A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

Fun puzzles, good combat, great art and music, a massive amount of side content to interact with, and to top it off a great story with great characters that are easy to fall in love with. Highly recommend, including the DLC.
Great game with great references. Can't believe they put my boy Simon in the game.
its an amazing game.. and i personally enjoying it a lot .. i am in mid game rn and i feel like story is pretty long but overall its geat ...it lets u feel that u are playing an MMO even tho its completely offline
I honestly don't know anymore. We live in a strange world where major companies with millions of dollars can't manage to make a game that’s even halfway decent, yet indie developers release works of art and charge peanuts for them (IN A CAVE WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS). Just explain to me how do they manage to flesh out a mute girl using nothing but a few dozen emotion sprites so effectively that I, a grown man, find myself sitting there with teary eyes, genuinely worried about her? A fantastic game. In terms of gameplay, it’s heavy on both action and puzzles. Surprisingly, the puzzles are challenging enough to make you think, yet not so tedious that you feel compelled to look up the answers. It might not be for everyone, but it’s definitely worth giving a chance.
Man this game is PEAK definitly the most underated game of all time. Its on my top 3 favorite games and its crazy to me not a lot of people know the game
I did not expect this game to be such a masterpiece. This is an action-combat and puzzle heavy rpg set in a fictional MMO called "Crossworlds", where you play as Lea, a player who has lost her memory and needs to get it back by simply, well, playing the MMO. Or at least it seems that way at the beginning... pros: - the story is outstanding. All characters are written so well and there's plenty of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. - the main character Lea is, hands down, by far one of the most loveable and charismatic protagonists I've ever seen in 30 years. Despite being almost mute, her avatars expressiveness adds so much to conversations. Masterful writing, 10/10, Lea! Hi! - the music fits the situations perfectly well and enhances every moment dependent on the situation. Great use of leitmotiv, especially Lea's theme is awfully sweet and describes her personality so well - also great sound design, attacks feel powerful and even just cutting bushes for materials sounds nice - lovely artstyle and animations. I was a bit unsure about the character designs at first but they grow on you pretty fast - combat takes a bit to get used to because it's a bit complicated at first, but it's a lot of fun, very snappy and challenging - great atmosphere, thanks to how NPCs behave and chitchat it gives you a bit of that MMO vibe. Some of your companions have different nationalities, which enhances said vibe cons: - a little bit too many puzzles for my liking. Especially the dungeons wouldn't need that many puzzle rooms imo - the isometric artstyle doesn't go well with jumping puzzles. Often enough you miss your jump because it's sometimes hard to estimate heights. Can be a bit frustrating sometimes - "Blazehoof / Bull on Fire" bossfight was awful, I had to look it up how to beat that one. All other bossfights are fine though - you need to be a bit willing to grind here and there for XP or materials, but it's not bad The game is very puzzle heavy so check first if you like these kind of things: - a lot of jumping puzzles - tricky (but good) dungeon puzzles. You sometimes feel very smart once you've solved them, which is great - boss mechanic puzzles Easter Eggs/Pop Culture References: often enough, games add some pop-culture references which either don't stand the test of time or get too much into your face, but CrossCode isn't one of them. There's plenty of easter eggs and references to pop-culture, games, MMOs or anime in CrossCode but they're added smoothly to the game so it doesn't distract you too much and delivers that little smile or laugh whenever you discover it. And that one german meme in the dlc...oh Junge, you did NOT just do that :D There's nothing else to say. This game is a masterpiece and I loved every second of it, everything was just made with so much love and care, I can't help but being a bit sad that these 94 hours are already over so fast. And Lea is the most loveable mute character I've ever witnessed. Thank you for your outstanding work, Radical Fish Games. I really deeply enjoyed this game and am already eagerly awaiting version 1.0 of your next title: Alabaster Dawn!
Experiences like these are the reason I would prefer there is an option to express "mixed feelings" when it comes to write a review since I want deeply to like this game and there undeniable qualities and at the same time there are aspects of it that disappoint me and give me a sour taste in my mouth. I am writing this as I finished the second main dungeon but I am not committed to continue, so what I am about to write is based on solely what I experienced until this point. The game is very beautiful in artistic terms, the sprites of the characters are very expressive and colorful with the right tones and shades and the aesthetic of the world is charming with its setting. A feeling that threw me back into the DS-era of gaming combined with the nostalgia aspect of MMORPGs. The soundtrack, while not the strongest, has some good tracks with my favorite being the snow village. On paper this game has everything I would like given that I grew up with these themes and this sort of presentation, however a lot of design choices push me back to enjoy it. While the combat is smooth and responsive with its good animations, I didn't find the feeling very good as a lot of enemies don't have clear visual indicators for when they're about to attack, apart from their sprites glowing red where it can be your chance to shoot in order to stun them. This was a problem when I was fighting groups and I had issues on keeping track of everything since the hit frequency of the enemies is high. You can customize these aspects in the settings but the fact the original difficulty was intended like this it's not reassuring. Most of my deaths were also caused by enemies projectiles that had the same color as the environment and that frustrated me a bit. Later in the game you unlock elemental forms that spices the combat and each element interact in a unique way with the enemies and the environment, I didn't like the "overheat elemental" mechanic where your character can overheat if you use too much of a specific form and some forms are essential to kill some enemies and bosses. While the combat isn't the best, I have to say that the puzzles were satisfying in their structure and design and. My main issue with them is that there were too much of the same thing in the dungeons and I wish there were fewer rooms so they don't overstay their welcome. In RPGs games I love to explore and exploration here is the most tedious thing I ever felt. Every biome and area that I have explored so far is filled with platforms and each of these have a specific altitude that it's not communicated in an effective way, not sure if it has to do with the way the shadows are set or it's the composition in general. Lot of heights and chests can be reached only if you find a specific point to climb that is located by backtracking a lot of screens and even after you managed to find that spot and climb it, it it's not very clear which direction to go after that and if you fail one jump you go back all the way to the start. All of that for an item or a piece of equipment weaker than that one you already have. Finally I didn't find the story that interesting as it has some serious pacing issues where you're introduced to a big menace of a villain only to be forgotten later barely mentioned and the dialogues and the characters weren't enough captivating to keep me hooked. There is clearly an audience for this game and I can see why people like this very much. I am just not a part of that.
