I first played this game more than 13 years ago. Back then, Assassin’s Creed was on a huge wave of popularity and it was one of my beloved series, so every game about an assassin seemed interesting to me. Here, however, I was about to try a first-person experience — something much more intimate and personal. At that time, I quickly discovered that I was extremely bad at stealth games in general. Years later, I came back to Dishonored after a big sale, equipped with all available DLCs, and entered this incredible world once again. Pros: ✅ The world and the dense, dark atmosphere are absolutely fantastic. Dark magic, high politics and modern technology are mixed together here without any feeling that these elements do not belong together. ✅ The story is simple, but engaging. I noticed that nowadays I often prefer a plot that is not too complicated, but works well, rather than something very ambitious and pompous that ends up being completely ruined by the creators. ✅ The lore of this world is definitely my favorite part of the game. I would really like to see more different productions set in this universe. ✅ I like almost all of the characters, although Corvo himself is probably the one I like the least, because silent protagonists simply do not work very well for me. Daud from the story DLC is much better in my opinion, mostly because he has a fantastic voice and way of speaking. ✅ The gameplay is difficult, but the things an experienced assassin can do with the powers granted by the Outsider’s Mark are simply insane. ✅ And speaking about powers — dear Lord, I honestly cannot imagine a better set of abilities for this type of game. They work together perfectly and strongly reward creativity. ✅ I think the game has a very good balance when it comes to tools and ammunition. I never felt that I had too much or too little of it. ✅ Normally, I would say that the character progression system and ability upgrades are not very original, but here they simply work. They encourage the player to explore locations and search for hidden collectibles that make the protagonist clearly stronger. ✅ The game runs well and smoothly, both on my PC and on Steam Deck, as I tried both versions. In the end, however, I preferred playing with mouse and keyboard. It also has smartly placed save points, so when it froze once on my Steam Deck, after a quick restart I returned almost exactly to the same place. ✅ The original voice acting and sound design are exactly what they should be. They are an important part of the game’s atmosphere. ✅ I love the “side missions”, if they can be called that, and the fantastically hidden secrets. Masterpiece. ✅ A big part of the missions gives the player several different ways to complete the objective. This helps replayability a lot, especially because the powers themselves also become more enjoyable when you learn how to use them properly. Cons: ❌ I have a problem with some missions, especially in The Knife of Dunwall DLC. As I wrote earlier, in some missions you can clearly see that the developers put a lot of work into giving the player alternative paths and different ways to complete the task. Unfortunately, this is not true for every mission. Sometimes I felt too strongly led by the hand. ❌ I also have to mention most of the locations as a downside. There are exceptions, but in many cases they feel too empty and somehow too linear. I often walked through almost cardboard-like streets where I could not really do anything or climb onto anything. Many times it seemed to me that I should easily be able to jump onto some roof or ledge, but in those places the game simply said “no”. This often made the world feel more closed than it should. ❌ The enemies are complete idiots and often behave in strange or unclear ways. You can feel that the game is old in this aspect. I also have the impression that even though there are a few different enemy types, there are still not that many of them, and they are not different enough from each other. ❌ The age of the game is also visible in the graphics and the general look of the locations. Do not get me wrong — the art direction is absolutely brilliant and it works perfectly with the rest of the game’s atmosphere. Still, visually it is not especially impressive anymore, especially with what I consider to be a scandalously small number of character models. ❌ The static story cutscenes look weak. ❌ However, the biggest downside of the game for me is the way the endings work. The only real choice we make is whether to kill a target permanently or remove them without killing them, but this does not really affect the story itself. The game basically requires you to avoid killing in general if you want the good ending. During missions, I was not a pacifist, but I discovered ALL alternative ways of dealing with the main targets. In the end, it did not matter for the ending. I would prefer more shades of grey and a better reputation system, like the ones newer games can successfully use nowadays. Dishonored is a very unique game. It represents the stealth genre very well. It is creative, atmospheric and solidly made, even if it clearly has a few years behind it now. The potential of this world fits my taste incredibly well, and I will definitely play the next parts. I recommend it to everyone who will not get discouraged by having to reload the game a few times before becoming a true blade of the Outsider.

Best stealth game
