Abandoned in the wild with only minimal equipment, you'll undertake a survivor's arduous way of life, and embark on a journey though toxic sewers, abandoned hospitals, deserted cities and more locales. Despite the relative freshness of atomic doomsday, somehow the planet readily sprung back to life: verdant forests teeming with wildlife sounds, fields of grass and flowers blooming won't be uncommon sights... they should be. The apocalyptic portrayal of the world is lackluster, as not only it's nowhere near as desolate as it should, but also no corpses can ever be seen, save for some in plastic bags at specific locations. Animals aren't mutated while structures, buildings and so-forth appear blemished by time but mostly undamaged. Clearly the Developers have no idea, whatsoever, how a nuclear apocalypse would actually affect the world and its infrastructure. For a game betting it all on atmosphere, the visuals may even do the part, but the writing doesn't. The various notes found in the world prove uninteresting most of the time, fail to recant the stories of those who came before in any involving manner. The protagonist himself is a cringe bag of one-liners that tries to be funny but, most of the time, just sounds like a frustrated basement dweller scorned at every minimal impasse.
General Gameplay
The main concern at all times will, of course, be survival. Several gauges like hunger, thirst, radiation and more will constantly deplete, ensuring death when zero is reached. To keep them at bay, a constant scavenging work needs to be done, opening the numerous containers scattered in each level, or simply picking up whatever supply lies scattered around, such as drinks, food, iodine pills. Nourishment may be contaminated, and needs to be scanned with a Geiger counter each time - a dull task, when you have to do so every single time for each individual piece. Many containers, doors, lockers will be secured, needing lockpicks to open them, in a well-known minigame. The other objective will be getting to the next area, which usually entails finding the right set of keys, passwords, resources or whatever else, in order to make your way though. Building a campsite is often a requirement to do so, with rare resources like bedrolls, camping stoves, hay bales and more being scattered throughout each map, often without a logical sense or any hint about their location. Prepare to explore every inch, as guidance after the first few levels becomes non-existent. While the survival needs won't be much of a threat for the accurate looter, searching for the key items will prove painstakingly boring, as the Devs often decide to place them in devious, extremely hidden locations that don't make any sense at all, or bar them behind puzzles with obscure solutions. Passing over and over already-seen locales to find the proverbial "needle in a haystack" will be your daily routine. Despite the presence of some variations like timed sequences, chases and stealth parts, these are extremely limited in duration compared to the total gameplay which is, for 95% of the time, the same slog copied over and over. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2796978068
Combat System
Only much later will you get a hold of firearms, to fend off animals and other more sinister threats. Headshots generally dispatch all enemies instantly, however guns prove difficult to aim due to sensitivity issues and bullet trajectory being slightly offset. Also, bullets disappear after a certain range, so forget long-range engagements. Firefights prove basic, against melee-only enemies: backpedaling while shooting often does the job, and ammo is plentiful where there's a need for it. An addition that feels welcome after hours of painful redundancy, but mediocre onto itself.
Puzzles
Mainly involve deducting safe combinations from notes or the environment, repairing circuit boards with resistors, or cracking computers like a true hacker. It's quite hilarious that our protagonist seems to know enough to be able to hack military computers or repair complex circuits, however the game doesn't actually explain how these puzzles work at all, or at best, sparingly. Prepare to be frustrated at incomprehensible circuits or password-forcing tools that don't have any hint on how to approach them, while your survival needs (and your patience...) drain constantly. The safe combinations aren't any better, oftentimes requiring you to find insanely-placed hints or operate matrices / binary conversion, which is far from common knowledge - you will, definitely need the aid of Internet to gather such notions at some point (I used a binary to decimal converter, for instance). Puzzles may vary in shape or size but are always the same four types all the time, for 24 hours, on top of everything else already mentioned. The epitome of dullness, truly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2797809012
Well, I've put a little over 8 hours into the game by now, and until 1 hour ago, I really wanted to give the game a positive review. That changed because suddenly I'm stuck in an endless death loop and there is no escape. Without posting spoilers, I got to a part where you need to hack a computer to activate a pump, so you can safely leave some subway tunnels. While heading out, there is a cutscene. As soon as i get the controls back, i have about 10 seconds left before i'm running out of health and die. I've tried many times to escape, eventually finding enough items to craft medics, but there's no crafting station or camp that I can reach before my time runs out. Before that happened, I wanted to say that the game has a really pleasant end-time atmosphere, nice graphics, an inviting world design and very decent voice-acting. Following the story was interesting enough to keep me playing, even if the survival mechanics and wayfinding were annoying right from the start. The character needs water and food literally every few minutes. This feels excessive, but if you somehow manage to keep this needy man alive, you'll also have to deal with his declining health. On top of that, there is radiation in the air. As a result, you will need to take iodine pills regularly and you will also need to scan every type of food and water that you can find, while half of it is radiated and unusable. Sounds hardcore, right? It is. Then there are the puzzles. Some are explained, some give you a scheme with no further or helpful explanation. Therefore, you basically try to force your way through it until you solve it, or rely on a guide from someone who also struggled to solve this puzzle. If that's not entertaining enough, while you're in the puzzle menu, your health / food / water needs keep decreasing. So, sometimes you'll finish a puzzle, but because you took too long, you'll die. Of course for masochistic people this must be wonderful, but for a casual like me that's hell and certainly not adding fun to the gameplay experience. It sounds very negative overall, but with a few changes this could be a really nice game. All the developers would have to do, is add some proper difficulty settings, where we can change the characters needs from "super needy baby" to "regular human being".
