Good old days. Man, I made a Steam account just to get this game and Terraria back in 2015. This marks the 10-year anniversary of me being on this platform. I can’t believe time has flown by so fast. i'm going to cry right now.
This is quite the enthralling, spellbinding little game that caught me by surprise, as at first glance it seems to be a cheap, cutesy looking and simple Tower Defence. And while a Tower Defence it is, trivialising it to that genre obfuscates so much more behind it - the breeding and tactical elements. If you want it to, this game goes pretty deep... Your various mythical beasties have wants and needs, from dislike for certain other unholy creations, to seeking certain items in their homes or outcomes over time - all of which affect their stats and capabilities. The weakest starter unit can be made tenfold stronger through satisfaction and rewards. And then you can breed your monsters and doing this over time significantly increases those essential capabilities, through the roof if you are patient enough to. And as you progress you can, of course, level up the category of each genre, which then leads to a tough choice of levelling up the powers of a starter monster, or trading them up for the next level. It's not easy (but is possible) to concentrate on both tactics. All this leads to a huge variation of different build strategies, housing location for different units and working out wicked combos - and you'll need it because the enemies get very hard if you're caught unawares! To illustrate the various approaches you could take, the nicely appointed achievements lead you to attempt different challenges and explore new outcomes. All of this was far, far more than I expected for such a cheap price - this is great value for money for a clever, deep strategy game.
Pretty decent tower defense game but very simple and a little grindy. You may not actually finish it but if you got in a bundle you may as well enjoy it!
Unholy Heights is a surprisingly charming mashup of apartment management sim and tower defense that had me far more emotionally invested than I expected — I actually felt guilty evicting a monster orphan who couldn't make rent after I let her parents die in a bad ambush. The monster tenants have real personality: they get jobs, fall in love, have babies, and develop little routines that make you genuinely care about them, which makes it all the more satisfying (and heartbreaking) when they go out to fight off waves of adventurers. The combat is simple but engaging enough, and the cute pixel art paired with the breezy Animal Crossing-style soundtrack gives the whole thing a delightful vibe that belies how oddly deep the management layer gets. That said, it can get repetitive over a long session, and losing key fighters because they happened to be on their paper route when a quest started is genuinely frustrating. For the asking price though, it's absolutely worth picking up — just don't get too attached to your tenants.
Pros + Collect rent from monsters + Skeletons pay on time + Succubi are surprisingly reliable tenants + Tower defense but with landlords Cons - Humans keep attacking the building - Tenants complain about rent - Even Hell has property management problems Verdict Being the Devil was supposed to be easy. Now I'm chasing chicks for unpaid rent.
(game not complete and dropped at 1.5 hours of gameplay at review time, part of my review all my games effort) (short version) Grindy as hell, I love the concept but you will be stuck in purgatory with this game, there are better ones out there that are like this. $4 is a good price for what you get. I'm not recommending because I wouldn't want to put friends though this grind. Good music but very basic gameplay. (no long version needed)
