Got bored very quick. There no depth and very repeative gameplay. Due simple graphic every level and enemy looks the same. Maybe game reveales and catch attention later, but i feel dissapointed at this point.
"The bip went boop and the bzzch." Deadnaut: Signal Lost strives to convey atmosphere through limited means. It puts its player in the seat of a distant commander figure in control of a Deadnaut, a poor as-good-as-dead soul that gets sent on near-suicide missions for reasons I didn't quite catch. You watch your screen and see a dot representing your character, you hear sounds muffled and distant as if relayed through a microphone inside their suit somewhere far away, though some sounds seem to come in strangely clear, so I have no idea what the game is trying to convey here. Story is given in random tidbits gleaned from log entries that I quickly stopped reading, as they all seemed disjointed and unrelated to one another, possibly due to randomization. There are cool screens and gadgets and buttons and you can't do much with any of them, so the areas where the game manages to look nice feel utterly wasted. Or perhaps I was just spoiled too much by Carrier Command 2 and Highfleet... What the game actually is, in the end, is a fairly slow, repetitive and frustrating roguelike with the traditional grid based movement, randomly generated levels and unforgiving permadeath mechanics. Explaining its mechanics or making them easy to grasp through gameplay is not a strong suite of the game, leaving it up to the player to read up on the tutorials to figure out what things are, and even after a couple of hours I felt like I was missing a lot of basics. Enemies spawn seemingly out of nowhere, often in droves. I found myself mashing a familiar button combo of E-E-Q-Q-Q-Q-E-E-Q-Q-Q-Q. Two presses of the E key to fire a shotgun, then four presses of the Q key to fire the pistol twice, repeat. Occasionally move away from enemies, and when you run out of enemies you get to walk through a very, VERY long corridor where nothing happens. The levels felt far too large, far too empty of content and far too soulless. Perhaps this is an attempt by the developers to convey a kind of space-y horror of great voids and distances, but it does not translate well to the gameplay experience. I quickly got a pretty bad feeling of this game and don't think I'll be picking it back up anytime soon. While the game boasts great customizability, I didn't really find it even on the runs where I managed to reach the first shop. The upgrade trees seemed uninteresting and the missions too samey to keep me interested. No aspect of the game really carries it anywhere, nothing really sets it apart or gives the player a reason to keep going. An accessible and streamlined roguelike with engrossing atmosphere and excellent systemic depth.
Edit: Continuing to try so i get some value out of my purchase. End Result DO NOT BUY. I repeat. DO NOT BUY. There is nothing of value so far to make any of the time spent to be worth any amount of money spent on this. Outdoor missions are still kill your run events even with shields to block it temporarily. You still take the effects, still take the maluses. Awful and broken design. The one saving grace this game has is you can CAD it an retry if you get a bad roll of fortune. Injectors are worthless. Even with the boost skills (of which you get 10). Enemies that would be needed to use an injector against are immune. 25% immunity for a basic ranged weapon wielding enemy, whom can hit you 19 out of 20 times if they see you, where their weakness with an injector by that point can only hit 10% chance vs the immunity effect. So its a negative % chance to happen. Great Design choice! ADAT/ADAR depending on room layouts can be you skip literal real life minutes waiting for them to move on. Very frustrating to sit and wait and do nothing. Original review below. The premise is good, the idea is good, but holy heck, outdoor missions if you dont have a very select and very pricey suit upgrade are run-ending matters. Given how common these are... I can't recommend with rogue-like style this game approaches with. Too late for refund by this point.
Fantastically immersive and goes to show how far sound design can carry simple concepts.
Tried my best to enjoy this game but it was a frustrating play. Most of the time there isn't much going on; you move your deadnaut from one room to the next. Occasionally you will find a corpse (which will gain you more knowledge, i.e. currency) and every now and then, maybe a blueprint (new gear) or a suit upgrade (new ability - most are kinda meh). You need to maintain focus throughout as the situation can go "belly up" very quickly. If RNG decides to screw you over, you may find your deadnaut surrounded by enemies and end up dying. If you hadn't yet found a cloning station by then, that's just too bad.. your game is over and you need to restart from zero. Hours of gameplay lost. I did these a few times and just gave up on it. I was waiting for the game to get more interesting but sadly, it didn't for me. I want to love it as the premise is interesting but sorry, this just isn't fun.
Went in expecting a one time game, now i'm trying to 100%.
Leaps and bounds better than the original Deadnaut, (also a good game.) High tension and atmosphere, but this time its much easier to understand. Screwfly games come out so rarely, but they are always such gems. Thanks for this guys.
!!!
Deeply atmospheric and immersive. I'd love to beat it some day!
