Cold War is a great surprise. With mixed Steam reviews I expected a lot worse. It is essentially like the early Splinter Cell games, but with wider maps and many more gadgets to use at your disposal. I read many complaints about this game that it features a lot of backtracking. It is true, however the game keeps introducing new mechanics/scenarios or make a twist on the objectives that even though you are navigating through the same areas over and over again, they still made it feel quite different each time to not feel too repetitive. In my book, it was a decent use of backtracking, I've seen it done way more lazily in many games. There are 25 different gadgets/weapons/ammunition types, but to be honest, I've used only 8 through the entire game, and even of those that I've used half I did only once, twice or trice. The main problem is that many of the gadgets serve little use like mines as even if you attach the sound ringer to them the distance by which the enemy can hear them is the same as the distance by which they can spot you... Which makes a paradox, that often if you want to get close enough to plant a ringing mine which will attract the enemy to go towards, you'll have to get spotted which kills the purpose of planting a stealthy mine anyway... The easy fix for this was to increase the ringing sound distance so that enemies who are far away would get attracted to it. Sure, it would make the game super easy, but otherwise there is almost no point in using such gadgets as it is much easier to just sneak towards the enemies and knock them down unseen or use different types of gadgets instead. Even with these problems I found the stealth to be fun and pretty well utilised in the game nevertheless. Enemy A.I. is not very smart or anything special, but it was never broken unlike how it is in many other stealth games... Lastly, I found the story and writing to be great here, it certainly was better than in most stealth games I've ever played. 7/10

Surprisingly good stealth based old school Splinter Style game. I hate how many modern stealth based games have "fluid movement mechanics" and that honestly sucks. I like to take things slow and steady in a stealth game and this is what this is. Notice how older games don't have yellow paint splattered everywhere as way point markers? You have to pay attention to audio chatter and actually read the progression log to figure out what to do next. AI is half decent and gun play is fun. However, the story is very predictable and boring, and the idea that you can make less lethal ammunition, bombs, and sleeping agents out of scrap plastic, metals, and chemicals laying around everywhere on the map is hilarious. Still, interesting mechanics nonetheless. You have the option to kill enemies, knock them out, and permanently put them to sleep for the duration of the game chapter/level. It's very similar to the mechanics found in Metal Gear Solid, but simplified. They don't even alert HQ to bring in backup at all, so you can knock them out as much as you want without putting them on heightened alert status. Graphics are decent for a 2005 game originally made for the OG Xbox. For a game that cost me $1, this is a must play game with absolutely zero bugs and glitches. You do need to go to WSGF.org just to install a patch to play this game on widescreen or ultra-widescreen monitors, but that's not an issue at all. 7/10 in my books!
TL;DR: Splinter Cell, but for journalism. Set in Cold War. A mixed bag, in my opinion. Hardcore Stealth junkies would loved it anyway. And only get it on sale, for the love of f@#k. Summary: You play as a Journalist Matt Carter who after getting caught in Cold War conspiracy, must work together Grushkov, a Soviet agent who is framed for the conspiracy and must clear your name. Gameplay: If you play Splinter Cell, you already get accustom some of the basics. Movements, gun firing, Stealth, Save-scumming, all that sh!t you remember. But unlike Sam Fisher, Carter is not supersoldier. He's a journalist and his only strategy is hide and shoot when necessary and no parkour skill whatsoever. Aside from the pistol, you are provided with a set of skills from using junk as your tools. Like Bottle as either a Non-Lethal Bullets or a limited Suppressor. There is also alarms and lure, which is pretty much standard stuff. To craft this stuff, you need a collectible of materials, which you'll gather in most of your playthrough. In those Materials, included Blueprints (sort of like cash in this game), which provided you with more stuff to buy/learn. Also, if you expecting guns blazing, don't expect it in this game. Just watch a YouTube playthough. Pros: Not a lot. It's a Splinter Cell, but toned down without the whole tactical sh!t and civilian protagonist. The story is okay IMO. Cons: Some bugs and The AI is absolute bonkers! But to give you a rundown, here's some the things I noted. - The AI can be dumb. But sometimes, they're also smart. What I mean by that is, when I walk behind them slowly, they went 360 No Scope on my a$$ and GAME OVER! Every time they did that, I went WTF?! - Shooting enemies is crap! It