I don't understand the hate for this game. It's fun as ♥♥♥♥.

I'm a Dragon Quest Fan, This game is a must for my collection, it's the first time i've heard of it. Some reviews mention the negative bugs, but I really enjoy the gameplay loop. It's fun to try to get as far as possible, learn some tactics, learn what items do and when to save them. Try again. Take some money back and expand the shop. I look forward to the QoL updates that i'm sure will come to this game.!
This has the potential to be a pretty good way to experience this classic through official channels. However, this is more of a middle ground review, Square Enix has many things to fix on this port before I can recommend it. Mainly, they have to fix how slow and sluggish the game feels because of the Log updating after every enemy kill. This ruins the flow, it's a problem that was not present in the original, so it's kind of a confusing issue to have. There are also sound effect timing issues that need to be addressed, such as the miss sound effect happening late, which makes it confusing to understand what's happening in the moment. Finally, the UI could use some extra love, like adding icons next to items in the inventory so it's easier to parse while doing some of the incredible amount of menuing expected from MD games. I love Mystery Dungeon, but in it's current state, selling this for 25 USD is questionable. I'm putting a recommended because it's Mystery dungeon, but this is more of a "Mixed" review
The original Mystery Dungeon is here!!! "Torneko's Mystery Dungeon" is a Super Famicom spin-off of Dragon Quest IV, released exclusively in Japan back in 1993 and developed by Chunsoft. Overseas, we never saw the original (until now!) and only ever got Torneko's sequel on PS1, as well as various entries in the "Shiren the Wanderer" series which Chunsoft would go on to develop as their own follow-up spin-off to this Dragon Quest spin-off. Torneko and Shiren inspired a whole new genre of "Mystery Dungeon" roguelike titles, which have crossed over into Pokémon, Final Fantasy / Chocobo, Etrian Odyssey, and so many others. I genuinely can't say enough good things about Mystery Dungeon games and have put countless hours across them all - but the Torneko-specific line have always been my personal favorites. The Dragon Quest aesthetic is unbeatable, and he's an adorably flawless choice for a lead character. This is basically a very minor remaster / almost straight port of the 30+ year-old original Torneko game, which again is the very first in the greater Mystery Dungeon series. It seems intent on preserving the original game and experience, so you're not going to find a ton of new features, stunning graphics, or more modern and complex mechanics of later Mystery Dungeon types here (there is still quite a bit added that I’ll go into more detail on below). Torneko works as both a perfect entry point for newcomers, and as a highly enjoyable ride for old fans. Being the first of them all it does a solid job of explaining the various systems at work, it won't overwhelm you, and still provides a seriously great challenge. This is not a game you necessarily blare through though, every run is different and you do lose your items + levels upon dying each time (certain things you unlock later will help here a tad). It expects you to pay attention and learn from each loop, and there's no avoiding that some runs will be flat-out unlucky and cruel. The fun is in the wandering and seeing how far you can push things, and like the rest of the series it offers one of the best "just one more run..." roguelike feelings out there. The lows can absolutely feel low and frustrating, but the highs are...so dang high. It's all by design.

As far as this particular remaster goes:
ADDITIONS / CHANGES

The original game’s DQ4 pixel’y intro cutscene has been remade into a very cute and animated little storybook sequence. Love this.
The big one - there’s a new "Misc." option in the pause menu with some really great stuff: (1) "Play Records" gives you detailed stats on your time spent, totals, and various runs, includes a full Monster Directory / bestiary, an Item Directory, and tracks the Castle & Shop advice from your conversations with NPCs. (2) "Settings" not only includes modern options for Display, Sound, Controls, and general Game Settings (font type, total lines shown in the play log, grid view, equipment changes shown or not, etc), but also an “Adjust Game Balance” option. Here you can control the Monster Appearance Rate, toggle Monster Dens, and even includes modifiers for Gold, EXP, and Item / Bread / Trap appearance. Using these disables any run from being counted towards Play Records, Achievements, or High Scores - but it’s a solid way to give people a variety of options to change things up. For new players that are really struggling I can see this being super useful, and for veterans wanting to make it more difficult you can absolutely do so. (3) "Quit" is the same as it was in the original game, you suspend your adventure / quick save and go back to the main menu. (4) "Give Up" is really nice if you’re having a real bad run and just want to flee and quickly start over.
Selecting "Info" while hovered over an item in your menu displays so much more detailed information than the original game. You get actual stat values on weapons / armor!
While you can still toggle the Map’s persistent view on/off in the main menu, you can now also adjust where on the screen it’s positioned + have 2 options to control its transparency.
There is a "Replay" option in the main menu to view your previous runs.
There is a free DLC specific to the Steam version to connect your game to streaming services for viewer-based interaction and influence over your runs. I have not tried this, but it sounds hilarious.
In-game graphics have a minor remaster feel compared to the original, but absolutely retain that older SNES sprite-based vibe w/ some new 3D environmental touches. Preferences here are going to be very subjective. I personally enjoy how it looks, I thought the original looked great as well, but watch the trailer to gauge things if it’s very important to you.
Soundtrack has been slightly rearranged. More orchestral vs the original’s very old-school MIDI instrumentation soundscape.
From what I can tell, your general stats, item and trap rates, monster appearance, etc. have not been changed. Everything feels very true to the original game. With the ability to use modifiers and adjust things in settings, I wouldn’t be surprised if they left the base gameplay as it was originally balanced.
COMPLAINTS / ISSUES
I've seen complaints on the graphics and look of the game, the text and window timing, input delay, as well as various small bugs. In my short time playing so far, while I absolutely agree that certain aspects need some tightening-up I think a lot of the criticism I've come across is way too harsh.

Leveling-up and missing attacks do not actually have a full 10~15 second post-delay. I've seen this mentioned a LOT, and have found it extremely over-exaggerated in my experience while on Steam Deck + 2 decently high-end desktops. Having said that, there is indeed a slight delay with text appearance and how windows pop in and out, and I can understand this might be frustrating for some. It hasn't broken my own flow or bothered me in any way.
Controls and walking diagonally feel fine on an Xbox-based / PC controller. I haven't tested mouse & keyboard. Listing here as I have seen complaints on this end, but I’m not quite sure I understand what the issues are.
On Steam Deck when coming back from sleep, I’ve had the game occasionally freeze for up to 10 seconds before it starts moving. No hard freezes that require a restart or crashing, though (/yet). Also, while the game shows as "Steam Deck Verified" I've had to run it in Proton Experimental.
Every issue I've seen feels like it will be an easy patch or two away from the developers solidifying (hopefully). There's nothing I’ve found even close to game-breaking, and no reason to discourage people that are interested in supporting this niche title. (will edit this section as I come across things / the game is updated or patched)

To wrap this up - Torneko's Mystery Dungeon is an incredible game. If you're new to Mystery Dungeon types and aren't averse to playing "old games", I'd highly recommend starting here. Take your time and go slow, listen to the NPCs, learn from your deaths / mistakes and adapt, and have fun finding your own groove while playing. If you've already tried and enjoyed other Mystery Dungeon types, or maybe you're just a big Dragon Quest fan...I'd recommend it even more. These games are truly special and there's so much charm and heart throughout. With the new QoL features and shiny localization this is the best way to experience and support something unique that’s been locked away in Japan for over 30 years. I'll be spreading the word and crossing my fingers it sells well so we eventually see the rest of the series localized and re-released. The games all deserve it. Having this shadow-dropped in a Nintendo Direct was a dream come true moment for me, and I hope everyone else has a wonderful time playing. I plan to be here running dungeons for a long, long time!
