This game is cool cat bad
I stumbled upon this game on the r/vintagecgi subreddit and immediately I took a liking to the visual style. Old prerendered CG is my thing, plus the game looked like a fun arcadey time, so eventually I forked over the dough to get it. I had actually played Spooky Castle: The Adventures of Bouapha before buying this one and had a lot of fun! Since Dr. Lunatic plays identically, why wouldn’t it be fun as well…? Dr. Lunatic Supreme with Cheese is a top-down action adventure/collectathon mixed with a dose of run ‘n gun, it reminds me of Legend of Valkyrie in a way. I’m a big fan of Valkyrie, so this style of play feels very fun. Tossing hammers at foes feels satisfying, along with using the other crazy weapons that you can find either scattered around or dropped by enemies. My favorite has to be the AK-8087, unloading 99 energy slugs into a bad guy is a blast! The game also has a good sense of humor, with funny text pop-ups sometimes showing up that made me chuckle, and you’ve got a very diverse and zany rogues gallery to face off against, such as seals toting machine guns, robot cactuses on wheels, and elemental serpents that make a “wa” noise that never ceases to amuse me. Heck, most of the SFX in this game is hilarious, all done by Mike Hommel, the game’s main developer. That said, as much as I dig the visual style and nonsensicality of this game, it doesn’t excuse how frustrating this game gets. Now I know I can’t expect AAA polish in an indie game, especially this one which was made two decades ago, but some of these gameplay elements really got on my nerves. Among them are the lack of checkpoints, the stupid ice (and by extension the ice that you can only travel on a few times before it breaks), the finicky You-Go karts, and just the fact that you so often get surrounded by enemies and you can barely defend yourself because you’re so underpowered. Huge shout out to the stages where you are mobbed by a horde of baddies but barely have any room to move, lest you fall into the water for the 40th time. And you know what sucks? Half the time this game is actually pretty fun, but then there comes a level that totally ruins my good mood. That’s the big rub - the gameplay style is fun but many level designs and many of the gimmicks are not fun. It’s a constant tug-of-war between the two sides. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so mad at a game in years, but Dr. Lunatic has succeeded in making me want to slam my fist into my computer every five minutes. I know I’ll come off as a madman to anyone reading this, but when you buy a game that everyone seems to love yet fails to make you love it, it can make you feel deceived. I certainly felt deceived.
This game has been a constant companion throughout countless days and nights of my childhood, particularly during the times I played with my father. It genuinely brought me immense joy. I was thrilled to discover that it has now been released on Steam, prompting me to purchase it immediately. In many ways, this game has become an integral part of my childhood and one of my most treasured memories.
I have a very soft spot in my heart for this game. It honestly got me through some tough years of my life. I had a lot of fun with it and it's nice to see it still around in modern days!
It's pretty cool. I grew up playing Spooky Castle and that's what I love to play every year!
If I were to count the number of hours I’ve spent on this game, I’d easily surpass 1,000 hours. I started playing this game when I was really young. At first, I had the Dr. Lunatic demo. It was one of my favorite games. It’s immortal to me. If I were to point out any flaws, it would be the addition of the “Supreme With Cheese” coins and candles, as well as a lot of low-quality extra maps. Honestly, back then, that kind of spoiled the game’s atmosphere for me a little. But despite these flaws, I still consider this game fantastic. Recently, I did a run on the hardest difficulty level, and it reminded me of my childhood, struggling through the demo in a similar way. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
Hammer UP!
I remember playing Hamumu's games between my late teens and early 20s, and now I'm in my mid-30s – time sure flies! I even bought a copy of Dr. Lunatic Supreme with Cheese before the games were made free. This game has literally hundreds of levels, quite a few things to unlock, and an excellent level editor. I highly recommend it, of course. If you can't or don't want to pay right now, the game is available for free on Itch. Both versions of the game are identical, except the paid Steam version has Steam specific features, such as achievements, level sharing via Steam Workshop, and Steam Cloud.
Don't look at the play time. I had the game in my early 2004 or something on some shareware disk and spent many months playing it! Amazing Puzzle (platformer? - no jumps, but there are tons of platforms). Tons, like TONS of content in the base game, when done - just download the workshop build of many many more worlds! The game is very simple in the core, but has tons of interesting mechanics that can apply to very unique puzzle levels. You can find the game free, but I just had to have it in my collection :) 10/10 + achievements!
Cheesy late 90s indie game that still scratches same itch just as well as it did 25 years ago when I got it from a cereal box. Same stupid sound effects. Same stupid monsters. I would have paid $100 to have this game again, and luckily don't have to!
