I leave a positive review for this game but there is a lot to improve on it. Somewhat unsatisfactory graphics. There is no music in many areas and this creates "boredom". Zones that were put in just to stretch out the game a bit but all the same... In short, a lot of untapped potential. 6/10 to take with discounts
I stumbled on this by pure accident, completely unaware of the emotional rollercoaster it would take me on. The game was purchased on a whim, it was on sale at barely 1,50€, i decided to buy it without even thinking since I love deers and love Bambi, I don't even like walking sims yet here I am to tell you something: The sheer simplicity of its design must not be taken lightly, despite being "just" a walking simulator it provoked more emotions in me within 60 minutes of gameplay than most media has done for the past 5 years. Each chapter with its own purpose, never overstating its welcome, never being too long or too short, going straight to the point without the use of words and pure environmental story-telling. I could tell you more but it's really not worth it to spoil what you are going to see in this game, even the use of steam achievemnts to solidify what you "chose to be" first has done more than what Undertale provoked years ago with the cheap and forced Toriel death. Trust me, I do not review games often, I do not get impressed easily but I do not take emotions lightly.. I can just tell you that this game is a pure gem and I wish more people would get in touch with their own feelings to the point that they would give this very simplistic yet humble piece of software an honest chance. Play it, just do it, don't look up anything, you'll waste the price of a candy at worst....but you might gain something you couldn't have ever imagined.
What the... No, really, I'm sorry, but what was that? Soo many questions... Do they really cast the deer out because it's an albino or is it because it's not able to move correctly? (Oh no, 15° ascent, consider that way blocked.) And what Hakuna-Mata-stuff happened in the "cave of manhood"? How long did the deer stumble through the dark to leave it as a full fleshed out alpha male that can't eat anymore and thus leaves his hunger and frustration out on innocent fawns? (At least you get an achievement for that cold blooded murder...). And what's the point in the final journey to the top of the mountain after it met other deers? Did they make it regret it's choices so it prepares to jump to death? Or did ist just lay down to finally rest and close it's eyes forever so the final drone-flight is it's soul leaving the body? And if so, why do we skip the "cave of manhood" again!? Is it because of the stuff that happened in there? Long story short: I'm sorry but consider the "without dialogue or literal narration"-experiment failed.
This game really makes me want to be able to recommend it, but its flaws are simply too severe. I don't believe spoilers will greatly affect anyone's experience, but they are ahead. If you need a TL;DR, this game has some beautiful artistic moments but technical laziness and 'loose screws' for a lack of a better word damage those moments severely. Even if you enjoy walking sim games, you may want to pass this one up. Walking sim type games like this tend to be rather stigmatized, especially one that's so short for $6, so I want to be clear that neither of those are problems for me. Virginia, Paratopic, What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home--these are good games. I like all of those games. And, a game that lasts 30 minutes but that i think about for days is worth much more than one I play for 30 hours and forget about by lunch break. So I want to be clear that neither of those aspects are what I'm judging. This game has some very effective and powerful moments, but lazy technical work hampers its ability to use interactivity to convey its message. Right off the bat, the player character animations feel floaty, robotic, and not natural at all--for many people that's a death knell by itself. The animation of a deer walking or prancing in the woods, an animation we will be seeing the whole game, should definitely have more work put into it. When your game minimizes mechanics to focus on visuals, those visuals need to work. My first playthrough only lasted a few minutes entirely because of how bad that animation was, but I tried again after seeing some reviews and seeing the game was fairly short. (Again, not necessarily a bad thing! I wouldn't have continued playing a longer game, and would probably have just refunded it here.) The second time, after the field with the hostile bucks, I tried cutting across a field and ignoring the path. Cuz, y'know, I'm a deer, not a backpacker, and it was clear that it wasn't friendly territory. Somehow I not only met an invisible wall--one that really didn't need to be there--but seemed to be trapped in a triangle of them. So I quit and reloaded from checkpoint. That's not just a bad technical choice, but a bad design one--the developer clearly wanted to make sure the player knew the bucks were hostile in case they didn't stop to eat berries, so they funneled you into the more or less forced interaction with the buck that chases you out of the level. Either let me miss things, or make those barriers visible and obvious. Put a cliffside there or some reason a deer wouldn't be able to progress. Third time was the charm and I was able to complete the game, but that's already a bad first impression and a