Drawn 3: Trail of Shadows (Adventure-lite) June, 2013 review Although this is the third in a series, you do not have to have played the previous games in order to enjoy this one. Trail of Shadows is a prequel, which features Franklin telling Iris a story about a little boy with powers much like her own. The options on this one are interesting. We have separate sliders for music and sound effects, plus custom cursor, full screen, and aspect ratio, but there is one more: 'Screen Movement.' For those who are not familiar with the Drawn franchise, the graphics are made in a way that is very reminiscent of pop-up books... as a matter of fact, this will come strongly into play this time around. The screen movement is something that will make the layers of the scene move as you move the cursor around. It adds an amazing depth to the graphics, and you can adjust it to whatever level you wish. It does not tell you what the difference is, but there are two difficulty levels: Casual and Experienced. Upon experimentation, Experienced mode does not have sparkles, and this seems to be the only difference. Sparkles do not indicate hidden object scenes (this is not a HOG!), but rather areas that you can interact with. HINTS do not need to load, and are given as advice under the "Observation" part of the lower left of your screen. The hints are tiered, and if you keep clicking, you'll get a straight answer telling you what you need to do... AFTER giving you actual hints! I love that~ As expected, the graphics are beautiful and the music dramatic. Though the world is very familiar, the story is lighter than in the first two games. There is no need for a map, as we work within small areas of about six scenes before moving on to an all-new area. You will find a book during gameplay, and it is a journal of sorts... except that it is also a series of mini-games in the form of a pop-up book! You know how there are tabs in this kind of book -- well in our journal, we have those tabs, things we have to move and maneuver, all to discover new parts to the story and, sometimes, find items that we need to use in the game. Not sure that I'm explaining that well, but I'm sure you'll catch on quickly. ;) I'd say that the gameplay is about half puzzle and half adventure. The minis themselves are sometimes dependent on reflexes, but are mostly logic-based. Bonus content:

Bonus chapter (integrated into story, about mid-way through, it looks like)
27 collectible pigs
15 in-game achievements
63 concept art
13 wallpapers (3 resolutions to choose from, the highest being 1680x1050)
15 music tracks (can be saved to your computer)
Although this prequel somehow lacks the richness of the first two games, I really enjoyed my time in Trail of Shadows - It was a relaxing way to spend a few hours. Recommended!
In a land far away and yet as close as the nearest book, lived an old man and a young girl. Her name was Iris and she was a princess with an extraordinary power. Her old tutor was Franklin and he too had a secret power, one he explained to her in the weaving of his tales.

Pros

Gorgeous animated backdrops that can change perspective
Variety of puzzles to solve
Story is a return to the strengths of the original title
Cons

