9/10 3D sliding puzzle with some really neat mechanics in its bag of tricks. What is it: A 3D sliding game, you play as a white cube trying to reach the black cube, moving in any of the 6 directions until you hit an obstacle. The basic 2D version of this genre is usually boring, with few titles that I enjoyed, but I found this one to be quite amazing. After a few simple levels gently introducing the movement and goal, it gets fun and challenging. There are 3 main chapters, each with its main mechanic: the first one is just basic 3D movement, with extra blocks: movable boxes, breakable bricks, switches and toggled blocks, stopping points, and a few others introduced in the next chapters. The second one allows you to switch between 2D and 3D, with FEZ-like movement: if it seems on the same line as you, you can move to it, even if in 3D they are not actually aligned. The third one allows you to control more than one block, freely switching between them. Plus two extra big levels bookending the game, and seven special cubes hidden throughout the entire game that you can collect. Levels are further grouped into little nooks that you unlock when you finish the previous one, with each nook having a kind of theme, like “how to break bricks”, “how to toggle switches”, or “how to destroy sticky blocks”. There are regular and hard levels, and while I particularly enjoyed the hard levels, I think the regular ones would appeal to any puzzle lover regardless of their skill level, since they are well designed as discoverable mechanics with a nice upturn in difficulty. Other than great mechanics and excellent levels, the game is generally well done, with good QoL, beautiful graphics and music, and good support from the dev. I strongly recommend this little gem. How hard is it: Easy to above moderate. How long is it: 102 levels and 2 extra long levels, 3-8 hours, levels are unlocked in batches, hard levels are optional, but all the regular levels must be solved before unlocking the next batch, there’s no level skipping or Unlock All feature. Level design: Excellent, great mechanics, very interesting levels with good themes and difficulty range. Each level is unique. I feel that a few levels may have unintended solutions, but that's rare. Quality: Excellent. Great puzzles. Undo, but a fast restart is missing. Interesting level select with secrets in it. Great controls, fully rebindable keyboard and controller. Basic audio/video settings. Cloud saving and good achievements, multiple save slots, progress reset. Feels fast and responsive, doesn't hog the CPU. Worth the price: Yes. Most positive aspect for me: Excellent puzzles. Most negative aspect for me: No fast restart. What would make it better: Tighten up the few levels with unintended solutions. Make it easier to recover after wandering off in the level select. Add a way to quickly reset the current level. Also consider: IceFitter, great sliding game with interesting mechanics, but in 2D. FEZ, rotating 3D within 2D puzzles, but as a platformer. At first glance Cubicatch seems to be a simple puzzle game, with the objective being getting the white cube (the player) to the black cube (the goal of each level). However there is more to it. Especially in the way the game introduces new mechanics each set of levels to keep it from getting repetetive and that in my opinion is refreshing. The puzzles in this game also feel very thought out and there's a little over a 100 of them. But even so it won't take you too long to finish them which is a welcoming quality. Some of the hard levels were actually hard as well, at least for my brain. Overall the difficulty was very balanced. Some pros: Smooth design, runs great and the gameplay is quite seamless. The soundtrack is decent and goes well with the relaxing theme of the game. The puzzles are all well designed and the game offers new takes on the puzzles. One big thing I liked which made the game a lot more interesting is the ability to change perspective between 2D and 3D to be able to solve many puzzles. The game is reasonably priced and offers good value for its content. Some cons: The settings include sound, graphics and key bindings, however adding a sensitivity settings for the camera movement would be cool. In the beginning it felt quite fast moving the camera around but I got used to it very quickly, although I would only consider it a very minor "issue". Menu navigation is very cool in the way that you navigate like you would as if you were during actual gameplay. However this also makes it less efficient in my opinion and can be annoying when you simply want to mess with the settings real quick. Misc: I came across a somewhat noticable bug while playing. While playing in the 2D perspective, if you move the cube and at the right time switch camera view you can make the cube move in a way it is not supposed to. Which makes you able to get around certain obstacles way more easily than actually figuring out the intended solution. But this only worked on a very few levels. Personally for this type of game I would give it a 8/10. Cubicatch stands out for its uniqueness and polished feel. There are only a very few things that wasn't 100% to my liking but those were very minor. Also big props for being a solo developed game. If you're looking for a good puzzle game which you won't spend way too much time with but still feel like you're being challenged then I definitely recommend this at full price or on sale.
an incredible game boasting over 100 unique levels, many of which are incredibly challenging. there are two different endings; one normal and the other a hard ending for those who beat every hard level in the game, which there are 25 (not including the last hard level) there are also seven hidden collectibles (cubi) that are hidden throughout the level selectors, and also one hidden inside a hard level near the end of the game. of these i was unfortunately unable to obtain cubi #3 because for whatever reason i cant seem to find a route to it - coming back to this review after getting cubi #3 and its quite out of the way compared to the rest of them, where you can actually see their paths lol the main movement mechanic of this game is something reminiscent of a sokoban puzzle, although it does work slightly differently, yielding some similar bonus mechanics to that of patricks parabox. even though i am upset i couldnt get cubi #3, i still think this is an excellent game well worth the price, considering it is around a ~3 hour playthrough (including the hard levels and both endings) something i forgot to mention originally in this review was the sound design & music. holy god, this music kept me going through the harder levels in the game. it was so calming and atmospheric. the sounds also fit in the game perfectly and gave really fun feedback to my inputs. also i should probably mention that when a new mechanic is introduced the game throws a couple simple levels at the player that could teach even a small child how they work almost effortlessly.
Accessibility report - No accessibility options - Very low contrast and bright colors - Not payable for people with low vision Cannot comment the game because I refunded it for the reasons I stated above.
Deciding to force the player to only navigate menus using the game's own mechanics was a bad idea. For example, in almost any game, if you wanted to change the music level from 100% to 20% and then continue the game you'd maybe have to click a mouse button maybe 5 or 6 times total. Something like clicking Options, then Audio, then using a slider to set the music level, then Back once or twice, then Continue/Play. Since you're not allowed to use your mouse in this game, here's the button input required in Cubicatch to achieve the same result, starting in the main menu: S to aim down space to move space to move D to aim right space to select Settings *wait for screen transition* D to aim right space to select Audio *wait for screen transition* A to aim left space to move to 100% space to move to 80% space to move to 60% space to move to 40% space to move to 20% S to aim down space to confirm setting W to aim up space to move D to aim right space to move space to move space to move space to move space to move W to aim up space to hit the Back button *wait for screen transition* D to aim right space to select Continue
Easily the best puzzle game I have ever played! You can tell how much effort has been put into every detail of the game. Very satisfying when you figure out how to solve the harder levels! Incredibly well designed, very good looking and polished game.
A cool puzzle game, really liked the 2D / 3D mechanic!
Really easy puzzle game, fun puzzles and intuitive
Excellent puzzle game. There are limited degrees of freedom, so it's never terribly hard, although still levels tricky enough that when you figure it out the solutions feels satisfying!
