If this review says "16 minutes" it's not correctly synced to the Laptop I actually use to play this game from. I have about 3 hours of gametime, and
made it to the first H-scene on the adult patch
. I do like it, the artwork is nice, her sprite emotes every now and then, which is a step up from the static images typical to the genre of Japanese Vn's. The story is lighthearted, definetly not something to be too deeply invested in, its almost just used as a means to expedite the storyline along to fit with the narrative. Yuuri is not the worst, she's cute withe her overbearing personality, but not so over the top that she's annoying, imo. Her reveal about her true self is not that much of a surprise, as most people only have a perception of who they like, without actually knowing what the person was like, which is what happens between protag-kun and Yuuri, he falls for the initial facade she puts up, but then grow to like her real self as well. It's actually more like real life than many would like to admit, and at least Yuuri is actually upfront with her hidden self, unlike many in reality, which does make her a bit unrealistic imo.
It also leaves a lot to be desired in how it is everyone would be okay with protag-kun and Yuuri ending up living together through plot elements in the story. It's sort of just brushed aside, and we're left with a no answer for it.
I will say as a critism, the mosaic is over the top. Probably the worst i've seen in a while. I'll never understand Japan and their wariness of true nudity, but I still dig the stories they make. They even put in a censor "PING" that is attempted to be drowned out when they say naughty words like
♥♥♥♥
... it's very jarring if you don't expect it. They attempted to drown out the ping's loudness, but it's still evident in the game. A final complaint will be that autotext is binded by default to F2, which is my volume control... Which means I can't auto scroll text. I don't mind clicking through the story as much this time for some reason, compared to other Eroge Visual Novels. I guess the story is involving enough to help me not notice. Those are basically the only complaints I have, the first one is inherent to Eroge's, but the second one confounds me, I haven't come across an Eroge before that censored words with loud pings to drown out the VA while they say the line, instead of simply not saying the line. I hope the other two sequels have improved UI, as this was okay, but basic, and lacked functions I would expect of a VN, as they were binded to controls, instead of having the option to scroll to via mouse like 90% of most Eroge Vn's I usually play. But the story is solid enough to keep me engaged, lighthearted enough to make me not too invested in the story, but not to apathetic to the characters to where I don't care about them, It rides a fine line between having very little plot compared to having mainly character development between the Protag and Yuuri. If I were to rate this, it'd be a 8/10. I'd say if you really like a light premise for a Eroge Visual Novel, and you don't mind having barebones functions, as well as being a fan of the artwork, then I'd say it's worth it on sale. The main gripes I sort of have are there is a lack of day to day development between them after day one, as it's sort of just jumpcuts to "and them a month passed" and so forth. Instead of conveying time going by, by showing it, they instead tell it... which is kind of a tone killer for any novel imo, as it set's aside questions the audience may have about what happens between them going forward. I really like Yuuri's sprites, they're varied enough, and use very aesthetically pleasing artwork.
Destiny Star Girlfriend 1 intrigued me for a few reasons when I found about it. First, it's a rare take on the magical girl genre, offering a moege romcom set in a magical girl universe. In my experience, most magical girl-themed visual novels tend to lean toward dark or nukige territory (eg Dead End Aegis and Holy Valkyrie EXS-TiA), so this light-hearted approach was a refreshing change. But what really got me to jump into the game immediately was learning that Mirai is a sister company of Minatosoft—the developers behind Majikoi, one of my all-time favorite visual novels. To quote Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction: "Sheeett, that's all you had to say!" And while Destiny Star Girlfriend isn't exactly like Majikoi, there are some similarities. It's primarily a slice-of-life comedy with a sprinkle of magical girl action, and the story unfolds episodically. This first entry in the series focuses on Yurii Kamiizumi, a blonde, egotistical magical girl who is not quite the person she presents herself as at school. Like many magical girls, Yurii must keep her identity a secret, but she takes it a step further by crafting a completely different persona—a sweet, caring girl—leading her to become quite popular. Our protagonist, Seiji Takasugi, develops a crush on this idealized version of Yurii but thinks of it as a lost cause, considering himself just an average guy. However, an amusing series of