Really wish you could change the controls in this game. This game has a really awkward control scheme for me. It's not a bad game, and I think that if you master the controls it would be a moderately enjoyable, albeit a little stiff, game. Enemies in this game aren't hard, it is just hard to control yourself while fighting them off at times. The platform placement is good, but once again the controls are your worst enemy, and it is just frustrating to do. This thing was like $0.50 so what can be expected. I might come back to this, but dang. *Edit* - I'd recommend it if you want to show it to your friends as a joke or something(what I've been doing), but it still stands. I finished it and it would have taken even longer if I hadn't accidentally stumbled across a... negative lives glitch? Idk if it is intentional or not, but I just stood in place for a while and it activated on me. Worth the amount I paid for it, but no more than that.

The well-written dialogue and memorable characters add depth and emotional resonance to the overall experience. While Desert of Doitjma excels in many areas, it does have a few minor drawbacks. The controls, at times, can feel slightly clunky, particularly during precise platforming sections. Additionally, some puzzles may require more guidance or hints, as their complexity can lead to occasional frustration. However, these issues do not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the game. Desert of Doitjma is a visually stunning and captivating adventure that successfully blends exploration, puzzle-solving, and storytelling. With its mesmerizing desert landscapes, engaging gameplay, and an intriguing narrative, it is sure to delight fans of the genre. Despite some minor flaws, the game stands as a testament to the developers' creativity and dedication. Embark on this mystical journey, and you'll find yourself enthralled by the secrets that lie within the Desert of Doitjma.
Desert of Doitjma is an indie action-platformer developed by Conmtrast and published by LGV that combines retro-inspired gameplay with a mysterious science-fiction premise. The game embraces the simplicity of classic platformers while presenting its own surreal setting in which the player must navigate a dangerous alternate dimension. Rather than relying on complex systems or elaborate mechanics, the experience focuses on careful movement, enemy avoidance, and steadily increasing challenges that test the player’s reflexes and timing. Its straightforward design and pixel-style visuals evoke the feeling of older arcade titles, where progress depended on mastering level layouts and surviving increasingly difficult obstacles. The story centers on a young protagonist named Murphy, who suddenly finds himself transported into an unfamiliar world ruled by a powerful and enigmatic entity known as Doitjma. Stranded in this strange environment, Murphy is forced to participate in a series of survival trials created by this mysterious figure. The only way to escape the alternate dimension is to complete these challenges and gather a set of keys scattered across the world. Each key represents progress toward confronting Doitjma directly and reclaiming Murphy’s freedom. Although the narrative unfolds gradually and remains somewhat minimalistic, it provides enough context to motivate the player’s journey through the hostile terrain. The world Murphy explores is divided into several sectors, each representing a different region of the strange dimension in which he is trapped. These areas introduce new environmental designs, enemies, and obstacles that progressively increase the difficulty of the game. Early sections act as an introduction to the movement system and basic hazards, allowing players to become comfortable with the controls and mechanics. As the player advances further into the world, however, the levels become more complex and demanding, requiring careful timing and quick reactions to survive. Gameplay revolves primarily around classic platforming mechanics. Players guide Murphy across platforms, jump over gaps, and avoid various dangers scattered throughout each stage. Movement is intentionally simple and responsive, emphasizing the importance of precision when navigating tight spaces or avoiding enemies. Because the game does not rely heavily on special abilities or complex combat systems, the challenge comes from mastering the movement and learning how to react to the hazards placed throughout the environment. Enemies appear frequently across the different sectors of the game, adding tension to each level. These creatures vary in behavior and movement patterns, forcing players to adapt their strategy depending on the situation. Some enemies follow predictable routes that can be avoided with careful timing, while others behave more aggressively and attempt to attack the player directly. Successfully navigating these encounters often requires observation and patience, as rushing through an area without understanding enemy behavior can quickly lead to failure. The key-collection system forms the backbone of the game’s progression. Each sector contains hidden or difficult-to-reach keys that must be obtained in order to unlock new areas of the world. Finding these keys often requires exploring dangerous sections of the environment and overcoming particularly challenging sequences of obstacles. This