It is an interesting visual novel, but my problem is that the characters are not consistent in their "characters" (personality, driving force etc.) in all routes. Imo, John is all for justice and upholding the law in his route, and he is a shifty, lying bastard in Jed's. The killer is also a different person... And these are only the two routes I've played so far. If I can trust the guide, if you want to play Bill's route you have to unlock all the others first - but that would only make sense for me if you would get additional information of the characters and the situation in each route. But they are all different scenarios and the character motivations are just not checking out? I do not understand the justification behind this. But I really appreciate it that there is no sugar-coating in this visual novel about the issues of homosexuality back in those days. The reception was not pretty and I don't like when people lie about it or idealize it for the sake of entertainment. Not pretty, but more historically accurate than most of the similar stories I've read. Respect for this.
The art was a little deceptive but I tried the game anyway. The writing in this is really good, there wasn't a route where I wasn't choked up or sad. Some of the endings really were painful to get through. My poor sweet Jed for starters....
Overall, it's a great game. It's enjoyable to play, it has fun slang you can learn from the context or glossary, and every route reveals a new version of the story. Each route is its own reality that will only serve to endear you more to Lee Mccarthy. As others have said before, it's wonderful that he's got his own personality, and regardless of what route you choose, he takes action that will advance the story. The music adds to create an immersive atmosphere and the art is pretty. Not much more you can ask for. It's a good game, man (in the gender neutral sense). There is a small quibble if you're super attached to John Cartwright,
Jed's route has him act in ways that seem out of character. It is a different reality though, so as long as you keep in mind it's a different version of him, it's all good.
I absolutely loved every second of this game. Every character is well written and engaging, definitely worth the price.
I didn't really like the game at first I'll be honest. It changed after I started the second route. You really should play them all. It will change your perception of the game. I played through Taza, Hollis, Jed, John, ???, then the neutral route. Everyone should play at least a couple routes and the neutral route imo. You can see the story play out in interesting ways and get different perspectives. My favorite paths were good Hollis, good John, and good ???. Mind the warnings as they are pretty important. Also prepare for some hilarious language. I read the glossary a lot because I hadn't heard a lot of the words or phrases before. Overall, I was impressed with the way the narrative was handled in different routes. I wouldn't have been sad to see more content, but I was happy with what was presented. There's a decent romance scene for each romance. The CGs were nice. I got all the achievements and some of the bad paths are really sad. It still enjoyed seeing the differences though.
I don't usually play dating sims, but I made an exception for DMR because I love the gay cowboy premise. I will admit that I instapurchased simply because John Cartwright's mustache reminded me of Lee Van Cleef. I finally finished playing through all the endings, and I enjoyed the experience! There's a lot of great art, and some REALLY good emotional scenes. The dramatic writing in the routes for John, Jed, and (hidden route)
Bill
significantly exceeded my expectations. When the credits rolled after (hidden route)
Bill's good ending
, I literally stood up at my desk and gave it a standing ovation. Like WOW! My biggest gripe with this game is the lackluster indigenous representation. It doesn't feel like the writing+art teams put ANY research into their depictions of the native character(s). The tribe in the game is only ever referred to as "the Native American tribe"-- not Navajo, Cheyenne, Lakota, Apache, etc-- it's just an amalgamated stereotype. Taza, the only native character with a name and a speaking role, has pale skin and gold eyes. I suspect his name choice and outfit design were made up without sufficient research. Speaking of names! Although the "Chief" plays a minor role in multiple routes, he's never given an actual name. Meanwhile, minor characters with similar/lesser levels of story importance like Devin, Slim, Miss Belle, Howard Baxter, One-Thumb Tony, and Doctor Renley are all given names. The nameless "Chief" and the rest of his "Native American tribe" are handled carelessly. I appreciate the writer's attempt to develop Taza's personality. And I will concede that Taza's route has some cute romantic scenes. And the writer certainly tries to tackle anti-indigenous racism. But the lack of authenticity is very off-putting. Feels like this "representation" was created by a team that has only ever seen Disney's Pocahontas. Overall, I would still recommend playing this because it had other more interesting routes. But if you only intend to do one or two playthroughs, avoid Taza.
I underestimated this game; it is 100% definitely worth it for me, but it may not be the same for everyone, but it was worth buying. I definitely underestimated how much I was going to enjoy this. I truly hope if given a chance, I would love to see a second one of Dead Man's Rest; it is absolutely amazing!
