Easily one of the worst dungeon crawlers of the era. Everything this game can do wrong, it does wrong. Aside from some cool artwork, there is nothing redeeming about this title. Skip it and play EOTB, Ravenloft or any other more competent SSI game. Its not worth the headache.
DeathKeep aus dem Jahr 1995 bietet spaßige Dungeon-Crawl-Action in klassischer D&D-Manier. Natürlich ist es technisch veraltet, macht aber trotz allem immer noch richtig Laune. Klare Empfehlung!
DeathKeep is an ancient game from 1995. It's a whopping 28 years old at the time of this review. The game runs in DOSBOX and lacks proper widescreen aspect ratio support (it's locked at 4:3) or support for any modern gaming display resolutions, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. This is a very ancient attempt at making a first person action RPG using a loose interpretation of 2D Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Very loosely. And it's a mess... remembering in 1995 we already had games like DooM, this looks worse and plays far, far worse, with clunky controls (SSI just discovered the mouse, wanted to use it in a game, but had completely no idea what to do with it) and framerates through the floor. Heck, basic gameplay is worse than Wolf3D from 5 years previous, so there's no excuse for the poor quality even back then, let alone now. You only get three characters to chose from, Fighter, Mage, or Fighter-Mage, no Clerics, Thieves, Rangers, Paladins... a bizarre choice of characters considering the strength of D&D is the wide variety of playstyles that gamers should be able to choose from. It just doesn't "work" as an RPG, and as an action game, it's even worse. DeathKeep is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $6 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again.
https://youtu.be/4aJHZ0gvBbo Nearly impossible to control with the first level being a slippery ice cave with health draining water is just a rough way to start any game.
Old-school AD&D Second Edition game. Decent for its time, and not a bad nostalgia run.
unable to play currently my character just floats in the air and some controls such as attacking seem to stop working for no reason, I really hope this gets patched. running on windows 11
You're right, this is it, that dungeon crawler you used to play as а kid! Added a number of improvements such as a minimap and full mouse support, the game runs great on modern PCs. How nice it is to travel back in time and experience these emotions again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2v2P-sbIuo
And don't forget to Subscribe to my Youtube

Join my Steam Group
This might not be the strongest dungeon crawler of its time - its mechanics are shallow and character building is practically nonexistent - but everything else about it oozes charm. From the moody '90s graphics and cozy visual style to the entertaining voice acting and atmospheric intro, it has a personality that’s hard to ignore. It’s not perfect, but if you want a dose of mid-’90s D&D weirdness with a vibe all its own, DeathKeep delivers in that regard.
This is actually one of my favorite childhood games but I had the 3DO version and this versions controls are complete trash and only slightly changeable. No controller support whatsoever. Im keeping it for the nostalgia and hope they update it.
I like mazes, and this game has lots of mazes.