events leads to a literal bond between the two after they both get injured early on. A representative from the magical girl society (posing as a school nurse) uses a magical technique to stitch a red thread between Seiji and Yurii, which heals their injuries over the next three months. The catch? If they stray more than a meter apart during this healing process, they start feeling excruciating pain. So, they’re forced to live together for three months while the thread heals their wounds. This setup leads to a lot of light-hearted and often hilarious moments, as Seiji and Yurii navigate their new living situation. They pretend to be a couple to hide the forced connection, and the two are constantly trying to work out the logistics of always being within a meter of each other. Cue some typical eroge moments, including a lot of fanservice, accidental walk-ins, and amusing attempts at privacy, all while Yurii's over-the-top personality takes center stage. Now, how much you enjoy Destiny Star Girlfriend 1 largely depends on how you feel about Yurii’s arrogant, self-absorbed nature. At first, I was conflicted. On one hand, it’s refreshing to have a main heroine who is genuinely confident, not just a tsundere with a fake tough-girl attitude. On the other hand, Yurii's constant boasting and sense of superiority can be a bit grating. Thankfully, her character is more than just a one-note diva, and her growth over the course of the game made her far more endearing. By the end, she's a much more likeable person, even if her core personality remains the same. There’s also some amusing use of broken English (Engrish) from Yurii, which adds to the charm of her character. Seiji, the protagonist, is also a pleasant surprise. He’s no pushover and has a snarky, witty attitude that balances out Yurii's ego. He’s not afraid to roast her when she gets too full of herself, and his interactions with her are often a highlight. As for the magical girl elements, they’re there, but they take a backseat to the character interactions. The magical girls in the story, called "Stars," work for the "Starry Sky Council," fighting demons in typical magical girl fashion. While this gives the story some background flavor, it’s not the main focus. The magical girl stuff, including demon-fighting and contract negotiations, at least has more depth than expected, though the contract stuff isn't mentioned much in the sequels. It’s a fun concept, but the magical girl action doesn’t take up a large chunk of the story. Instead, it serves as a backdrop for character development and some amusing moments. The magical girl action scenes themselves are decent but brief and have very... "budget" animations. They mostly serve as plot devices to move things along rather than being the main attraction. Still, they’re fun to watch, especially when Yurii enthusiastically shouts her attack names. Destiny Star Girlfriend 1 is more or less Yuuri’s route in the series, and future entries explore other heroines like Maja, Kanoko, and even the teacher Fujiko. While Yuuri’s route serves as a solid introduction to the world and the tone of the series, I found that the later routes, especially Maja (DSG2) and Kanoko’s (DSG3) as an overall improvment. The others are just more likable characters, and the magical girl elements become more central to the plot in those routes. However, I will admit Yuuri’s route still has the best relationship banter and romantic development in the series, which helps DSG1 stick out from the later entries. Speaking of, one of the biggest surprises for me was how well the romance developed in DSG1. I initially feared this would be just another sex-heavy nukige, given the premise of the main characters being forced to stay together. But instead of rushing into intimacy, the romance unfolds slowly and naturally. The introduction of sex into their relationship is handled in a more thoughtful way than I expected, especially given how quickly things can escalate in modern eroge. That said, this is still an eroge, so there’s plenty of perverted humor, fanservice, and some fake-out make-out scenes that don’t lead to actual H-scenes. In retrospect though, DSG1 still better handled H scenes better compared to Destiny Star 2, 3 and even Fujiko route. The later games either forced H scenes a lot earlier (DSG2) or in much more cringe ways (DSG3). Overall, I had a blast with Destiny Star Girlfriend 1. While Yurii’s ego and the overuse of perverted humor took some getting used to, Yuuri's development over time made her much more enjoyable. The humor also evolved as the story progressed, keeping things fresh. This isn’t a groundbreaking visual novel by any means, but if you’re a fan of magical girl romcoms or over-the-top comedic writing, you’ll likely have a good time. The game has around 13 chapters, and I’d say it’ll take you about 8-9 hours to complete, though I spent about 16 hours on full auto-read. If you really can't handle Yuuri and are more interested in the other girls, I think DSG2 and 3 do a good job making sure you don't NEED Destiny Star 1 to enjoy those. Final rating: 7.5/10.
