This game's early access was bumpy and it took a few years to actually finish the game in the way the devs intended. Basically things got messy and the game was never really polished, they also left it in an incomplete state for long periods of time with no updates. Over time it eroded the good will of players who actually liked the game. Unfortunately the reviews don't paint an accurate picture of this game's quality. The gameplay is fantastic, the combat is interesting and fun, but the game struggles to teach you how to play it. There are still many cards and items that don't have clear descriptions and now all development has ended. As someone who's played a lot of this game, I can say this is a game that is fun and especially effective in short bursts. I've purchased a lot of other rogue-lites since I got this game but I continue to come back to this one because the gameplay is basically perfect. Other reviews are accurate in saying that the game feels flawed at the opening because it really never becomes clear how you should progress. Progression is simple, but the fact is you have to figure out every step on your own. Its obvious enough that after 10 or 20hrs you'll have a good handle on the progression but its a frustrating experience learning how to play this game. Once I mastered it, i somewhat lost my motivation to play. So much of the allure for me was how to proceed. Once I figured it out I stopped playing without even finishing the game, I knew I could finish it and that was enough for me. If this game is more than $8 or $9 I'd say its a pass, but around $5 its an absolute bargain.
An attempt at becoming a Souls-like game but with a twist. What I liked was the visuals. The running animation was smooth, the graphics were pretty and it really shows that the devs really tried. I also like the co9ncept of random cards becoming your gear. It's new and definitely something you do not see often in rpgs. What I think needs some work is the jumping and grappling hook animation. Frankly the grappling hook is just weird, may as well allow the vessel double jump, it makes more sense. The world is empty!! From one camp of baddies to the next, there is nothing visually interesting. The world is big but filled with trees and grass most of the time. Oh my god, the lack of voiceover really threw me off. In a game like that, I was expecting to see even a small voiceover on the npcs when you use their shop. The battle is repetitive and lacks any need for skill or actual strategy. You just go and smash your way through the npcs and get your loot. Now repeat that for every camp, even the bosses... No interesting mechanics to be seen. Whilst I praised above the concep0t of random cards being your gear, they do need mana to be used. Mana is not generated, is earned by doing camps and again, you may or may not get some, rendering the whole system kinda obsolete. I can't use that fancy armour card cause I need 4 mana stones but if I want to get mana stones I need to kill that camp over there. I can't kill that camp over there BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT GEAR EQUIPPED! Overall the game was not what I expected it to be and I asked for a refund after playing it for nearly 2 hours. I do believe it has potential but it has a loooong way to get there.
I might come back to add more to this, but I have to say, I'm not sure why it's got so many negative reviews. The game is pretty straight forward with what it is giving you from the jump. Killing enemies to increase the Hatred Level makes it more challenging (obviously) and that's good. I've seen people saying "it punishes exploration." No, it doesn't, it gives you something to do to make each play a little different. The "Hatred Corruption" mechanic is good for game hoarders like me. It really makes you think about what you may or may not want to sacrifice, or if you want to punish yourself for getting too greedy or distracted from what you need to do. Yes, the story is pretty light, but that's okay. I picked it up the first time after work tonight, and honestly, it fits perfectly into the "I need to turn off my brain for a bit" niche. Yes, there are a few things that could potentially be built out, but it's not totally necessary. It's a 3D Open-World "Beat-em-up" type with a fun transformation/fast travel mechanic. I haven't beaten it yet, but I'm already hoping for a sequel at some point. Everspace was like this, and then Everspace 2 came out and WOW did they build their world and lore out. I'd love to see the same done here. Keep this one out there, and let us have a continuation so we can learn more about what we've been given here. Or maybe give us a LITTLE expansion for some story and to whet our appetites for more of this world, but I would save a "Deep Dive" for lore and the myth for a larger title in the future. Overall, I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a quick sprint for late nights before bed, or any other limited sessions. It works like Black Desert. Pick it up and put it down easily without worrying about trying to remember "what was I doing?"
The game is good in terms of graphics and locations, but the gameplay could have been much better with a storyline and interesting quests.
Ravenbound isn’t technically broken in any way, its design is just fundamentally flawed on multiple levels. It’s an open world rogue-like where you’re punished for exploration and every weapon class plays the exact same. Almost every enemy type is some variant of bipedal humanoid and all the bosses are the same things with different weapons. You have zero freedom as to how to tackle each run and once you’ve beaten the game there’s NO incentive to play it again. There’s also zero characters or story or any sort of atmosphere of any kind. Just bland on bland. To its credit tho the combat is functional and there are a lot of decent synergies when making builds, something a lot of rogue-likes get wrong. If you pick it up on sale you might have 5ish hours of fun but the cracks start to show REALLY quickly.
Really bad designed game. I am unsure what the team's vision was on this game but makes no sense. The game punishes exploration, the "card" are garbage and most of the time you don't have mana nor gold. The camera and controls are awful which makes the experience even worse. I assume the goal is dying and unlocking the skill tree? 2/10 game overall
Ravenbound ------------------------ Ravenbound is one of those games that's way more interesting than its review score makes it look. The whole idea of mixing an open world with a roguelite is honestly kind of genius, and flying around the map as a raven never stopped being the part I looked forward to most. It doesn't always stick the landing though. The world is nice to look at, but after a while you realize you're doing the same fights and objectives over and over. It gets repetitive faster than I hoped. Combat is fun once you get used to it, and putting builds together kept me coming back for a few more runs than I expected. It definitely feels like a game with big ideas that just needed more time to flesh everything out. If you can look past the rough edges, there's a genuinely fun game here that's doing something different instead of playing it safe. I'd say grab it on sale, go in with reasonable expectations, and you'll probably have a better time than the reviews suggest. Enjoy the game.
While the game doesn't really let you explore and spend more time in the open world as I'd like, as a fast-paced roguelite fighter, this is a great game!
Combat is fun and crunchy, graphics are nice, but everything else is just so frustrating.
