poorly designed maps—Chapter 1 was the only one where I could find anything without frustration. - Unclear objectives—you wander aimlessly, hoping to stumble upon something useful. - Nonsensical story—feels like an afterthought with no logic. - Reused assets—not a problem by itself, but feels like a copy-paste job with no creativity. Final Verdict I wanted to quit multiple times, but my need to 100% games kept me going. In total, it took me 2 hours, but if you remove the artificial padding of aimless running, it's barely 1 hour of actual content. Not worth €3 at all. Think about it 4 or 5 times before buying this. Save your money for something better.
If you want to give despair to your heart, play this game. Expect high difficulty searching puzzles that keeps changing its locations, and insane amount of jump scares out of nowhere. You will never be ready for them, trust me haha. Outstanding horror game atmosphere, chapter one had amazing classic vibes. Chapter 2 with the timer puzzle was something out of this world. Chapter 3 was a great conclusion to the game. It may be an early access game, but overall just an outstanding game with no bugs. A special thanks to the devs for making this masterpiece. Highly recommended for horror fans! P.S: I think the videos and screenshots did not do the game justice, never thought it would be such a great game.
好玩,很好玩,氛围很好!
