I'll admit, I am not a fan of pixel graphics, and I rarely play them. I lean toward games with realistic, stylish, pretty graphics, and pixel art just doesn't do it for me. What can I say, I'm just drawn to eye-candy. However, because of the very positive ratings, and the deep discount, I decided to take a chance with this game. I don't regret that decision, as I very much enjoyed Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders. The story was captivating and it drew me in. Perhaps, it even opened me up a little to trying other pixel games. A good story can indeed drive a game and push one forward to completion. The game probably takes a good 6 to 8 hours to complete, which is decent for the current price. Never mind my time, I leave games running between play times and saves, rather than shutting down and having to restart.
I love pixel games like this, very well made. I'm only 1 case in but I can say without a doubt it's got some beautiful atmospheric traditional chinese music, great puzzles if not a tad simple (maybe it's because it's only the first case so far, plots that make sense etc. If you like this you'll like Tales of the Neon Sea (cyberpunk theme) which was my first every detective point and click game which I love so much to this day.
As someone who read and enjoyed the novels with Di, a point'n'click starring him seemed like a no-brainer. Alas, I was quite wrong, with two main gripes. The first one is that, while you are supposed to play a detective's role... It falls short. Once you find a correct clue, it's automatically added and the reenactment won't ask too much of your brain cells- even if you fail, there are no consequences. The game then defaults to the classic item combinations and pixel-hunting. The setting adds a certain flavor but is not enough to veil the fact that Di doesn't have to unravel much, convenient witnesses and situations keep happening around him. So while there are twists and turns in the story, I felt difficult to feel involved as so little hinged on my skills. My other gripe is while the game is rather short, it contains blatant padding, including some puzzles just for the sake of not going straight to the next scene. Sometimes it feels natural - like solving two riddles for bickering siblings in the imperial library, even though the riddles themselves are too easy - sometimes, it's baffling. In one instance you have to conveniently solve a coded message, in order to convince a woman that her sister is still alive, wich prompts her to remove her lanterns meant for departed soulds, which in turns reassures a fisherman, allowing him to transport you to a floating pagoda. Even taking into account Di is a very decent man, he is a magistrate - a powerful figure of authority, investigating, you know, a freakin' murder. He could just order people around or have an officer with him if muscle is needed. Of course, that would make things too easy - on the other hand, having him perform menial tasks (like saving a cat !) while the clock is ticking is more than perplexing, but without those silly puzzles and interactions, the game could be some 1 our 2 hour(s) shorter, six hours being enough to finish it. In the end there was potential but the format doesn't fit.
goood I'd like to play more stories about Di
可以的
Beautiful 2D detective game. I think it did a good job blending humor with murder and historical references to the Tang Dynasty. The puzzles are very straightforward and simple. One gave me a lot of trouble solely because I was massively overthinking the solution, haha.
Very fun game! Love the pixel art, some of the puzzles are hard but some brain power (and guide checking) solves that!