Overall, the world design and level of world detail are very impressive, and close to an AAA release. I enjoyed the voice acting, and the storyline and atmosphere of the game made me want to play through it all. Sadly, Dead Man's Diary's major problem is its excessive difficulty. The built-in "dynamic help mode" is almost useless when it starts helping too late, or when you're struggling to find resources for a character that seems to burn 1.000 calories and 1 liter of water per minute. The puzzles need some better guidance or explanation. If the developers add a difficulty setting, I would totally recommend buying it, but not in its current state.
Saw a lot of negativity when i first purchased this game, but if you go into it with an open mind and know that you're going to be hunting for a lot of materials its a really fun game. Took me about 26 hours to beat so its a fairly big game. I like puzzles so this was right up my alley.
Dead Man’s Diary is a loosely narrative-focused survival game set fifteen years after a nuclear disaster. Players must explore the new post-apocalyptic world, find uncontaminated food and drink, create shelter, craft and solve puzzles in order to stay alive! Whilst it looks to be a promising game with an interesting concept, the reality doesn’t quite match up. The experience is first and foremost a grind and a frustrating one at that. Given the difficulty in obtaining certain resources and items and the sheer amount of time and effort it takes to progress even slightly, it is unsurprising that the game feels unfinished and unsatisfying. I was excited to play this game and really wanted to like it but unfortunately, I cannot recommend it in its current state. Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAbNke8DJzVprpbTLBt0KP9V5iTLLoWeR Hello, how are you? I initially started playing this game, as I had to check some parts that were assigned to me. Since I have a Channel on YT, I started initially with a Live Video, and barely made it past the First Stage. I am terrible at this kind of game, of observation, sense of direction, and memorization of places already visited/explored. This, yes, I am a garbage collector, I take everything possible from the game, and this game, believe me, deceives you, it hides some things very well. For the challenge, and because I was able to complete it, the grade is maximum. The graphics, we are already used to the standard TML and Unreal Engine 4, and they worked very well. I give it a 9. The game is very good, long, full of challenges, locations, has a story that is good, makes some sense, although I had the feeling that it was not explained everything that happened, but this can be for each one, like a book, use your imagination. Only the ending I found, for all the work, a little frustrating, but it satisfies in the sense of being entertaining, and thus relieves all the tension that this game, at least to me, caused. I don't get like those critics who judge if it's the company's first game in this way, Game is Game, it doesn't matter if it's the company's first time or not. My rating is 9. Do I recommend the game? I do not recommend, I invite you to watch some gameplay of the game, and YOU draw your own conclusions, do not get attached to the opinion of others. I will leave my Playlist, where I explored the entire game and got all the achievements, showing once again that I propose with my Youtube Channel, a book full of pages, not a mere Cartoon for children showing shallow things and exploring poorly the game. Finally, I wish you all, Mental Health. May you all take care of yourselves and always remember it. Be safe and take care. This game feels more like early access than a full launch game. its a beautiful game but it still needs a lot of work in my opinion.
I like a good survival game, something that calls for a bit of a challenge, but something that keeps you interested, but this one don't really hold ur interest, it just feels like your doing the same thing over and over but just in different places.