Puzzles have only one way to solve them, don't reward innovative thinking
Mouse indicator flickers
No widescreen support (you have to stretch and distort the images The strength of the Drawn series lies in it's celebration of the imagination. Not of storytelling per se but of the visual and creative arts. This final title in the series continues these themes, even though it can be played entirely as a standalone game. This is because the stories framing features Iris and Franklin, but the tale that Franklin tells is an entirely new one. The shift to the new protagonist addresses many of the issues found in the second game, that the players support of Iris meant very little. But here again the player can vicariously live through the character to effectively solve the puzzles and finally triumph. However this does leave many unanswered questions that the series never deliverd, who were you in the previous games, and able to use Iris's power and who is the boy of this tale, though this does lead to the joy and intrigue of players creating their own theories. The tale here unfolds in the same four act structure as the previous games, and shifts between areas denotes each new act. The story moves as fast as the player does, yet never feels too slow, likely because it's not a very long tale, like the previous games it's completable in 3-4 hours. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1783045863 The symbolism here is vivid again, rich and nuanced now that the story has shifted back to the hero's journey and the story is more meaningful because of it. This plays out through the game itself and the areas you traverse are mimicked by the story book pages you add to your journal and complete as additional puzzle segments. Again the allure of the visual style is aided by this since the book is a pop up one, and requires you to fold, unfold and move paper tabs to animate it and bring it to life. It's a homage to reading interactivity in a digital age where such things quickly fade into more abstract mechanics, yet its still beautiful to see it represented. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1783044245 These visual elements of interactivity are further mirrored in the game itself. With areas being multilayered and you can slightly shift the angle to move the image ever so slightly. Sadly I think this effect caused the mouse indicator to flicker and it was jarring to see it switch from the visual aid they had created to my ordinary windows arrow. In addition the same issue of lack of widescreen support led to two black bars down the side of the screen, and when steam notifactions popped would leave an ugly trail at the side of the screen. Stretching the images to fit is an option (as in the other games) but it does unpleasantly distort the images, with faces losing their lean proportions into roundness or houses becoming less high and more sprawling. Other than these small issues the overall tone of the game is preserved. The artwork is exquisite, with painstaking attention to detail. And the images themselves are rife with small animations that bring them to life. Whether its the shadow of crows flying past a window or butterflies dancing in a field, its carefully constructed. In addition the game shifts its tone at times moving from pastoral scenes filled with saccharine colours to sinister caverns with sombre shadows and glowing vines. It's a spectacle of art and one well worth viewing https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1783043354 The gameplay has kept up with the series, and whilst there isn't anything that remarkably stands out to differentiate this title from the others it stays true to what made them so successful. Interactions are fairly clear if you pay attention to the numerous hints the game offers. The difficulty doesn't vary too much, or rather is dependant on your own ability to solve certain types of logic puzzles and there is never too much backtracking since the game closes off the previous areas preventing access to them, keeping you focused on the areas you need to be in. The game is also thankfully devoid of numerous collectors fetch quests that are usually used to pad out time. The UI is easy to understand as well, with the book glowing when it is useable to advance the story. Since it's all located at the bottom it also doesn't interfere with the imagery. Drawn: Trail of Shadows is a fitting conclusion to the tale. It acts much like a prequel to the original two games, and is fairly rare in that it features a male protagonist. As a conclusion to the series though it's fitting it returned to the successes of the first game and avoided the pitfalls of the sequel. For adventure game fans or for pre-pubescent children this game will be an absolute delight. It truly plays to the strengths of the genre, though it would have been nice if the puzzles themselves rewarded creative solutions as well. I am such a huge fan of this franchise that it makes me sick to have to leave another negative review. I first played them on Big Fish years ago. I lost access when my lucky Macbook bit the dust and have missed them ever since. I will say from past experience, this is a beautiful, relaxing game that allows you to appreciate the artistry just as much as the challenge. For this reason, and out of utmost respect for the developers of this franchise, I will not gripe too much, as I bought them as a bundle deal 2 years ago and left them abandoned in my vast library gathering cobwebs. I can't play it though. The main issue seems to be screen resolution. My recommendation is do not buy any game in this franchise beyond the first if you are using a gaming PC purchased over the past few years because the game will crash. There may be some ancient secret buried on how to fix this issue, but I have yet to find it. After restarting 5 times in as many minutes and completing the same puzzle 3 times only to be reset to the beginning, I have thrown in the towel and given it up. All in all, beautiful game. I wish I could play it. :(
Wunderschönes magisches Spiel! Bin echt wieder begeistert! <3 Es ist der 3. Teil einer Triology bzw. die Geschichte spielt früher. Info: Nicht in Deutsch verfügbar. Englischkenntnisse wichtig.
打开谜画之塔的方法(英文是机翻的)The method to open the Tower of Enigmas (The English is machine-translated.) Drawn 1: ①Search for "Big Fish Games" in the "This PC" section of File Explorer. ② Find "GameSettings.ini", open it, and change Fullscreen=0 to Fullscreen=1 in it ③In the settings, adjust the resolution to 1024×768. Drawn 2: Set the resolution to 1280×800 and it will be fine. Drawn 3: ①In the control panel, find the settings option related to language. ② In the Language and Region settings, change "Language for non-Unicode programs" to English ③When you open the game, it will ask if you agree to let it change system settings. Select "Agree", and the game will automatically adjust the resolution. By the way, I was always nostalgic about the online resources I played in primary school. Now that I'm in college, I'm catching up and replaying it. However, I found that I couldn't open the official version of the game at all. It took me a long time to figure out the way to open it (it's like a witch making a potion, every step has to be correct). Although not many people play it now, if there are any new friends who want to get into it, I hope I can help. The Tower of Mysteries trilogy is a great game!
Mittelmäßiges Spiel mit gutem Artdesign.
Unplayable. I had to mess with unicode setting in my system settings to make this game even start on Windows 10. However, it still always crashes after the first level.
Scandaleux.
