ゲームとしては面白い。ではなぜお勧めできないかというと全部入りのアップデート、もしくはDLCを一向に行わないところ。そこさえ改善してくれれば…
Sometimes the strongest gaming move is graceful surrender. I bought this game in March last year. Played it for 10 glorious minutes. Closed it. Did not look at it again until this week, when, in a fit of misplaced optimism, I dedicated 2 entire hours of my finite mortal life to completing Chapter 1. That's the review. That's the whole arc. Look, I'm not here to call this game garbage. Plenty of people clearly adore it, and that's beautiful for them. They probably also enjoy spreadsheets, color-coded materials, and reading appliance manuals for fun. No shade, genuinely. This game is built for people whose idea of "winding down after work" involves a notepad, a flowchart, and an unhealthy relationship with the word optimal. I am not that person. This game is grindy. This game is difficult. This game is, fundamentally, a sandbox, which is gamer-speak for "we built a very cool toolbox, you go figure out what to do with it, preferably with 10 browser tabs open to a wiki and a cheat-code mindset locked and loaded." It rewards players who show up with a build in mind and the patience to break the systems before the systems break them. I want to lie down. I want a plot. I want a game to gently take my hand and say, let me show you something nice. This one grabbed my hand and said, okay so first you're going to want to read this 47-page mechanics breakdown. If I wanted to spend hours mastering an opaque system through trial and error in pursuit of an elusive optimal outcome, I would simply sit for an exam. At least an exam gives you a certificate at the end. Also, per the global achievements: only 80% of players have made it past Chapter 1. Out of 15 Chapters. One in five tapped out before the game had even finished clearing its throat. To all, and myself. Sometimes it's okay to buy a game and not finish it. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for both you and the game is admit: we are not for each other. I wish it well. I hope it finds someone who will love it the way it deserves. It will not be me.

I absolutely love the disagea series and this game makes no exception. Since a few days (03-22-2026), I was able to play the game normally (meaning, without any trick or configuration whatsovever, see the italic part of this review). And I think it is due to a Windows 11 update somewhere (but I couldn't tell when exactly). This is obviously good news and I'm able to enjoy the game again, hence I change the review to positive as NIS was not at the source of the issue (while it would still have been nice to have some communication there). Unfortunately, on Windows 11, the game doesn't run well and will very frequently lock the PC because of a thread issue (no threads left and even the OS stops responding) This btw, seems to affect all disgaea on PC. Now, as the game afaik runs properly on Win10, it does look more like a MS issue. But it would be nice if we could get some publisher/dev attention to help resolve the issue. anyway, I want to inform people about the issues they might encounter on Win 11, hence the negative review. The game is otherwise great, hoping they fix it.
unplayable on win11
★★☆☆☆ (2/5)
Disgaea 7 really feels like one of those entries that mostly exists for people who were already fans of the series rather than something strong enough to stand on its own. If you already love Disgaea’s signature gameplay loop there’s still some enjoyment to be found here. But taken purely as a game on its own merits, it feels surprisingly weak compared to the stronger titles in the franchise. The shift from the classic 2D style to 3D was especially disappointing for me. A lot of the visual charm and personality that made earlier entries feel so distinct just doesn’t hit the same here. On top of that, the story and cast are… fine, I guess, but nothing really reaches the charisma or memorability of icons like Laharl, Valvatorez, or Killia. Overall, I’d only really recommend Disgaea 7 if you’re already a dedicated fan who knows exactly what you’re here for. If you’re new to the series or looking for a standout strategy RPG, there are much better starting points.
So in regards to this game, I can give a tentative yes in regards to recommending it. And that is because of the nature of the game itself. So the series is one that I am familiar with, and I have been playing well since I was in middle school. And it is a game that you can easily grind and lose hundreds upon hours of your life to I enjoy the aspect of grinding of min/Maxing numbers and the stories is always there and entertaining and the latest entry of the game fixes a lot of what the previous entry has done. I can easily admit for the previous entry. I lost interest about 5 hours in. But with this entry, the story was compelling. I enjoyed the new mechanics, and it is something that reinfigurated my love of the series, though, I'm not the biggest fan of the 3D animation, I prefer this sprites the series in and of itself was reinvented. Just enough to keep me entertained and interested, while also keeping that feeling of familiarity, it is not the greatest in the franchise, but it was entertaining. My biggest complaint is the end game, and the feeling of homogeny, for most of the characters where in order to beat the best challenges, you more or less, have to do the same thing with everybody and there's not a lot of ways to solve. If you do go through the main story, then it's perfect. And there's enough room for you to make a diversity of build sets and cast.
Sadly, compared to the other entries in the series, there isn't enough soul in this game to make it worth playing. The story was too full of conveniences, sudden changes of heart at the end of the chapters despite not fleshing out the character's relations and story within a reasonable time frame to make the player care for what's happening. I found myself completely unattached to any of the characters, although I do like the designs of them. The lack of animations during the visual novel events, most of the previous entries would have small attention to details (Nearly ALL of the characters having some small animation like blinking, slight movement. Disgaea 4: Valvatorez swishing his cape around, Disgaea 5: Killua changing from a casual to a fighting pose etc.) As for the combat, there's the obvious switch from 2D to 3D during the gameplay which has many people divided about the changes, and while I can appreciate the ambition to make that change... It sadly does feel like it cheapens the overall product. Disgaea is known for it's over the top attacks and crazy abilities, but I felt like all of the abilities I used lacked... polish? For example, the first gun ability you get is a series classic and isn't too over the top, but in this game when you try to use it the character shoots the gun to the left side of the screen and then it cuts to black for maybe like half a second and then the enemy receives the damage. Seeing this was really disappointing. Another thing that lacked polish was the audio balancing, simple things like voting and attacking many enemies at once caused the audio to stack on each other and it became super loud. I wanted to like this game after watching a reviewer sing its praises, but the more I play it the more I want to play some of the older titles. Considering how quickly NIS released this game after Disgaea 6 had me worried, and I was right to. It tried to do some fun things, but everything just really is unpolished. If you have FOMO like I did, don't bother with this one. I hope NIS can capture the greatness that is this series in the next one.
Another cool Disgaea game. Just like most of the previous ones, the humor is ok and the story is fine. The fun is in the menues and automation and setting everything up and the grind. Its the best game systems wise in the series imo. Play it if you play these games for that. If you are looking for another D1 story, it doesnt exist here.
