D100 Dungeon Computer Companion

Hello! And thank you for checking out this review. Before we get to the main body of the review for the D100 Dungeon Computer Companion I feel I should make a few things known: I play a good bit of D100 Dungeon in pencil and paper form. I make overview, review, and tip videos covering D100 Dungeon on YouTube. I purchased this product with the intent of spending a good bit of time with it and writing a review. I value my time and money. All that being said, lets begin: The D100 Dungeon Computer Companion is a program that essentially automates and tracks the D100 Dungeon Solo Adventure Game experience to include fully managing the player’s Adventure sheets, Map, Combat Encounters and all dice and Table rolls. The program also guides a player step by step through each phase of a turn. With a D100 Dungeon Solo Adventure Game core rule book for reference and the D100 Dungeon Computer Companion app, a player is able to run a digital D100 Dungeon experience. I have found the digital gameplay experience provided by the D100 Dungeon Computer App to be accurate and equivalent in all respects to the D100 Dungeon pencil and paper gameplay experience. So much so that there is compatibility between the two: being able to fully edit the digital character sheet allows players to “import” their pencil and paper characters into the digital realm. I was very excited when I discovered this, and was quickly running quests with my already existing characters. And i can always edit my printed sheet if I want to “bring my characters back out” turning my printed character sheets into “physical save files” One thing I noticed right away with the D100 Dungeon Computer Companion is the speed at which I can do all basic functions of D100 Dungeon, from creating characters, playing quests, mapping and combat encounters, market phases etc etc. It is no exaggeration that I am able to play 4x-5x the speed over pencil and paper easily. It is so great to be able to complete all 5 Dungeon training quests in the time it would take me to do 2 in pencil and paper! The time savings are great, as they allow me to 1) play more D100 Dungeon 2)Play D100 Dungeon when I otherwise wouldn’t have had the time to do so while still getting other things done. As a gamer, video creator, and father I value my time and cannot add an extra hour to a day, so for the money the time savings this D100 Dungeon Computer Companion provide are great. I am also able to more quickly develop my characters. The D100 Dungeon Computer Companion is great on a laptop as the portability and ease of placement and setup allow a player to leave a game running in the morning and play a turn every few minutes while drinking their coffee. With the digital experience open i am able to integrate D100 Dungeon into my idle time during my daily routine, something I could only do with the pencil and paper on weekends. I am looking forward to the expansion content being added to further flesh out this digital experience. The developers are very proactive to the point of being aggressive at addressing bug reports, and I am happy to say that the reviews stating “many bugs” are outdated at this point as I found the program to be reliable and trustworthy. It is apparent that there is a great effort to keep all the cogs turning in the right direction and development is active and ongoing. All in all I am VERY SATISFIED with my purchase of D100 Dungeon Computer Companion. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you like playing D100 Dungeon and would like to play more you owe it to yourself to pick up the D100 Dungeon Computer Companion. The time savings and efficiency in play are game-changing.

I want to give this a thumbs up, I really do but I can't at this time. While the interface is a little confusing at first once you figure it out, it's very simple and easy to use and helps run thru a session of D100 that might take you 2 hours in 20 minutes. It helps in a lot of ways. HOWEVER, at this time there are many game breaking bugs that corrupt and crash your character files forcing you to start over and over and over again. I've tried 7 different characters and each time the character became broke due to bugs/crashing before even finishing the 3rd quest. Also I have some concern about the auto roller but you can solve that by manually rolling dice and inputting the answers if you want. I hope that the developer of this game continues to fix and update as I want to change this to a recommend but at this time can not with the game breaking bugs.

If you enjoy the pen and paper version of D100 Dungeon, this is a great utility. I wouldn't categorize this a game--if you don't own the D100 Dungeon v3 rule book, this won't be of much use to you--but it's a great play aid if you don't have the space or time to draw out dungeons by hand, or don't like flipping through the book to find tables (though you might want to keep the PDF rules handy because this utility does not contain the full text of the tables). Also, the dev is very responsive to questions and bug reports. I had one crash and found a couple of bugs with the way things are calculated or recorded on the character sheet, and the dev fixed them both quickly. Again, if you play the paper version of D100 Dungeon and wish you had a digital way to manage your character, make die rolls, and do mapping, this is a great utility. You do still need the paper or PDF rules though.

This is a helpful utility for playing D100 Dungeon. To get the most out of this utility you'll want the D100 rule book that contains information about setting up a character, but also the full text descriptions of the locations and results of searches. The game runs using die roll tables, so this utility means there is so much less page turning. Rolls can be made automatically, or you can enter your own dice rolls, or even fudge rolls ;-) The reimagined map tiles are very good, but you can opt to use the orignal set. Being able to print the level out at the end is a great idea. I was hesitant about buying this as the reviews were poor, but I love the game so I took the plunge. I have played nearly 2 hours, which included a full level to completion, and have not had any problems. Some reports are of corrupted characters, so at the end of an adventure I am copying the character XML file. I look forward to playing more of this, although the career of my first character looks like a short one...

I've played the PnP D100 Dungeon since it was released. I have the based game the all the expansions. When I saw this program I knew it would be great. As a first release they have made a great attempt at keeping the program as close to the PnP version making game play a breeze. I'm looking forward to the continued iterations by the developers to improve the UI and eventual add the expansions into the program. Thumbs Up for me

When I first purchased this companion, to be honest, I wasn't very impressed. The recent updates and the two DLCs have greatly improved the companion. I am REALLY hoping that there will be a DLC for Book 4. (Even better DLCs for Book 6 and D100 Space!!) In my opinion, you do not want to try playing without the DLCs. I think my main gripe now is that you really HAVE TO have AND read the books as you play. Notably the text from the F table and G tables are really critical to understanding what is going one as you play. I think it would be nice if the log provided a little bit more information. Finally, some minor complaints with the PDFs. Why do the PDFs come out as A4? Why do they have a faint gray background (wasting toner when printing)? And why don't the labels for the Oil and Food pips on the adventure sheet show up in the PDF or in game?

The Companion is a tool to speed up D100 Dungeon play, and it does its function well enough. If your looking for a standalone game this is not for you, since you need the D100 Dungeon book to play. If you get the DLC's you will also need the respective book, in order to use this program. The program helps with the booking element of the game, dice rolling, along with displaying the table results of your rolls, and generating the map. For the soloist looking to speedup the session, and have a digital record of your session this tool will aid with that.

A less-than-perfect playing aid for the solo dice game, d100 Dungeon. Make sure you have the PDF handy of the actual game or most of this program will not make sense. That aside, this is an excellent Companion that helps you in playing the game. I just decided to try D100 Dungeon today and stumbled upon this program when I googled if there was a helper/automated assistant for it. Kudos to the developer and hope you continue iterating improvements into this wonderful app. Thanks!