took 6 bullets to the chest to f@#k!ng dispose their a$$ and sometimes Headshot required two rounds into the face! I'm not joking! - When enemies shoot you, your camera goes up, which prevent your to recover your shot. And when they fired another bullets, BAM! You're dead! - When the Spetnaz shows up. you can kiss stealth goodbye. - Escorting Grushkov is tedious! He either succeeded sometimes or gets killed, when you lead him to the objective room. Yes, there is Escort mission here. If you don't like it, too bad! - The game has no widescreen. But have no fear, children! Go to PCGamingWiki and search the game. You will find more details there. - It also has NO NATIVE CONTROLLER SUPPORT. So, yeah, those of you who played this on the original Xbox, sorry bruv. The dev forgot to put it. Steam Input is some of your answers, but that's just not the same! There is no Button Prompt/Glyph. So in-case if you haven't memorized this game, you're pretty much stuck with K+M UI. VERDICT: Is this game bad? Absolutely not! It's actually alright IMO. But the CONS above are just the things that makes the game MEH. While I like some of the Concept, Stealth and how it tried to be more than a Splinter Cell clone, It's a mixed-bag for me, personally. Not trying to sound too harsh for those that like the game, but it can be janky. So if you really wanna experience it, Whether you are new or from the old Retail/Disc owner or original Xbox players, I can only simply say "Wait for sale". 6.6/10

Cold War, developed by Mindware Studios and published by THQ Nordic, is a third-person stealth action game that plunges players into the tense political climate of the 1980s. Released in 2005, the game casts players as Matthew Carter, an American journalist who is falsely accused of being a CIA assassin while investigating a story in Moscow. Stripped of his identity and imprisoned by the KGB, Carter must navigate a treacherous world of espionage, subterfuge, and moral ambiguity to uncover the truth and clear his name. The game blends stealth mechanics, inventive problem-solving, and a politically charged narrative to deliver a distinctive experience. The core gameplay revolves around stealth, improvisation, and creative approaches to objectives. Direct confrontation is often discouraged, requiring players to think strategically and utilize the environment to their advantage. Carter can craft a variety of gadgets from everyday objects—such as rubber bullets, gas mines, and tracking devices—allowing for multiple solutions to the same problem. This emphasis on improvisation provides flexibility in playstyle and encourages experimentation, whether players prefer silent infiltration, misdirection, or tactical sabotage. The narrative of Cold War is one of its strongest elements, weaving a story of political intrigue, deception, and the morally gray world of espionage. Set against the backdrop of Moscow during the height of Cold War tensions, the game captures the atmosphere of suspicion and paranoia with detailed environments, from shadowy alleyways to heavily guarded government facilities. Dialogue and voice acting contribute to the sense of immersion, providing context and depth to both the protagonist and the supporting cast, though some interactions can occasionally feel formulaic. The story challenges players to question loyalties, motives, and the reliability of information, reinforcing the game’s central themes. Visually, Cold War conveys the era with environments that feel authentic and lived-in, though the graphics are functional rather than spectacular. Character models and animations can feel stiff by modern standards, and technical issues such as inconsistent frame rates, texture pop-in, and occasional animation glitches are present. The artificial intelligence can be inconsistent as well, with enemy patrols sometimes failing to react realistically, which can both aid and frustrate players. Additionally, the game’s checkpoint system has uneven spacing, occasionally forcing players to replay long sections after a failure, which can interrupt the pacing of the experience. Despite its technical shortcomings, Cold War offers a compelling and innovative take on the stealth action genre. Its crafting system, emphasis on improvisation, and branching tactical approaches distinguish it from many contemporaries. The game rewards careful planning, observation, and adaptability, making each successful mission feel satisfying and earned. Players who enjoy methodical stealth gameplay, environmental problem-solving, and narrative-driven missions will find plenty to appreciate in the game’s design. Ultimately, Cold War is a distinctive stealth action title that captures the tension and intrigue of Cold War-era espionage. While it may exhibit flaws in technical performance and AI behavior, its inventive mechanics, immersive storytelling, and flexible approaches to gameplay make it a memorable experience. For fans of stealth and strategy, and those intrigued by the morally complex world of spies and covert operations, Cold War offers a challenging and engaging journey into a shadowy and uncertain past.