mechanic encourages players to pay attention to their surroundings and carefully examine each level rather than simply racing toward the exit. The level design frequently combines multiple hazards to create tense platforming sequences. Players may need to jump across moving platforms while avoiding enemies or carefully time their movements through narrow passages filled with dangers. These moments emphasize the trial-and-error nature of the gameplay, as players often learn the safest route through repeated attempts and improved timing. Visually, Desert of Doitjma adopts a colorful pixel-art style that reflects its retro influences. The characters and environments are built from simple but vibrant sprites that maintain clarity during gameplay. This minimalist visual approach allows players to easily identify hazards, enemies, and platforms while navigating the stages. Despite the simplicity of the graphics, the use of bright colors and stylized landscapes gives the world a distinctive appearance. The environments themselves contribute to the sense of exploration and mystery surrounding the alternate dimension. While the game’s title suggests a desert-like setting, the world includes a variety of surreal landscapes that extend beyond a single theme. As Murphy travels through different sectors, he encounters areas that appear alien and unpredictable, reinforcing the idea that this dimension operates under its own strange rules. Audio design in the game complements the gameplay with straightforward sound effects and atmospheric background music. The soundtrack provides a subtle sense of tension during exploration while remaining unobtrusive enough to allow players to focus on navigating the levels. Sound cues also help signal important gameplay events, such as enemy encounters or successful progress through difficult sections. The pacing of Desert of Doitjma reflects its arcade-inspired structure. Levels are relatively concise, encouraging players to retry sections multiple times as they learn the patterns of enemies and hazards. Failure is often part of the learning process, and repeated attempts gradually improve the player’s understanding of the level layouts. This structure rewards persistence and patience, two qualities commonly associated with classic platforming games. Because the game focuses heavily on core platforming mechanics, it maintains a consistent gameplay loop throughout the adventure. Players progress through sectors, collect keys, avoid enemies, and attempt to survive the increasingly difficult challenges placed before them. While the mechanics remain largely unchanged, the evolving level designs and enemy encounters help maintain a sense of progression. One notable aspect of the game is its connection to the developer’s broader fictional universe. Desert of Doitjma serves as a spin-off linked to the developer’s Spaceman series, suggesting that its events occur within a larger narrative world. This connection may add extra intrigue for players familiar with those titles, although the game itself can still be enjoyed independently. Despite its charm, the game’s simplicity may not appeal to players seeking complex gameplay systems or elaborate storytelling. The mechanics remain relatively basic, and the narrative elements are delivered sparingly. However, these limitations also reflect the game’s design philosophy, which prioritizes straightforward action and skill-based challenges over narrative complexity. For fans of retro-inspired indie games, Desert of Doitjma offers an experience reminiscent of classic platformers where mastering movement and learning enemy patterns are the keys to success. The gradually increasing difficulty provides a sense of accomplishment as players overcome each new sector and move closer to confronting the mysterious entity responsible for their predicament. Overall, Desert of Doitjma presents a compact but engaging platforming adventure set in a strange and unpredictable world. Its combination of simple mechanics, challenging level design, and mysterious narrative framework creates an experience that rewards persistence and careful play. While it may not offer the scale or variety of larger titles, it succeeds in delivering a focused retro-style challenge that captures the spirit of classic arcade platforming. Rating: 5/10
+ good gameplay + nice 8-bits aesthetics + works on my Steam Deck - requires modification of key bindings - a few misalignments (which could as well be voluntary)
It's a real torture that horizontal moving platforms doesn't reach the end and start moving in the other direction in half a block until end. Nevertheless it worth the sale cost and playing it once and forget about it. Spend less than hour to end the game.
Fun little game worth the $0.49 on sale, especially if you're familiar with how games controlled back in the 80s. You can remap the keys to a controller like any other game (which I found to be a requirement). The game is 5 (?) stages and then a longer final dungeon + final boss. It took me 16 minutes to finish. It's also very forgiving when it comes to lives.. I think I finished at -8. Give it a try! For controller mapping, I found that the following worked pretty well on an Xbox 360 controller: D-pad - arrow keys A - space X - x Right trigger - c
Lol, it had an interesting Packrat nostalgia feeling too it. But the music is nauseating
