5.5/10
TL;DR: RNG So torn on this one. It could have been absolutely stellar with some more effort. I was hoping for an experience more like Hex: Shards of Fate or Etherlords II or something (a single player deck building experience). It's slightly like that, but the entire thing is poisoned by being more like Slay the Spire. Still moderately fun though. Biggest issue is that you're at the mercy of RNG and there are too many DLCs... so it's too hard to make a cohesive deck.
Pros:
- Card art is absolutely fantastic. You can immediately recognize cards and easily distinguish between them - Music is rather good - When you know what's going on, combat is decent. It's fast paced if you want it to be
Mehs:
- Enemies just barely hover in place and never do anything else. Kinda weird
Cons:
- The entire game is just "pick one of 3 paths" over and over and over. Doesn't really feel like you're traveling or exploring or anything - Card text is tiny. Keywords/icons sometimes don't come up at all - Not enough feedback in combat. Not enough sound effects. Not enough visual effects - No combat log - "Deckbuilding" is kind of a lie. You don't have direct control, which severely damages the experience in a campaign as you're constantly at the mercy of RNG - Too difficult to create a synergistic deck - No area damage or enemy groups or anything. Only 1 enemy at a time

Really fun game, has some neat combos and I really like the way the energy works to be able to mix and match play styles
4.2/5 Great card neo-roguelike (advancement through loss) game. Modern graphics, decent mechanism, interesting DLCs (get all of them). Some interesting and complicated worm holes. Slightly fuzzy on a bunch of things which degrade from the score. For example, when going up a level there's no way to review one's character sheet. This means when one is choosing the most important upgrades in the game, you can't look at your current stats, "talents", etc. Very annoying. Also, the game has a bunch of bugs, though infrequent. The major bug is that after winning a battle, the reward screen blurs the background and no options appear. Most likely to occur when going up a level, which makes it very annoying. Also more likely if one has just beaten a boss. On the very plus side, quitting the game in that frozen-blur state, one can re-play the fight again and .. sometimes? ... the error doesn't occur. But if it does re-occur, around 90% of the time, the best work around is to do ANYTHING you can think of to try to change the seed. Solutions include simply opening the card list, resorting. But the best way to avoid the bug is any "real" choice in the game. A different monster, a camp, an opportunity, whatever. But this is a super annoying bug if one is trying to thread the needle on the game's most complicated and difficult paths. If the bug occurs while you're on one of the advanced 'secret' tracks (see sun tree twig), hours and hours of play can be completely lost to a stupid bug. recommended. Interesting and boring in just the right level. I'd give this a 4.5/5 if the horrible buggy problem didn't waste my time. [as always with all my reviews, Steam is mis-reporting my play time because i leave the game running when I close my laptop and Steam continues to count "hours of play" even if I haven't touched the game in days. I think I've played about 200 hours, Steam says 1100 hours.]
Really tight fun gameplay.
I've played this game at least a half hour a day since 2021 when I bought it on Google Play. When I decided to become a sheep and got an iPhone in 2023, I bought the game again. I enjoy it so much that I decided to buy it on Steam as well. It's a daily game for me, whether I'm playing it when watching some dumb streaming show, or winding down in bed at the end of the day, I play a run or two. It's not lost any enjoyability for me since then. So when I say I think it is worth buying, I mean it. I've bought it three times without regrets. I still go back to my Google Pixel and buy any new expansion that comes out for the principle of things. The model of having a free expansion between paid expansions is very player friendly. The lack of pay-to-win microtransactions is absolutely incredible in today's gaming climate. The way the developers interact with people on the Discord is great and reinforces the fact that they give a damn about the player base. The way they actually listen to feedback or bug reports or ideas is refreshing. If you like deckbuilders, buy it. If you like solid games without ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ money-grasping, buy it. If you like roguelikes, buy it. If you like video games, buy it.
If you like a straight-forward deck-builder with lots (tons) of options, very different-feeling classes, and some neat card-based story interactions, you can do worse. I've been playing this exclusively on Steam Deck, and the controls are sometimes a little wonky. Meta-progression is very satisfying: that said, starting from scratch with my second class (Arcanist) demonstrated how much my own skill has grown since starting the first, subsequently-maxed-out character (Warrior). Player skill matters, deck constitution matters, and remembering which cards to play first, second, third matter a great deal.
