In a magic age, where dragons ruled and the world of Desola was at the height of its glory, a demonic portal opened its infernal abyss in the shadowlands. The realm was ravaged by Devils & Demons.

Put some hours into it hoping to find some satisfying tactical combat and storytelling in a generic dark fantasy setting. I regret to inform you that the game actually contains slow, clunky tactical combat and minimal storytelling. The pace of progression is too slow to feel like you're accomplishing much. At least it's cheap. Pretty sure it came in a bundle.
Devils & Demons is a traditional turn-based tactical RPG that draws heavily from classic fantasy roots, delivering a methodical and deliberately paced experience centered on strategic combat and party management. Developed and published by HandyGames, the game places players in the war-torn realm of Desola, a land pushed to the brink by demonic incursions, undead armies, and ancient evils unleashed through a mysterious portal. From the outset, the tone is earnest and unapologetically old-school, framing the player as a commander of the Order of the Light whose task is to assemble heroes, push back the darkness, and slowly reclaim a world on the verge of collapse. The heart of Devils & Demons lies in its grid-based combat system, which emphasizes positioning, careful planning, and long-term thinking over quick reactions. Battles unfold at a deliberate pace, requiring players to consider terrain, enemy placement, attack ranges, and the unique abilities of each unit before committing to an action. Charging blindly into combat is often punished, while smart use of choke points, ranged attacks, and coordinated abilities can turn seemingly overwhelming encounters into manageable victories. The game steadily introduces tougher enemy types and more complex scenarios, ensuring that success depends increasingly on tactical foresight rather than raw character strength. Party composition plays a significant role in shaping the overall experience. Devils & Demons offers a varied roster of heroes, each fulfilling familiar fantasy roles such as heavily armored warriors, agile fighters, spellcasters, and support units. As characters gain experience, they unlock new skills and spells that meaningfully expand their tactical usefulness, allowing players to tailor their party to preferred strategies. Equipment and loot further reinforce this sense of progression, rewarding exploration and difficult battles with gear that can noticeably shift the balance of power. While the customization systems are not excessively deep, they provide enough flexibility to encourage experimentation and adaptation as challenges escalate. Outside of combat, the game leans into exploration and campaign structure, guiding players across large maps filled with enemies, side objectives, and narrative encounters. These maps contribute to a sense of scale, making the conflict feel expansive, but they also introduce one of the game’s more divisive elements: pacing. Movement across environments can feel slow, and some maps are large enough that backtracking or extended travel becomes tedious. For players who enjoy a slow, methodical approach, this reinforces the feeling of a long campaign against overwhelming odds, but others may find that it interrupts momentum and stretches the experience longer than necessary. Visually and sonically, Devils & Demons aims for a classic fantasy atmosphere rather than modern spectacle. Character designs, enemy types, and environments are steeped in familiar imagery of demons, dragons, necromancers, and ruined strongholds. Cutscenes and illustrated elements help convey the scope of the conflict, while the soundtrack supports the epic tone with dramatic orchestral themes that underscore both battles and quieter moments. The presentation reflects the game’s origins beyond PC, and while it may not feel cutting-edge, it remains cohesive and thematically consistent throughout the campaign. Narratively, the game relies on well-worn fantasy conventions, focusing on the struggle between light and darkness rather than nuanced character drama or surprising twists. Dialogue and story beats exist primarily to contextualize the tactical gameplay, offering motivation for each campaign chapter rather than standing as a central draw. This straightforward approach works in service of the genre, though the writing can occasionally feel uneven or simplistic, particularly when compared to more narrative-driven RPGs. Still, it provides enough structure to give purpose to the long series of battles and steadily escalating threats. Taken as a whole, Devils & Demons is a game that will resonate most strongly with players who appreciate classic turn-based strategy and are comfortable with a slower, more deliberate rhythm. Its strengths lie in tactical combat, steady character progression, and a clear dedication to traditional RPG design, while its weaknesses stem from pacing issues and presentation elements that may feel dated to some. For fans of grid-based combat and methodical fantasy campaigns, it offers a lengthy and satisfying experience that rewards patience, planning, and strategic thinking over flashy innovation.
