The tutorials assume you are familiar with the product. (They are 18 steps on making rooms and layering but NO real ONE ROOM step) They do not do a good job on what each tool does, again join discord to blah blah blah. F#ck Discord…. I don’t WANT to join twelve channels or read through 96,000 posts. I have wasted way way more money in my life, but this at least had potential. I’ll keep screwing with it because well I paid for it, but as a GM who had made 1,000’s of hand made map, I guess I’ll just need to make a few 1,000’s more. You NEED Simple 2 or 3 step tutorials….. This is how you make a TREE This is how you make a CLIFF. This is how you make a CAVE. This is how you START anything…… Not 12 steps to make a great map…… ONE STEP at a time. A.K.A a tutorial.
The GOOD:
This is an extremely powerful mapmaker. You can make very cool maps with it. That said, you do need to watch the tutorial videos and possibly visit the discord for some of the more advanced functions, which are not remotely obvious how to use. The simple view mode is also appreciated as, when you populate a map with hundreds or thousands of objects, it certainly speeds up performance. This is probably the best feature of the software.
The BAD:
The UI. The only reason I haven't given this a thumbs up is because of the UI. Altogether, the UI feels like it's getting in the way of creating maps more than it's helping to facilitate map making. Here are three things about the UI that struck me immediately when I started playing around (after watching the tutorial videos): 1) The Camera Controls are locked behind holding space or left-alt, which is not a standard design choice in similar software, and which initially leads to a lot of frustration. I should be able to use mouse-3 (mousewheel button, click and hold) to rotate, mousewheel to zoom, and right mouse (click and hold) to pan/drag. I should not need to press a button to access camera controls. At the very least, there should be a control setting that lets you select how the camera controls perform (eg, press to access vs always available). 2) There should be a check box to force update the map when you click the change mode button so you don't have to click two buttons to update the rendered map. Also, the change mode button just says "change mode," which is not descriptive or useful. A button as important like that should say something like "Toggle Beauty Mode" or "Toggle Render Mode" or something. 3) The way themes are selected is wildly bizarre. You have a right-hand menu that you press a check box on to add a theme. That theme is "empty," meaning there is no texture associated with it. So you must then open a side menu (which can, mercifully, be done by double clicking on the theme). There, you are prompted to select an asset to fill the theme with. This is simply too many mouseclicks to perform a basic function. You should be able to open the texture menu, select a texture, and have a theme automatically added.
At this point, it's a bug factory - it doesn't render result you'll expect. You won't get desired result quickly. And I don't even mention BAD UI.
This has some potential, but it still feels clunky unintuitive and basically unfinished. It also does not look like there is much development going on. Bur i think this can get pretty good if development continues and maybe the UI is getting a bit more intuitive.
I’ve tried several different map-making programs to create detailed battle maps, but I always end up struggling with shadows & terrain details OR I end up spending way too much time on details my players don’t even notice. Finding DMM was a blessing from Torm himself. I can finally make gorgeous maps quickly! I highly recommend watching the tutorial videos on the DMM website. They’re short, clear, and explain everything you need to get started. I was able to quickly setup my first few maps for my session in just about an hour or two. My only complaint? I just want more stuff! I really look forward to seeing what else you release. Thank you so much!
Finger weg..
I never leave reviews on things but I had to for this one. I have no experience with anything like this btw, this is all a first for me. So, I went in pretty skeptical, but was willing to take a $40 dive. When I first booted it up there was so much that I felt like I was have 10 different conversations with people who don't speak anything I do. I watched one video, got my sea legs, and very roughly learned as I went. I've only done 3 interiors so far, no exteriors. I'll give a little pro and con list for quick reading. Cons: A lot of buttons, don't always know what they do. Not enough items. Very easy to turn 20 plates of food into 20 tables. Have to load up previous project every time. Zoom controls are a little weird. Change tabs with every different item before interaction. $40. Some times still look very grid like, like the tiles. Only square, no curves or slants. Once you place an item can't delete it, only shrink it to an invisible size. Pros: Undo button, lifesaver, seemingly no limit on how far. Variety of Items. Light fixtures. Shadows. No grid on Rend, great if you use Roll20. Clearly one does outweigh the other, but this is one of those events where I still say worth it. It is still early access, I'm sure it will have a vast improvement over time. Its certainly not perfect, but its still pretty good!
------------------------------------------------------------- Dragon Map Maker is an absolutely fantastic tool for anyone who loves worldbuilding, storytelling, or tabletop RPGs. The software is incredibly intuitive, making it easy to jump right in and start creating detailed, beautiful maps without feeling overwhelmed. What I especially love is the balance it strikes between user-friendliness and creative depth—you can make quick sketches for a session in minutes, or spend hours fine-tuning every mountain, forest, and coastline until it feels perfect. The variety of features and assets is impressive, and everything feels polished and thoughtfully designed. It’s clear that the creators put a lot of passion into making this more than just a map editor—it’s a tool that inspires creativity and sparks ideas for adventures, campaigns, or even entire worlds. Whether you’re a seasoned dungeon master, a writer, or just someone who enjoys imagining new places, Dragon Map Maker is a joy to use. It has quickly become one of my favorite creative tools, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to bring their worlds to life.
It is easy to use, produces nice looking maps and imports easily into Foundry VTT and is still under active development (albeit slow as I beleive it is a solo effort). I'm very happy!
