Demon Scrolls is the 9th game released by Wolfs Moon Studios and the first one utilizing 8-bit aesthetics. If you like any of Wolfs Moon Studios' other games and/or if you like classic old-school JRPGs with 8-bit aesthetics and made with RPG Maker (MV) in general - which is highly likely if you're reading this review -, you'll probably enjoy this game very much, since it provides dozens of hours of JRPG fun. As I wrote in my reviews regarding Wolfs Moon Studios' other games, their greatest strength is to provide an enjoyable process of getting stronger, including varied enemies that drop amazing loot. Outgrinding the challenge and decking your party with cool equipment has rarely been more fun. Battles - which are all random encounters except for the bosses - are the usual turn-based fare, and they can be challenging if you don't prepare for them or if you take them lightly, but even just moderate knowledge about JRPG mechanics should be sufficient to prevail over any foe in this game. As usual, there are a lot of (optional) locations to explore, which become gradually available as the player acquires more sophisticated traveling means (boat/ship and finally an airship). You won't be breathing in the wild or shedding tears for a kingdom, but the game, in this sense linked to its predecessors, features excellent exploration incentives that will boost any JRPG adventurer's motivation. Similar to the usual strengths, the corresponding weaknesses can be seen here, too. Story and dialogue are (only) serviceable, which can be justified due to the Dragon Warrior/Quest style this time (at least there is a story this time in contrast to the developer's 8th game "The Grindstone", but other games made by the developer - like "Angel Made" or "Seventh Star" - lay a much greater focus on the story). Mapping and dungeon design, that once again contain a few mostly unedited sample maps, are tolerable. While these aspects won't blow your mind, it must be stated that the game's strengths more than make up for its weaknesses. Despite the Dragon Warrior/Quest-esque appearance, modern amenities of RPG Maker (MV) software and some of Wolf Moon Studios' trademarks still make an appearance, like the opportunity to save the game anytime and anywhere, an item limit of 999 and skills that can be leveled up through usage in battle. On the other hand, contrary to its predecessors, the game does without a Veteran Experience system (i.e. no earning another EXP currency to spend on passive skills and stat boots), but I can easily see how this system wouldn't have been a good fit (stylistically and mechanically) this time. In conclusion, if you're part of the target audience (which is very likely the case for those who read through this whole review), give this game a try. It gets a full recommendation from me because of its strengths and despite its weaknesses.

I’m not fond of the graphics – but don’t let that put you off! I thoroughly enjoyed the game. I took 24 hours to complete it (the 25.5 shown includes a chunk of non-playing time when RL intruded) – I think I found everywhere worth visiting, but a world map would have been welcome. I love the drop rates of healing items and decent gear, but the miss rate felt a bit high. There was no real need to grind, but a bit to get plenty of good items was worth doing, especially in the early stages.
A little over five hours into this game and I already love it. Highly recommend for those that love the older Dragon Warriors or Final Fantasys.
Enjoyed the game. Very basic old school but good for its genre. There is a lot of grinding necessary to win the battles to get the best gear. And the best gear is necessary (in my view) to finish the game.
Ah, Demon Scrolls, a game that's like a warm, nostalgic hug from the video games of your youth! Remember the good ol' days of the '90s, when game characters had big pixels and even bigger personalities? Well, get ready to be whisked away on a hilarious time machine, because Demon Scrolls brings that nostalgic essence as if a master wizard summoned the past. From the moment you launch the game, you'll be transported back to your childhood, sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of your CRT TV, fingers eagerly clutching a chunky controller. The pixelated graphics in Demon Scrolls evoke the same sense of wonder and pixel-art charm that graced the screens of those bygone days. It's like a time capsule opened up, revealing all the quirkiness and simplicity that made those games so endearing. The game's protagonist, Wayland, embodies the spirit of those iconic characters from the '90s. He's a lovable underdog, unsure of himself but thrust into a world of magical chaos. Wayland is the kind of character you can't help but root for, as he stumbles through his quest. The dialog is as always entertaining, which is something you've come to expect from Wolfs Moon Studios. Demon Scrolls is a delightful throwback to the goofy games of your youth. It captures the essence of the '90s gaming era with pixelated graphics, lovable characters, and a touch of that old-school challenge. If you're longing for a dose of nostalgia and a good laugh, grab a copy, take a trip down memory lane, and let Demon Scrolls whisk you away to a simpler time filled with pixelated wonders. Just be prepared to be charmed, amused, and overwhelmed by a wave of warm and fuzzy childhood memories. Kudos to Wolfs Moon Studios for their continued focus on creating likable and relatable characters. They've come a long way from some questionable character choices in the past (cough Daniel cough). It's refreshing to see their growth and improvement in character creation. Excellent job, Wolfs Moon Studios! You've captured my heart... and my soul!
The old school graphics worked fantastically as the game itself is another outstanding rpg by Wolfs Moon. The challenge, fun factor, creatures, combat, length of playtime, and huge quantity of items, weapons, and armor are just few of the great features of this well made rpg. The story, gameplay, and good number of characters (with their unique skills and magic) is addictive and enjoyable, Plenty of places and islands to explore outside of the main story quest and getting an airship is a bonus. Super highly recommended.
This is another great game from this developer, I definitely recommend it to all rpg lovers.
super jeux a ne pas manquer d acheter il en vaut la peine comme tous les autres jeux du meme genre
another awesome game from wolfs moon studios. I love the old school style of the game. You get plenty of items in drops which is always a plus, its just the right difficulty, not too easy and not frustratingly hard. The story line is good and is definitely a game you will sit down to play and hours will go by before you realize it. This developer always puts his heart and soul in all his games, this one does not disappoint. It is a nice escape to sit down and play a game that reminds you of games you played years ago.
Just beat the game. It was like playing a game from the past in all the ways. You have party members to choose and level/gear up. I would say this game emphasized strategy and tactics over story, There was a small story but it never got in the way. Honestly it was a blast to play through. If you are into old RPGs, I would recommend picking this one up
