About

Democracy 3 is the work of a single developer, Cliff Harris from the UK, an indie games veteran who has been making games since 1997 and programming since he was 11 years old. Cliff gets some 'help' from his cats, but frankly not much...Sums Steam only; GOG publishes no volume signal, so the true total is higher by an unknown amount.

I haven't ever actually been able to survive to a General Election without getting assassinated by Capitalists. 10/10 for realism
Can't wait to get assassinated by a cabal of wealthy Australian capitalists after making prostitution illegal all over again. My fault clearly; I interfered with their ability to "make it rain". 10/10 reality simulator.

Democracy 3 is a unique political simulation game that offers an in-depth look at running a country. The game stands out for its complex systems and the ability to tweak countless policies, making it a fascinating experience for anyone interested in politics and governance. The simulation allows you to experiment with different strategies and witness the consequences of your decisions, providing a compelling sandbox for political enthusiasts. However, the game is not without its flaws. One of the most significant issues is its apparent bias towards certain political ideologies. The game's mechanics often seem to favor more progressive or liberal policies, making it challenging to successfully govern with conservative or libertarian approaches. This bias can detract from the game's realism and immersion, as it feels like some political outcomes are predetermined or overly simplified. Additionally, the game's interface can be overwhelming, and the feedback from the simulation isn't always clear or consistent, making it difficult to fully understand the impact of your decisions. The complexity, while a strength in many ways, can also be a barrier for players trying to engage with the game without extensive trial and error. Despite these issues, Democracy 3 remains a valuable experience for those interested in political simulations. Its depth and the ability to experiment with different policies make it a standout title in the genre. However, potential players should be aware of its biases and the steep learning curve. In conclusion, while Democracy 3 offers a unique and engaging experience, it is also marred by significant flaws. It is worth playing for its educational value and the novelty of its simulation, but be prepared for a potentially frustrating experience due to its ideological slant and complex mechanics.
Completely unstable even after all these years
Been a while since I played but as I recall the biggest annoyance was the huge number of fundamental disagreements with the game mechanics. Not "X is bad and Y good this game is biased" problems; I'm a gamer, I don't care if a shotgun is useless past 4 meters, do whatever you want to make an interesting game. I mean when I consider the primary purpose of a policy, regardless of the downsides, is to accomplish X, and the main penalty in-game is NEGATIVE X. There's so many examples of results that defy both intuition and modern economics and political science, that the labels are worse than meaningless, because they mislead and confuse. In other words, this would be a superior game if it played identically but were an abstract game about numbers and colors and shapes instead of voting blocs and political issues.
Game has a liberal bias in political theory. its worth playing on someone else's computer like once just to play the game. the game isn't very comprehensive in simulating beliefs, ideologies, and lacks an understanding of actual events in history that the game should have used as a basis to designing the game. it doesn't account for the different governing systems of each country, only an arbitrary direct democracy and has no bearing on Republican systems and representation. if you are playing the game as just a game then best of luck to you.
I will recommend this game to people who enjoy political simulators, I do not think it is worth $25 though as while enjoyable it gets repetitive if you do not deviate from the social capitalist stance, just go ahead, and plunge yourself into an authoritarian state, a narco-state, military state, a socialist utopia, outlaw class, outlaw businesses, outlaw living~ oops got a bit carried away there, Anyways I would recommend getting this during a sale or something.
