Action-platformer-metroidvania with RPG elements. Embark on a dangerous journey and battle shadows to find the missing queen and save the kingdom. Gameplay: https://youtu.be/21-avsf0SOc A dynamic, challenging game with unique mechanics for upgrading skills, changing the main character's class, magnet polarity, and moving between the shadow and color worlds. There is no full tutorial, so read the developer's guide: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2507000/discussions/0/600789889375975335/ You explore a large open world in two modes and in two dimensions. You move between locations on a large top-down world map (reminiscent of RPG Maker), and fight and explore the environment in multi-room locations with a side view. Additionally, in certain locations, you can transition from the Shadow Realm to the Colorful Realm. Your character can run, jump, dash, slide, slow fall, cling to certain walls and climb, attack with a sword and use a grapple hook, fire magic and perform various combos, and use health flasks and a magnet. You can change your character's class and improve combo abilities in towns. You can save your game at fountains. There are also checkpoints in certain locations; you respawn there after death, but you lose some coins.
The story begins with a missing queen and a strange portal that appears in the royal garden. The chief guard tasks you, special agent Fania, with jumping into the portal to discover what lies on the other side. Although there is no guarantee that you will survive the journey, the promise of promotion and riches is enough to convince you. Your heroine is highly capable and starts with many useful skills for both traversal and combat. She has a basic sword attack, a ranged fireball that consumes magic and slowly recharges, and a grapple hook that lets you swing from specific points. The grapple can also be used as an attack. For traversal, you have a decent jump, a wall grab that works only on certain walls but allows you to stay there indefinitely, a dash that lets you pass through narrow spaces and perform a running jump, and a move where you press down to bounce on objects. This also functions as an attack. It feels refreshing to have so many abilities right from the start instead of being forced to learn them gradually as the adventure progresses. You will still learn additional moves that improve the ones you already have. The adventure takes place in two modes, individual 2D stages with platforming, enemies, and hazards, and a top down overworld where you access these stages. Although you cannot go everywhere because environmental obstacles block your path, there is still a sense of freedom. Stages are not always visible, and you might be walking through a simple forest or across the ground and suddenly enter a stage. These often contain secret gems that boost your attack or defense when you collect three of them. Stages are not very long, especially because you often need to pass through them to reach other parts of the map. However, the difficulty is brutal. The game does not hold your hand and throws challenge after challenge at you, always on the same screen. You must juggle many mechanics in close succession, making it very easy to die. In short, every normal room feels like a tough optional challenge room you would expect to see at the end of similar games, requiring precision and timing. And you do not face just one challenge per room but several chained together, so even if you survive one, any instant kill hazard will send you right back to the start of the room. This can be frustrating when backtracking, but it is somewhat improved by towns that contain teleporters to other towns. A stage has several screens, and things reset when you move between them. This allows you to grind for money or health from defeated enemies, or gather more if the screen contains a chest. However, even though you respawn at the start of a room, death is painful for your wallet because you lose a large portion of your money each time. The more you have, the more you lose. Losing a fortune is common in every stage. You can take a few hits and heal with a single potion that replenishes at fountains, which also serve as save points, but instant kill hazards are everywhere. Lasers and skulls are the worst offenders. Skulls disappear, and it is never clear whether they are fully gone or still deadly because their disappearing animation is not quite finished. Money is important for buying upgrades from a trader, including boosts to attack, defense, fireball, and potion capacity. Each purchase raises the cost of the next one, so losing money to deaths hurts more than it should. It is possible to grind it back, but doing so wastes time. The most unique feature is the two visual styles. One is black and white, where you see only black silhouettes of objects and people. The rest of the stage, such as the environment and textures, is colorless but not black, so landing jumps remains possible. The other style is full color, where the world and silhouettes have complete color and detail. You cannot switch styles at will. Style changes are tied to crystals that appear only in specific stages. Most of the game is identical in both styles, but some platforms and walls exist in only one. This can be tricky because there are two types of crystals. One switches the style permanently until you hit it again, and the other switches it only temporarily. The temporary ones are used as platforming challenges within a single room. There is also a magnet polarity mechanic that can be permanent or temporary. Both permanent crystals and magnets often appear near a save fountain. The biggest issue is the lack of maps for individual stages or any system to track progress. Stages sometimes split into two paths, one of which leads to a collectible or a secret. Secret walls exist, but they are marked with coins inside or near them, so you know something is suspicious. You might remember a stage if you visited it recently, but if you return later, you will have no idea what you already completed. Nothing shows how many secrets are in a stage or in the world, which is also a problem by simply making progress because you never know where to go next. Secrets include the gems mentioned earlier and people who grant courage, serenity, and fame. These stats matter for subclasses, and you can choose only one at certain points. Overall, the game plays great, but won’t be enjoyable to most. Every room tries to tear you apart and cause frustration, and the reward is simply another room with more ways to die. Upgrades do not matter much because success is all about platforming skill, and the lack of any way to track secrets is a major flaw.