bad second impression after I changed my mind. Then, after a scene where you're supposed to follow a swarm of fireflies, the swarm will move a certain distance, stop, and then "turn around" in a very bizarrely video gamey way where all the fireflies turn in perfect, mechanical harmony. Visual hiccups like that, again, hurt many times worse when the game is a very short and primarily visual experience. With all those things said, there are some moments that hit pretty hard. When the fireflies no longer had to act on game mechanics and could instead simply be part of a cutscene where the fawn fell asleep, it was beautiful and touching and gave this sense of momentary but beautiful shelter in the midst of hostility. The memory/dream sequence could have been a little less hammy to start out with, but it still hit pretty damn well, especially at the end. But notably, these scenes are still surrounded by small failures of technique. The 'moral choice' afterwards seemed a little unfair, since flashing "press right click to attack" on the screen and removing the feeding mechanic looks like a tutorialized mechanic, which most players will engage in automatically. I guess the developer thought the same and made the first two targets fawns/does so you might think twice before attacking them, and I did--but that also makes it not much of a choice. If our character at this point were an especially strong buck and could exact revenge on the ones who attacked him, that might be more of a decision. If the berries mechanic didn't feel completely artificial (there was no player feedback whatsoever for eating them) then the fact that there were only two small brushes of berries, followed by a giant field of them later, might have made me feel pretty good about choosing not to attack, even given the previous issues I mentioned. But the "better than them" achievement honestly felt hollow given those issues. With a bit more care and time to work out its kinks, this could have been a really good experience. Deer are very important creatures to me if you couldn't tell by my name and avatar. They were very common where I grew up and I feel deep spiritual connection with them even today. So I think I was probably the ideal 'target audience' for something like this. If I'm even feeling conflicted about it, I think most people are going to bounce off. I hope the developer reads this review and makes something similar with a little more technique and precision, because I do like what they tried to make here. But that's the thing--I like what they TRIED to make. What I actually played was, well...disappointing. Sorry. There is some real heart here but I struggle to say it was made with love.
Going into this game I didn't expect to be brutally murdered and crushed by rocks and getting hit by thunder, and I wasn't too happy to find it out the way I did :/ (by being murdered and getting crushed and then hit by thunder). The friendly little fireflies and the ending made up for the brutal parts though. ♥ I kept trying to go for little adventures and got stuck/out of bounds plenty of times and had to reload. Luckily there was many checkpoints! I also missed The Choice of not/killing the fawn in the first round and just got the first achievement free lol. Had to go back to see where it even was, so it was very nice there was a chance to skip levels as well. When there was light there was so much light and when it was dark it was so very dark. All in all I had a good run.
You walk forward 5 times and the game is over. The ability to eat and attack is pointless, you can get through the entire game without ever needing to use them. What is the point of this game? Where is the Journey from Deer Journey? Why Deer specifically anyway? Was the deer model discounted in the asset store? This could have been *insert random animal* Journey and it wouldn't have made a difference.
Ok, guess what, i am biased, so i stick with "recommend" but if there would be a neutral option i'd have to go with it. You can see that the Creator(s) was inspired by "The First Tree", because a) it's in the description, b) it feels exactly like it, but even less substantial. So what you get here is a Walking Simulator, of the subcategory "Artsy Piano Music"-Type. And I don't mean that in a bad way, as much as it sounds like that. It checks all the boxes, nearly no Story to it, you basically really just walk, no collectibles here. The Story is very bare bones. You really have to like that particular featured animal, i liked the last-tree-Fox, or course i like Deer (durr). Just don't expect a lot of it. And my only real critic ist that, Spoiler altert,
most of these type of games have to push the "someone dies" Button
, which i think is a too simple solution to try to push some emotion buttons, come on there really are better ways. Also some technical things: -No Mouse / Controller Y-Axis invert - BOO! -Resolution didn't go higher than 1080p (on a 4k Screen) -Runs horrible on the Steam Deck, which wouldn't be so bad if the game wouldn't be ideal for an on the go system. And the grafics, while not bad, are really not -THAT- much of a reason to run that bad. -again, no vertical Invert for the view! TL:DR: You run around as a deer and that's kinda it.
Deer Simulator is a delightful walking simulator, while it is a short game, it is a wonderful journey. It's more of an experience than a game as there is not to interact with but it is a lovely story for nature lovers who just want a short game to enjoy.
