Little dragon soars Wonder hides in simple skies Joy lights every wing
I don't exactly know what I was expecting when I got this game, but just from the intro alone I knew I was in for a fun and hilarious time. This is a game that is both challenging but still fun and had me cackling but also tearing up slightly during parts of the story. The boss fights did feel a bit all over the place difficulty wise, but in the end I had a good time. The game reminded me of old school side scrollers that were difficult but still had you coming back over and over. I may have a slight bias since I LOVE dragons, but I think this game is a truly underrated gem!

Imagine getting shown this at 3-4 yo, buy it for a kid!
Game oozes with charm. It might be rough around some edges, but it's perfect just the way it is.

DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon is a whimsical indie action-platformer that wears its charm openly and never tries to be anything other than a playful, heartfelt fantasy about living life as a dragon. Developed by Games With Dragons In and published by IPBuilders, the game embraces a deliberately light tone, pairing nostalgic 2D gameplay with a hand-drawn art style that feels like a storybook brought to life. From the opening moments, it makes clear that this is not an epic tale of world-saving heroics, but a personal adventure driven by simple motivations, humor, and an affection for classic platformers. You take control of Dragon, a colorful and expressive protagonist whose journey begins with the kidnapping of his girlfriend by a human king who sees dragons as a nuisance rather than legends. This setup cleverly flips traditional fantasy tropes, casting the dragon not as a villain or final boss, but as the emotional center of the story. The narrative unfolds through short scenes, environmental details, and amusing character interactions rather than lengthy exposition, keeping the focus on moment-to-moment play while still giving the adventure a clear sense of purpose and heart. The humor ranges from lighthearted visual gags to absurd encounters with modernized medieval enemies, giving the game a quirky personality that helps it stand out. Gameplay blends classic side-scrolling platforming with light RPG elements. Dragon can jump, hover briefly in the air, swipe with his claws, and unleash different elemental breath attacks such as fire, ice, and lightning. These breath weapons are more than cosmetic, as certain enemies and bosses are more vulnerable to specific elements, encouraging players to switch tactics rather than rely on a single approach. As you progress, enemies drop gold that can be spent on permanent stat upgrades, adding a sense of progression and customization that rewards exploration and persistence. While the mechanics are simple, they are easy to grasp and make the game approachable for players of varying skill levels. Level design emphasizes variety and exploration rather than sheer difficulty. Each area introduces new visual themes, enemies, and environmental hazards, helping the game avoid monotony despite its relatively straightforward structure. Hidden treasures, optional paths, and secret rooms reward players who take the time to explore beyond the main route, giving the world a sense of depth without fully committing to a Metroidvania structure. Boss fights act as highlights, often requiring attention to attack patterns and smart use of elemental breath rather than pure reflexes, providing spikes of challenge that punctuate the otherwise relaxed pacing. Visually, the game is one of its strongest elements. The hand-drawn art style is colorful, expressive, and intentionally imperfect, lending the game a warm, almost childlike aesthetic that complements its tone. Characters and environments feel lively despite their simplicity, and the animations give Dragon a surprising amount of personality. The soundtrack reinforces this mood with upbeat and melodic tracks that shift appropriately between exploration, combat, and boss encounters, helping maintain a sense of momentum and fun throughout the journey. That said, DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon is not without limitations. The core gameplay loop can become repetitive over longer sessions, and some players may find the controls slightly restrictive, particularly when it comes to aerial combat and movement precision. Difficulty balance can feel uneven, with certain bosses posing a noticeable challenge while regular stages remain relatively forgiving. These issues don’t fundamentally break the experience, but they do highlight the game’s indie roots and modest scope. Overall, DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon succeeds by leaning fully into its personality rather than trying to compete with larger or more complex titles. It is a game built on charm, humor, and a genuine love for classic platforming, offering a cozy and entertaining adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Players looking for deep mechanics or cutting-edge polish may find it simplistic, but those who appreciate character-driven indie games with heart, nostalgia, and a playful sense of identity will likely find it a memorable and endearing experience. Rating: 7/10
This game is indeed... about a dragon.
I like the artstyle and the character, but unfortunately the game keeps crashing for me on the 4th boss. I've tried lots of stuff to try to get it to not crash but none of them work (admin mode, verifying files, lower resolution, turn off music/sounds, etc.) The game spikes in memory use before the crash. It happened on Toxic 3 too but that one resolved itself after the second load. If the game didn't have this severe crashing issue I would likely rate positive if the crashing is fixed, even if the final boss is a bit like people say. Also if you fix that I hear one or two of the achievements is/are bugged but I can't verify that myself.
