About
DarkStone Restoration brings Delphine Software's beloved 1999 action RPG back to modern PCs, rebuilt by Paul Cuisset, creator of the original. This isn't a remake. It's a restoration: the same merciless combat and hand-crafted gothic atmosphere, made to feel right on today's hardware without losing what made it special.
Built by a core team of four, Darkstone arrived in 1999 as one of the first action RPGs to bring the genre fully into 3D. A quarter of a century later, its creator returns to rebuild it single-handedly, and give Darkstone the version it always deserved.
Long ago, the corrupt monk Draak turned against Kaliba, goddess of life and nature, and reshaped himself into a dragon to drown the world in darkness. The only thing that can stop him is the Time Orb, forged from Kaliba's tears and shattered into seven crystals scattered across the four lands of Uma. Recover the crystals, rebuild the Orb, and descend into Draak's lair to end his reign.
Build your champion from eight characters across four classes : warrior, mage, thief and priest , each with its own strengths, combat style and feel.
Grow your arsenal and spellbook as you adventure: dozens of weapons, spells and talents to discover.
Dungeons, quests, monsters and loot are randomly generated, and five difficulty levels keep the challenge alive. No two descents are ever the same.
Buddy mode. Darkstone always let you raise two heroes and switch between them. Now hold a single button to take direct control of your companion mid-fight, reposition them, aim their spells, chain a combo, then release to hand them straight back to the AI. Coordinate both heroes in the very same fight, something the original never allowed.
Shared-world couch co-op. The original only offered networked play, with two separate worlds and two inventories. The Restoration adds brand-new couch co-op: one world, one save, two players on the same adventure. A second player drops in to control your companion whenever they like, and drops out just as easily. Playing remotely? Steam Remote Play Together has you covered.
Hardcore mode. One life, no coming back. When your hero falls, the run ends for good. A permadeath challenge with its own dedicated leaderboards, for players who want every decision to carry real weight.
Legacy mode. A dedicated mode that restores the authentic 1999 look and feel for purists.
Choose your companion's brain. For 25 years, your companion ran one fixed, generic AI. Now you decide how it thinks. Pick a ready-made behavior (tank, mage, skirmish, support) and it plays smart right away, no code. Reshape it to fit your style, or write a whole new one, visually with Unreal-style blueprints or in JavaScript, with live hot reload and a real debugger. Then share your creations on the Steam Workshop, and play with the community's. Every step is optional: most players just pick one.
Automate your quality of life. The same tools can keep your buffs up, drink potions on a threshold, and swap loadouts on a key. They never target, move or fight for you: combat always stays yours.
Native 64-bit modern-Windows build with improved stability, modern displays and resolutions, borderless windowed mode and a configurable frame-rate cap.
First-class controller support across every screen: auto-targeting, target cycling and lock, DualSense.
Reworked spell system with a quick-access spell bar, plus deep inventory quality of life: automatic gold pickup, optional auto-sort, quick-equip, item gifting and more.
Clearer fonts and HUD, readable quest journal and map, and modern lighting and effects: dynamic shadows, SSAO, bloom, procedural grass and tunable volumetric fog.

Bon jeu !

What’s with the game's optimization? Why is the FPS dropping on a modern PC for a 1999 game? Pls fix it is
26 years have passed since i played Darkstone for the last time And It's still fun to play as a remester. Game mechanics feels a bit outdated but it's ok. Just like in old times you have to put an end to the infamous Draak fellow 4 classes, item grinding, solo and coop, dungeons and quests and that famtastic title song (don't forget to toss a coin for the bards in town)
I was so excited when I seen this. game doesnt take well to the graphical upgrades. it struggles. especially when you push it. played for 2-3 hours without many problems but after so long the game starts acting weird. had a couple crashes. I'm so so happy that this is happening tho. it's not even released yet and i am having a blast with it. I can't wait to see what updates bring. mostly looking forward to online co op. EEEEEEE Thanks Team!!! been waiting a long time
While I haven't played much of it yet, I do like what I have played. It feels very much like the original, but a little smoother and I think even a bit faster with combat movement and animations. It was bought on pure nostalgia, but it feels like they are trying to make the experience worthwhile.
I have always loved Darkstone. I first got it on the PSone many years ago from my local grocery store for $10. 20+ years later, it is still one of my favorites that I have revisited time and time again. I have gotten the original running on Linux, a Chromebook, and my Steam Deck. I have gone as far as creating Steam Controller configs for playing. And this version, is just better. I have really enjoyed my time with revisiting this game. I never expected this to get a remaster/restoration experience and I always assumed that one of my childhood favorites was dead and only going to live through those who kept it going. When I heard about this, it was an instant buy, and I don't regret it for a second. I was able to pick up the characters and adventure that I had played a year or so again on my deck and I was able to keep it going with the next difficulty level. Everything came over easily by just copying my save data in, and now it is all synced up to the cloud. The control for controller feel good too, but did take me a bit to relearn, but now I am doing well. I am still not happy about the AI that my companion player uses, as my warrior keeps running into mobs and dying, but since there is AI scripting support, I will see if I can change that to my liking as well. If you are still reading this, and can't tell, I absolutely adore this game, and have for 2 decades, and I am sure will continue to for many more. Buy this game, support Paul in his efforts to restore this, and keep the amazing hidden gem of Darkstone alive!
I finished the demo with my buddy over the weekend. Immediately bought the full version so we can continue this coming up weekend. This game is fun. It's not perfect. It's not amazing looking but it is the most important thing a video game can be: FUN! I remember getting the psone disc at Best buy for like 5 bucks or something back in the day and played it quite a bit. I had no idea at the time that there was a PC version. The buddy system is awesome. The controller scheme is intuitive and it's just fun to dungeon dive. It reminds me a lot of gauntlet legends and it looks like some of its original DNA spilled into the OG marvel ultimate alliance... I wish enemies respawned in full force after clearing dungeons. I hope this restoration gets a serious cult following and that the game ecpands. This is really something special.
