$60 for the same game over and over is just ridiculous.
I have enjoyed the combat mission games over the years but i just picked this up in the Steam sale and they had removed a lot of the missions so that i had basically got a hollowed out game. I was so pissed off that this is the first game i have ever refunded on steam.
I recommend all Combat Mission games, since they fill perfectly their niche in the military simulation universe. I now own all titles and most DLCs from the year 2000 onwards, with the sole exception of Cold War. Sadly full fluidity of gameplay and UI has decreased over time due to some technical outdatedness, more so with bigger, battalion sized battles. Still the game is playable. If you think your dedicated GPU is not being used by Win11 for Combat Mission, try: Windows Settings>Display>Graphics and under Custom options for apps, manually add the game to tell the OS to use your best GPU when playing. It worked for me. Make sure to take advantage of bundles and special discounts when available.
Disclaimer: all "Combat Mission" titles are basically the same, just featuring different times and campaigns of WW2 or the modern era, so this applies to all of them. This game is hardcore. I am a military history nerd for 30 years and I know no other simulator that shows WW2 combat as realistic as this... Next to "Garviteam Tactics". They are so different that they complement each other, not compete against each other. You need to know real military combat tactics to prevail, nothing less. You need to know the weapons capabilities and limitations. If you don't you lose. If you make the effort, you get a very unique experience. All of a sudden, you really, really understand what it meant to be a WW2 soldier. You can relive history! I play this game for over 10 years (outside of Steam) and it just never gets old. About the crappy graphics and performance: this isn't a game! It never was and never will be. So gaming norms like eye-candy graphics and such don't apply. This is a simulator with just one goal: it wants to represent WW2 as realistic as possible. It exceeds at that. Special Bonus of the "Downfall" DLC - it features a battle that took place just 25 km from where I live in Northern Germany. The map is so precise, I can identify landmarks I know from being there!
wow, everything is bad. Graphics are so bad. like 2002 Close Combat bad.
Clunky and old, but nothing much else quite like it.
One of the best games ever made and possibly the best war simulator ever. Advanced Squad Leader on the PC. All of the Combat Mission games are great! Now, if you like AAA games you should look elsewhere, this is a detailed squad level simulator of real combat with outdated graphics and a clunky interface (but you do get used to it) but once you are in the game you wont even notice those "bad" graphics or the old UI. Seeing a potato masher dropping from the second floor onto your assault troops will beat any event a AAA game can generate! Not for the weak hearted, the game really shows the true nature of war ... theres a lot of mayhem no matter what you do. The learning curve is quite big, but not as bad as reading an old hex game manual. And remember that real combat tactics from WW2 army manuals, like fire and manouver are necessary to "beat" the game, although I don't think beating a scenario is really the thing here. This is definitely more of an exploration of combat and its deadly nature. Its more of a simulator than a game. Is it worth the price tag? For a wargamer definitely, for all others maybe ... its cheap for what it delivers but you will not feel this way unless you devote many hours to learning and enjoying it. A foot wide and a mile deep is how I would describe it.
I've had to play this for one of my university classes. Though it is historically accurate, and I see the value in the game, the game mechanics are of the worst I've ever played. I would not recommend this game to anyone.
Fegelein's counter attack
They really got the nerve to publish this? The resolution is maxed at 1280x1024 and the interface is so sluggish it's unplayable. I find no words for this mess. The pricing is ridiculous. Bought this via reseller, paid 5 EUs. And still that's too much for a game you actually can't play. edit: Fanatical refunded me. Really appreciated!
