Demon Turf is the best kind of 3D platformer, one that is simple to pick up and play, but once you start to delve into its intricacies you see just how deep the movement system really is. If you like deep, tight platforming experiences with a huge amount of content to dig into, Demon Turf is exactly what you’re looking for. You play as Beebz, a bratty demon girl with ambitions of becoming the Demon Queen. In order to usurp the current Demon King, you must travel to the strongholds of his various lieutenants and best them in combat, although to even get an audience with them, you’ll need to complete various platforming levels, each with a unique mechanical theme to keep things varied throughout your playtime. The story is simple, mostly acting as a bridge between platforming levels, but I found the main cast to be charming all the same. Each level has a battery at the end, which you need to unlock the boss fight, but there’s also additional collectibles in each level, which you use as currency to unlock cosmetic rewards or modifiers to your abilities. The real joy of the game is the platforming itself. You have so many options available to you, it's a bit crazy. I can’t go into much detail here, or else the review would be three times the length, but between the wall jumps, backflips, hover techniques, long jumps, and the combinations of all of the above, you have plenty to sink your teeth into. But this isn’t just a high skill ceiling game, the skill floor is quite low as well, making it easy to get into. It honestly reminds me of the 3D Mario games, the basic moves allow anyone to play, but with a huge amount of depth for those who wish to push themselves further. And once you’ve beaten the boss of each region, you unlock remixed versions of each level in the zone showing Beebz in charge, absolutely none of which are merely the same level but tougher, but new challenges that often explore the new move you would have acquired. And then you have all the bonus content to make your way through, such as combat arena’s, platforming challenges, a ball pushing minigame, and a photography challenge. And THEN you have the two free expansions to the game; Demon Turf: Neon Splash is a pure platforming experience through a surreal, vaporwave world unique to it, and Demon Turf: Tower, where you are trapped in an imposing tower and must push your platforming skills to the limit. You are certainly not going to be short on stuff to do. Visually, it has an interesting mix of 2D character sprites and 3D environments. It might look a bit strange at first, with the mix of art styles, but I can assure you that the game feels great to play. The art style is charming, with each zone having its own theme and distinct colour palette, and the soundtrack is equally unique. I can’t think of any other game which, for example, mixes cybernetic synth with Tibetan mountain chanting. Demon Turf is a unique looking, highly accessible, and deeply engaging platforming game with a huge amount of content behind it. Whether you are a platforming pro or a new arrival to the genre, I cannot recommend Demon Turf enough.
Most of the game is very fun, but the final levels (mountain remix and right before the demon king) are so terrible in its design its borderline unplayable
It's a good platformer. It's nice to see how much Demon Tides improved over the original.
This game is great!
This a very challenging, rewarding, if not, slightly flawed platformer that gives players a true test of challenge in their skills. Demon's Turf has everything you need from a game that's heavily inspired from platformers of the past, (the developers REALLY loved the 3D Mario games) main character with a cute edgy attitude, tons of levels to run around in, and a cast of fun characters that's easy to follow! The visuals and overall atmosphere gives me Newgrounds vibes, which makes me feel nostalgic and old haha As a veteran player and someone who's played a lot of platformers both 2D and 3D, this was a very great challenge that offers plenty to do to keep you going for past 30+ hours. Your base move-set needs to be mastered ASAP as this game will push you to not only get better, but adapt to the tougher levels ahead of you. Levels have plenty to discover and conquer that makes even the later revisits just as challenging and entertaining. There's also plenty of content to complete like photo hunting, time trials, collectables, and more! With plenty to keep you busy, it's def worth the purchase as this also includes the standalone expansion Neon Splash and PC exclusive Demon Tower as well! This was close to being one of my favorites in the genre, but unfortunately, the game is held back by some minor and major glaring flaws. As stated by almost everyone who's played the game, the combat is the biggest detractor, as there will be plenty of times where you have to defeat all enemies to progress and it sadly never gets any better despite the new abilities you get later on. I appreciate that it doesn't have some unnecessary combo system or enemies with health, but you wish there was a way to skip them especially when going after those time trials. With the exception of the third and fourth boss, they're okay at best but they feel more like combat arenas rather than putting your maneuvers to the test. The abilities you get from each boss all have a major flaw ranging from camera issues with the hook-shot, or the late stop watch that selectively pauses obstacles and is situational at best. Finally, the minimum amount of batteries (main collectable to reach the final boss) requires you to finish almost every level to beat the game. The game will remind you to beat the altered stages for more of them, but on a casual run this is a very demanding task for those looking to just play it normally and try to reach the end. Despite all the issues, this was a very fun game that I was happy to complete and push myself to full completion! For me as a seasoned fan of the genre, this is right up my alley as for everyone else who really loves this type of fast and acrobatic maneuvering that will test you to get better every level! For casual players however, while I do recommend it, just be warned that this will require above average effort to get into and will definitely not be for everyone, but if your up to the challenge then you got a really rad game here!
8.5/10. 3D platformer that's got a really cute and unique sense of style. Love the soundtrack, love the art direction. The gameplay is *solid* (if a bit finnicky at times with some of the spinoff mechanics like the purple walls that you cling to) and the maps are pretty well designed, with the compass for secret-finding being a highlight that removed a lot of the typical frustration from collect-a-thons.
Little demon leaps Every rooftop sparks with style Chaos crowns the climb
Neon Splash.
good game :)
Really solid feel, floaty in the best way possible. I've nearly completed the game, can't wait to do the same to the new one here soon; I absolutely adore this game! If you love platformers and collectathons, then don't even hesitate, this game does it just as good as the big dogs in my opinion.