At the point of this review, I do not recommend this game. The short of it is the bugs which leads to soft locks and major hit box collision issues. The second is the death knell of precision platformers. Examples of softlocks, I did a room that had the color switching mechanic only to realize the room has now permanently stuck on 1 colour and reverse the initial state which I entered the room which caused a block on the exit. Second I ran into a room which have canons which are on the road on the map maze that is for a black and white sequence but the cannons are not align correctly so the cannons just shoot the player character straight into death blocks. Then head back to the boss castle I beat earlier looking for a switch to reverse it to colour only to realize the black and white route has a cannon route thya causes you to be stuck at the ceiling when you hit it if you try to use air dash right after you hit it. Then even if you somehow mash your way using up dash and then air dash to get into the path, you don't have enough time to get to thru this sequence because the intention I guess was to use the air dash to get to the park but you simply can't. Would I still recommend the game if the bugs are resolved? It depends if you are a gut for sometimes literally unreactable sections where the game punishes for trying to see what you should do the next time attempt because every death takes coins away everytime you die. It takes more coins if you have more, punishing you for trying to save coins to the shop to buy upgrades. This difficulty hardly changes once you go past mid game and nears kaizo level of just dying (which the game punishes you for) and using it to figure out how to do this sequence. Did I mention that dying brings you back to the start of the room and not the last safe platform? I am not sure if I am suppose to do patterns for bosses but most of the time upgrading and upgrades just allows me to face tank the bosses. Clearly bosses are not the focus of the game. At the end of it all the movement and the combat feels good but you hardly use it because it is a precision platformer. Fundamentally the game design seems to be at odds with itself and I don't have a good recommendations to correct or least make the experience more bearable unless I am aware of what the game dev's design goals are.
This is a very good game. the controls are tight (tho I had 1 issue, more on that later) the graphics good and the levels tough. deserves more attention from people [strike] however, as it stands now it has a few issues first of all a game breaking bug, when getting the split shot I experienced a game breaking bug that trapped me, the route back had cannons but 1 is out of line meaning you hit skulls, so you cannot get past. So I decide to re-enter the castle and go another way, maybe its a way out or a colour swap, that way I hit the hardest room by far in the game, which I beat and next room had no entrance so I was trapped. as of now, do not go for the split shot in the mountain area until its fixed, check discussion for the thread [/strike] These appear fixed now I had hit and miss controls at 1 point (Think its part 3 of my videos) I'm unsure if it was the steam controller or the game, I had it a little before but never like that, I struggled on and in part 4 it started again, I rebooted the controller and it was fine https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG7AHn82td7Gp4wIlHzygiw1WP-HaJhut
The game was good... Until the third fight with the Emperor. That fights show me one thing: this game was never properly beta-tested. The Main Character doesn´t have enough movement or skills to avoid the attacks, which never stop and gives the player no oportunity to win. You may call it skill issue, i think this is poorly designed.
Looked fun. Then I played it, and better than expected.
https://youtu.be/N3Naav7-oqo
Muy buen juego!
