You play Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT specialist who's been handpicked to oversee the defensive needs of one of America's most experimental biotechnology firms. I play this game once or twice every year because I loved it so much when it was first released. It is the game that got me into the cyberpunk genre, with Cyberpunk 2077 being the game that reinforced that interest. It has everything I like to play in a science fiction futuristic rpg. While the graphics are definitely showing its age by 2026 standards, it still is impressive to play for its story, characters, and gameplay mechanics. It doesn't come close to the numerous alternate paths, possibilities and destructible items that Deus Ex: The Conspiracy had, but it is still a solid reboot/prequel in the series that makes up for it in various ways.
Absolute banger of a game, aged wonderfully, great gameplay, weapon/level design etc. mixed in with paranoid schizophrenic/Epstein-tier worldbuilding. Jensen (the protagonist) is gigabased, and can be as much of a crooked cop or a saint as you want him to be
(but mostly he's just a self-insert for conspiracy schizos (but in a good way)).
There's VERY few games which allow you to achieve objectives in so many alternate ways, it really cannot be overstated. You're rewarded for prodding and poking around, thinking outside the box (and when you do you will be surprised that the devs actually foresaw what you came up with and put it into game). Not to spoil anything, but that includes mission outcomes that seem to be set in stone, at a first glance. Old-school game making, with attention to detail and actual SOVL put into it. 10/10, embrace the chud within, expose the [REDACTED], augument your fruitflies.
Overall grade: B++ Enjoyable? Yes Recommended? To cyberpunk/conspiracy fans who wouldn’t mind an almost 15 year old game with decent gameplay and a better story Replayability: Medium-Low +cyberpunk themed FPS with RPG / stealth-ish elements +good story with great ending(s); extremely interesting dialogue/options and philosophical themes presented throughout +choose your approach—sneak past enemies or blast them; huge levels with multiple paths and solutions +hacking mechanics; augmentation upgrades that impact gameplay; weapon variety (lethal/nonlethal) and inventory management +impressive OST, good voice acting and overall atmosphere and design +/-my first and only playthrough was stealth-based. And though these stealth mechanics aren’t really sophisticated, they’re still serviceable. (Note: for this reason, I cannot comment on a lethal or overt approach) +/-boss fights were abit odd primarily because the OP typhoon would easily two-shot them, ending battles in seconds +/-though the gameplay was decently entertaining, the story and dialogue were what kept me playing Minor gripes: -an annoying character (Pritchard) talks in your ear for the first 2/3 of the game; few likable characters -even in populated areas, the city streets didn’t feel “alive.” Most NPCs (civilians, specifically) felt like props rather than people -too many emails to sift through with only the minority being significant/interesting imo. I eventually ignored most of them unless they were locked behind a high security system Gripes: -some gameplay and story bloat I could’ve done without, especially with the DLC plopped in there Steam Deck compatibility: ✅ Runs smoothly with no issues at all ~6hrs at full battery with max video settings @60fps Widescreen ✔️ Offline playable ✔️
I've played through this a few times over the years, both on Steam as well as when I first got it on the PS3...every single time I try to come back to it, though, leaves me wondering how I ever finished it. It's...rough. Like, extremely rough. I don't mean graphically which, despite it's age, I think largely still holds up. Part of that is how stylized everything is. It's no Viewtiful Joe in that department, but it's just enough so that it's lack of realism doesn't shoot it in the foot a few console generations down the line. I'm talking in terms of gameplay. I don't want this to be CoD nor does it need to be...but it should at least be functional and I just don't get that when I come back to it. It's an RPG, sure, but with a heavy, HEAVY, emphasis on combat and you'd think that it would have the tools and feedback needed to make that a decent experience. Right? Except no, because I promise I shoot some of these guys with my reticule over their head, which should be an instant kill/knock out, so I'd like to know why they are not only still up but also now shooting at me. I do not know what happened and that is a problem, game. Likewise, as I save scum through an introductory level, a good sign of quality right there, why can I knock out a guy 3 times in a row and no alert, but then the fourth try, he's seen by another guy in the room, a guy who doesn't move, so his perspective isn't the issue. I do not know what happened and that is a problem, game. If I don't know what is happening, as a player, how do I correct my actions? How do I even know the problem is my actions? I am not, I promise, asking for omniscient code to explicitly tell me what is happening...but I'd like the basics of game design and those seem to be absent... Further, I know from past playthroughs that even were I to overlook the gameplay, progression is fundamentally flawed. For that point, what I mean is that I shouldn't be able to talk to two friends who played the same game but have different playstyles and yet all three of us have almost identical builds. You have done something wrong in your game design if that's the case... I value the time and memories I have of the game, but looking back with an honest and critical eye, I can safely say that this is not "must play gaming" and you do not need to add it to your library.

horrible port, stutters like crazy on a gaming pc over 10 years newer than this game, no proper UI scaling for modern resolutions, game breaking bug that prevents you from finishing the game. don't play this version
jogo muito bom
That was really cool. Graphically it holds up, the systems are intuitive and the gameplay is fun. I enjoyed the setting, characters and overall story arc. There are hub areas where you can do side quests before the next story milestone takes you to the next area, there are different abilities that suit tank, stealth or hybrid playstyles, as well as augmenting your character there are weapons that can be upgraded with parts that can be found purchased or awarded from side quests.
