most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane thing I have ever played.
First Impressions : ✅ SteamOS: Works out of the box. ✅ Gameplay ✅ Level design and events ❌ Characters design and story ❌Unreal Engine 5 (xxx heavier than BombRush Cyberfunk) I will edit this review after playing more.
Feels like long-lost media from a bygone era in all the best ways, like a Dreamcast deep-cut. Equal parts Jet Set, Tony Hawk, Sonic Adventure/Heroes, a bit of Viewtiful Joe, but still with a style it's own. Def recc
This came out of nowhere and absolutely rocked my ♥♥♥♥. Love it.
Ein wirklich tolles Spiel. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass man Parkour so umsetzen kann.
I like trains.
I saw a song off the soundtrack and purchased the game based on that. This game successfully combines a myriad of different game mechanics in ways I don't understand and cannot explain without just plainly comparing it to other games. It's a load of fun, and slowly drip feeds you new mechanics as you play, and appears to have a lot of content still left to go for me to get through. The game is an arcadey, level based game with core gameplay somewhat reminiscent of modern sonic levels, particularly something like generations or unleashed. It is very heavily inspired by games like Tony Hawk and Jet Set as well, with a lot of missions being based around building combo and score. Somehow, despite all this, the boss fights may be the best part of the game. It also has a good amount of exploration and collectibles. The game is set in japan and has a kind of mishmash of japanese as well as generally well understood indie culture (Zines are a big part of the game, for example.) A lot of the narrative is evergreen and pretty easy to understand without being immersed in weeb lore. It has a surprising amount of story for what it is, and it's all competently told, and the story beats change per chapter so it doesn't feel entirely like a cookie cutter "go to place, beat x, x joins you" story. The game has a lot of very nice art and effects. The game has a lot of fun character designs and the story is surprisingly engaging for being the funny train Tony Hawk game. The visuals are nice and the locales are varied, but also very busy, so it can be easy to lose track with all the effects and miss based on a split second decision. This isn't that frustrating because the checkpointing is VERY generous, but you almost certainly aren't gonna get a gold medal your first time through the level without learning it. On the surface the game looks very simplistic but it stacks mechanics very nicely and tutorializes them well, so after every level you feel a little more competent than the last. There are modes I like more than others but the fact this game has the variety of levels and content it has is kind of miraculous. The levels can be long and winding and there are a million little paths you can take and it opens up more and more as it goes on. The music, the reason I bought it, is incredible. It's consistently very well done with an all star cast which I'm not certain how they got all on board with it. It isn't just the odd famous composer, it has a bunch of them, proper bands that do proper shows, and in house composers for other companies. Every stage has a new theme so far, and they've all been pretty good. I won't spoil any particulars because there really are a lot of surprises, but Tee Lopes is the main composer and that alone is enough to guarantee a pretty good soundtrack. It feels like it tackles a lot of genres and styles that you may not expect a game this inspired by jet set radio to do. The voice acting is all very good, I know very little about the voice actors' other roles but I know a couple of them this is their first acting role and I honestly can't tell. The only real negatives I have is sometimes on respawn my inertia is saved and I go flying off, delaying my respawn for another couple seconds. I also feel like I miss some rails I hit and sometimes clip through ramps and things during the mechanically encouraged risky dodges. Overall, very good. It kind of gives me a headache after a bit, but what can you do.
Someone made one of my dream games again
This game gets it right. I love it so much. The levels are so unique and interesting and there’s so many paths to go in most. Loved every second of this game.
This game is astonishingly fun. It brings me back to my childhood playing games like Jet Grind Radio, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Ape Escape, Megaman Legends, and more. The visuals, the vibe, the music, and the frantic gameplay all coalesce into something truly special. It's so fun that I am almost scared to play more because I don't want the experience to end. That said, I do have two minor criticisms. 1) This game seems to be lacking much in terms of fail states, at least early on. I have performed terribly on some stages and it doesn't usually seem to matter. I will finish with a bad score, but the game let's me continue. I hope as I continue there will be levels that require me to beat it in a certain time and levels that require certain scores to progress. I know I can replay them to get higher medals and what not, but that all feels ancillary to the core experience. 2) I wish there was a reason in the levels to both go fast AND achieve a high score. At the moment it looks like I can just focus one run on going fast and get the corresponding gold medal, and then do the level again and focus on getting a high score - going slow as to not mess up my point multiplier. Honestly, this game is at its best when I am trying to go fast AND shooting for a high score, but so far it seems like there's no reason to really engage with the game in that way. I will continue to do so, as it's incredibly fun, but there doesn't seem to really be any reason to. All in all, I give this game my highest recommendations. Easily my GOTY so far, a 9/10 at worst but I could see this becoming one of my favorite games of all time, if I'm being honest.
