1% learning, 99% tedious forced pixel tracing over already marked areas over and over and over again with no option to skip steps. Like I get it, I don't have to click over hundreds of pixels that you have already marked for me, this is just color-by-number but way worse. Imagine Khan Academy, but it gives you all the answers but you still have to manually type the answers it gives you, for hours. Has some extra features like a music library, which makes me wish that they had put the effort in to improving the teaching aspect, and the way they make the user digest the information. I can listen to my own music while practicing if I want to. I'm sorry to say that, short and free videos on youtube is a way superior medium to learn and practice pixel art in comparison.
I have nothing bad to say about this game. I am an experienced artist but wanted to dip my toes into pixel art. I've always loved the aesthetic but didn't know where to begin. After finding someone recommending this game, I downloaded the demo, just to see what it was all about. I was absolutely blown away by what I saw and bought the full copy immediately. Every single day this week I have spent about 2 hours working through the lessons. I have taken college level art classes and university level online classes and I feel like I have never seen an educational tool be so well made. When I first started playing it my first comparison was the Pokemon Art Academy game that was released for the DS. This game works at a similar pace to teach you not only the fundamentals of pixel art but the basics for any and all art, like shape language and simplifying designs. Using real world examples of pixel art from different games, different eras, and different genres went a long way to help show real work examples of the lessons being taught. My literal only complaint about this game is that the pinball game section was a bit unclear about what each part did. I was not able to make a version where the ball reset after falling out of bounds, I would just have to restart the game itself. I don't typically play early access games, I like to just wait for them to come out in full, but I was so blinded by how well made this was that I completely forgot it wasn't a finished product. Even though I was sad when I got to the end of the content, I cannot wait to see what comes next. Please, take all the time you need to finish the game with as much care and thought as whats currently out. I am so excited for the next modules. TLDR: This game is a phenomenal teaching tool that will only get better with time, I can't wait to see where it goes. Full hearted recommendation!!!
This is a solid edutainment game for anyone interested in pixel art, or art in general. I feel like I've learned more about art theory in ten hours playing this game than I did in the 80 hours of color theory and photo manipulation I took in college. Pros: >Easy to follow and fun tutorials >Great interface design >Good music Cons: >It's not finished yet, it's still early access
It's a glorified tracing simulator
DO NOT BUY: i have not learned anything in the past hour, the only thing if been doing is painstakingly traced like a THOUSAND lines. this is not learning you anything, its torture. to be clear, i have only player the first hour, this may change later in the game but honestly I'm sick of tracing lines...
It taught me about curves, lines, and shapes. It felt like the concepts it taught were good, but it never gets you out of "tutorial hell" (just blindly copying what it's telling you to draw). There were a couple times when it did make me draw stuff on my own, and that was the best feeling ever. Any review before 2025 doesn't really do this course justice because there is a lot more content now than there used to be. Overall, it's a really good course, but it's not enough (yet) to just jump directly into doing pixel art yourself once you complete the course. It has so much potential though, so by the time you're reading this, it's probably better than what it was for me.
A nice indy initiative. It kept my daughter occupied for hours. I hope the authors will be able to further develop their ideas and eventually finish the game.
I will use this new found skill to make Hentai. Thank you.
Ganz ehrlich?
Beautifully designed education game, at times I have to remind myself I'm here to learn and not just blindly treat it like a fill in the dots type easy art software. Actually read what its teaching you lol. Very helpful for me, I'm a noob artist in general and this is a way to get me excited to improve my skills. Great game!
