Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/H_f4WrPEssg I did not enjoy this game at all. My playtime does NOT include the time I spent playing the demo. I played the demo for about an hour. Luckily, my progress was saved so I could seamlessly continue my progress. I do highly recommend checking out the demo if you are not convinced by this initial impressions review. The reason I only spent about 2 hours total with the game is quite simple: I was not having fun. I found the core gameplay loop was too basic. The combat was too simple. I was just spamming my basic attack and walking backwards. Enemy AI was pretty dumb, they just walk in a line straight towards you most of the time, unless they're doing a dodge and then forget you exist and wander off. The animations are rough. It's difficult to tell most of the time whether you hit an enemy or whether they hit you. The UI is ugly, it's hard to see your health or mana. Almost all the interactions are of the point and click variety. The collection of resources is basically just pushing a button while you're character does a simple animation on a cooldown. You can craft some items with these resources, but it simply isn't fun. The quests are too simple as well. You go to the town hub and go to the message board. It will say kill x amount of a, b, and c. Rinse and repeat. After you kill a, b, and c, there will be a prompt that says finish quest. Then you're on to the next quest that says now kill x amount of a, d, e. I did not play online coop, just single player, so it may be a lot more fun with friends. However, as a solo experience, this is a pretty dull game that I can't recommend. As far as the positives though, there is a nice variety of weapons and there's some nice upgrades & new skills to unlock. You have different classes to choose from: warrior, mage, or ranger. Online multiplayer coop is available as well. The different biomes look nice and it is procedurally generated. However, it does look like the assets were taken from the Humble Bundle low-polygon collection (but it still looks nice & the dev obviously put a lot of effort into putting it together nicely). Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. However, I did notice some pop-in issues. I did not experience any serious issues or bugs (although enemies would walk in place or get stuck in the terrain or clip through objects). You do have full locomotion available with snap turning. There's also a left-handed option. I know the game is in Early Access. So it has time to vastly improve. That may happen. However, I can only review as is currently and, as is currently, it's pretty bad. Rate 3/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. I wanted to like it so much. I love the simple art style. I love the variety of items in game and classes to play. The quest system is right up my alley. The trailer hooked me and I thought "what the heck its a new release from a small developer I will give it a try". Here are my thoughts after a half hour of play and sending a refund request: This game very clearly never intended to be a VR title. The HUD is very unintuitive. You cant keep track of your health, stamina, cool downs, etc. while in combat because the HUD is built for a 2D medium and is so close to your face you cant see it and your enemy at the same time (as you would be able to on a monitor). The inventory and looting screens are 2D meaning you are put in a black void and taken out of the game every time you interact with either which is extremely jarring. Don't let the trailer fool you. None of the combat is physics based in any way. Your attacks have a cool down meaning your physical swings will not be doing anything half the time. The bow and its draw are a set animation making using a ranger extremely boring. I may as well just be aiming with a mouse and clicking. As well as the speed and drop of the arrow being predetermined by said animations. On top of all this, the flat screen counterpart looks to have had very little progress made since its 2020 release into early access. I could go on and on but it would be a waste of both our time. In conclusion, this game feels like it would be pretty fun... when played in its intended medium. This is a flat screen game. This is in no way shape or form a game that should have been released as a VR title. The entire game needs to be reworked with physical combat/3D compatibility in mind. All of the 2D/flat screen assets need to be replaced. The HUD needs to be completely reworked. These problems are not something that can be hidden behind its "early access" release state. It is a cash grab of a flat screen port and should be unlisted from steam until these fundamental problems are addressed. If you want to play this game or support the development purchase the non VR version of the game.
Pretty fun game, love the procedural dungeons, avoiding traps and fighting bosses. Needs some work but it has a lot of potential, looking forward to seeing the game progress.
Dragon Extinction VR is an Early Access Paid VR game where you do a fantasy action RPG. It worked on my HTC Vive and Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Online Co-op content that single players can also solo. The graphics are simple polygon, but you do have a whole body. I thought i would get motion sick from the movement, but have not had problem with that. VR movement is smooth moves and snap turn, with a jump and dodge. Some maps are huge, and some maps are random generated. Has a large bank that you can store stuff in and pass stuff to other characters. You can make a melee Warrior Tank, Archer Ranger, or Mage with ranged magic damage. CONS: Nobody buying or using this game. Maybe buy this VR game, if you are looking for fantasy action RPG in VR. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. ViVE VR curator group
Its a game where you can do anything! I mean that negatively. You can walk up mountains like they were flat ground, you can cast a spell that 2 shots any creature 50 times without running out of mana, the starting stick kills creatures very quickly, there's no actual story or "questing system" others allude to, appears to be just 'travel to location and hit things". Didn't play for long but it was far too easy to be any fun and didnt seem like it would improve if I let it stay on my credit card. If anything get the non-vr version as you cannot mouse over anything in vr and just have to guess whats best by what looks coolest.
Bueno.
enjoying the procedural dungeons and thew questing system, some parts need some work , but speaking with developers they are in the works of making additions for the game.
Unoptimized and very few options for configuration. Don't waste your time on this one, do another playthrough of Karnage Chronicles! I was using the Valve Index on a high end PC using a 3080 TI and the performance was laughable. Maybe once it gets updated more it might be worth playing.
