This version is garbage. It no longer works on modern hardware and Steam doesn't update it. So you you spent money on this you've now got an unplayable game. It's better you buy off GOG or get yourself the original CD version. On GOG they actually fix games not just money grab. Sorry Steam, you're in the wrong here, users should be entitled to refunds on broken titles.
The opening cinematic still gives me chills after 25 years.
This game is SERIOUSLY slept on. This is my dad's favorite game of all time and I see why. He has good taste. This version had trouble running on my modern PC however, and it would be really cool to get a remaster someday.
While this is quite an old game, there's still strong community support for it and it's one of the greatest space combat sims out there. Sure, X-Wing/TIE Fighter and Wing Commander are the kings, but the quality of delivery for Freespace and Freespace 2 puts it in my mind as equal to those games. I had as much fun playing Freespace and Freespace 2 as I did any of the Wing Commander/X-Wing games. On a technical basis, yes, it's dated, but in this case I think the reward outweighs the hassle of installing community patches and tweaking the game to run in 4K. Also it's overpriced, so this is worth picking up on sale only... as always, nostalgia gouges aren't okay. However, out of the box this game just doesn't work on Windows 10/11. Freespace 2 is probably a better game to go with.
Freespace, and its successor, Freespace 2, are the best space sims of their generation. I played both extensively in my teenage years. I joined the multiplayer community where players could gain control of star systems in an overarching and ever-changing campaign. I recall being a member of DarkWing at the time, specializing in bomber craft. I would build basic missions using FRED or FRED2 and practice bombing runs! It was a wild ride. Fast forward to the present, and the drought of space sim games becomes evident. It is a genre that deserves revival - something that VR may help achieve. Star Wars: Squadrons is the best of the current crop,. It distills many of the excellent features and experiences of the sims that came before it, Freespace included. If you love space sim games, there's so many from the 90's. Start with Freespace, and you won't be disappointed! I just wish Volition, before they were shuttered, stopped making Saint's Row games for a hot minute and revived this classic franchise. Alas, Interplay made it difficult for them, as they always do.
I love this game it is amazing BUT it won't run normally direct from Steam you have to do a bunch of stuff just to get it to run properly, stuff which I don't know how or what to do. This crashes my computer every time I open it. You shouldn't have to download stuff or alter stuff to play a game from the 90s with the tech we have today it should be easy enough for them to make it able to run without a problem but sadly this is not the case. If you want to play this game then expect hassles getting it to run, I personally only have it in my list because I'm a die hard fan who's loved it since it 1st came out & I hope one day that they'll fix it so it can be played easily on steam. So even though I do think this game is amazing & worth playing if you don't want hassles trying to get it to run give this a pass until they fix the game. Same goes for Freespace 2.
IF you were ever planning to buy this, don't. just get FreeSpace 2, Knossos, FSPort, and ur good
Descent: Freespace - The great War is a space sim from 1998, and while revolutionary back then, looks somewhat dated today and can be tricky to get running on modern hardware. However, it's an awesome game that was way ahead of its time, and has excellent missions, including some great dog fighting, If you're interested in the Freespace series then you might want to checkout hard-light.net, which enhances Freespace 2 with FreeSpace Open. There's also a lot of community content there to expand the game.
The best space shooter ever to exist ever. There is no argument. Freespace 2 was the only game that surpassed it. If you do the open source code it takes on new life. Once again possibly one of the best games ever made and I still do play throughs more then once a year.
this game is a complete space sim its incredible for its age. very immersive for the time period i highly recommend this game to all people who are fans of space and space conflicts.
