After playing the game for 2 hours I lost any kind of interset at continuing. There are so many better boomer shooters, this one is average at best. If I were to describe the whole experience in a single word it would be bland.

It's a fantastic FPS game with some level design and production issues. As far indie shooters go, I would say this one is a gem. Many indie shooters are just straight up "run and gun" games that require little skill as long as you keep moving. "Dread Templar" is more of a strategic fast paced shooter similar to games like Turok or Doom 2016. If you simply run in and shoot everything on the harder difficulties, you will die. This game requires a lot of consideration on weapon usage and you have to switch weapons a lot to survive. The game gives you a katana weapon that you can throw like a spear and this is a lot of fun to use. As you progress, you stumble upon "runes" which are basically weapon upgrades that can dramatically alter the game play. Some give you totally new weapons and abilities and you can create a build more suited to your playstyle. I kind of loved this element because it does reflect the style of a skill tree you'd see in modern roguelike games without bogging the combat down with too much technical detail. The only issue is that a lot of the runes are hidden in "super secrets" that are almost impossible to find. The game treats these as puzzles, but they're ridiculously hidden and it's likely almost everyone looked them up due to the fact that just navigating in this game is difficult. The graphics certainly aren't bad, but the game uses a very repetitive texture pattern and it's extremely easy to get lost. There's no map or compass, so the thought of finding secrets in a game where just orienting yourself to move in the right direction is difficult seems kind of extreme even for the most obsessive players. The locations of the secrets are available online, but doing it that way can make it a tad unsatisfying for players who don't want to spend countless hours exploring maps with no hints or feedback given. Once you kill all the enemies on a stage they stay dead, so you can explore at your leisure, but regardless, I would have liked it more if the rune challenges relied more on "logic" puzzles than "push this random wall texture in the dark." It's even worse on the harder difficulties because you won't even find health unless you access the secret areas. The game doesn't let you save anywhere, but you can use the save points as much as you want. I wish the game limited saves the same way games like Resident Evil do because killing a few enemies and going back and saving diminishes the risk and challenge. Granted, it can be really frustrating to die in this game because on the harder difficulties an enemy might pop around a corner and instantly end your game. Ignoring some of these design flaws, the actual combat is a blast. Most enemies have some method of guarding themselves. Wizards will summon zombies that block you from attacking them. Some spidery looking ice creatures will put up a wall of mist to obscure themselves as they fling icicles at you. Some enemies lunge at you, others put up barriers. It's actually really cool and adds a whole other level of tactics to the game since you can't just run in and blast everything. The key is to pick your targets carefully, use the proper weapons and know when to retreat when you are overwhelmed. It's leagues ahead of your average FPS game and actually better than most mainstream FPS games in this regard. Sadly, the production values aren't great. This game was mostly made by one guy which is super impressive, but he didn't do the music and the soundtrack as a whole just feels disconnected from the game play. After a few hours I shut it off because it's relentless and never stops. In games like Doom 2016, the music dies down when you're out of combat, but here it's constantly cranked up to 11 even when the arena is empty and eventually it just sounds like jarring noise. If you can see past these flaws, the actual game play is fantastic and I highly recommend it. It's ultimately a very creative precision shooter that's overly ambitious and a tad rough around the edges.
exhausting but fun
An honest and solid shooter that draws on some classics of the past while still maintaining an identity of its own. Dread Templar is a revenge journey of a young man whose grandfather was killed by a demonic being. A mysterious figure grants the protagonist supernatural powers, and from there begins an ominous journey of vengeance and bloodlust that will lead to confront his nemesis. The game, inspired by the 90s shooter tradition, is a tribute to what FPS games used to be: speed, lots of weapons, exploration, and varied enemies whose sole purpose is to give the player a challenge. To enrich these characteristics, Dread Templar borrows some mechanics that other modern games already have to diversify its gameplay: there's a character growth system through runes that represent modifiers and abilities for weapons and the player, the inevitable bullet time (time slowdown), and a useful dodge to escape the attacks of more agile enemies. The game is structured into episodes, each with a specific theme and bestiary, though some monsters remain a near-constant presence throughout all the adventure. Each level also has a certain number of secrets to discover, rewarding those who venture out in search of hidden items and runes to modify their playstyle. Progression is fairly linear, but the player is still encouraged to thoroughly check every environment for some good treasure hunting. There are also "side areas" on each map — additional zones with dedicated loot and monsters, optional to the game's overall economy but often rewarding the player with new runes. At the end of each episode there's a battle against a special boss, each with its own special abilities. There's also a horde mode (Guardian Mode) that requires the player to survive waves of increasingly fierce monsters, with the chance to earn credits to upgrade their gear. A nice addition for getting some practice against the enemies encountered during the campaign. There are no kind of multiplayer modes. As mentioned earlier, abilities are tied both to the player themselves (health, stamina, etc.) and to weapons (damage, ammo capacity, special mutators), with two silver slots and one gold slot for each characteristic, with the latter granting the best upgrades. Gold runes are the rarest, since they often unlock the "infernal" versions of certain weapons, like the pistol and the shotgun for example. In addition, depending on your playstyle, you can change your combinations of runes and abilities by interacting with dedicated altars scattered throughout the levels. The gunplay is satisfying and every weapon feels responsive, though some will see more use than others (the revolver above all), but Dread Templar pushes you to experiment with all the firearms thanks to the runes, so you can approach every encounter with the best possible tool. Just like in old games, the player always has all weapons available, mapped to the number keys on the keyboard, even though a weapon wheel (apparently present if you play with a gamepad... but shooters are meant to be played with mouse and keyboard!) would have been welcome too, for quickly selecting the weapon you need depending on the situation. Technically, the game runs on Unity and features a retro style reminiscent of old shooters like Quake, favoring a comic-book-like characterization and style over super-detailed environments. Everything works remarkably well, even if some sections tend to be more simplistic or a bit less detailed. For a production of this kind that's perfectly fine, considering that a single developer essentially created the game, with some external collaborations. The music accompanying our rampages is well-crafted, leaning toward hard and pure metal, with the occasional choir and solemn chant for the more important moments, although a few tracks are perhaps recycled a bit too often across levels. If we really want to find flaws in a production of this kind, besides the already mentioned audio department, there's a bit of underlying repetitiveness, and boredom can come in during long sessions. Still, it's a simple game that's worth trying nonetheless. Aside from a couple of bullet-spongey bosses, it is a very enjoyable game, fairly recommended.
