A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

Randomizing and clearing my backlog- 42/343 I’m gonna give this a thumbs up solely for the reason that I see this game has a lot of heart and can be a great game if you like this kind of game. For me, it’s just not it. I got frustrated 2 hours in. The combat is frustrating, I hate the puzzles, but again, that’s just me.

Amazing game, it looks like a old school rpg with the stereotypical blocky movement but honestly has one of the best control feel of any rpg ive played. The main contentious point in this game is definitely the amount of puzzles being a little too much but honestly all of the puzzles are created with testing your creative thinking instead of the classic developer placing blocks of puzzles together and calling it a "new area" or "trial" the enviroments are amazingly detailed and feel like a actual MMO and I LOVE how the areas have loads of side quests and special areas fetch quests that all overlap so you can get multiple quests done together. Also love how it is pretty difficult and the rival duels are really interesting, actually feels like a real player you're 1v1ing W game
CrossCode is just PEAK GAMING! 😤 I did not expect to sink so many hours into this game. I think I'm near the end of the DLC (which is also pretty great) with most of the achievements done. We're midway through 2026 but CrossCode is easily my game of the year contender. However... there is a caveat. Some arguments can be made why CrossCode might NOT click with you and I'll explain that later. First, I'll mention what's amazing about it: The story, the world and characters. Events take place in CrossWorlds which is like a VR overlay on top of the actual physical reality and people can log on into the game with their avatars. There's a ton of NPC's running around, doing stuff, making it feel like you're really connected to an MMO. I don't want to say too much about the story for obvious reasons but what I'm going to say is that CrossCode main themes can be very relatable and are accurately worrying in the context of our current technological climate and where we're going as a species. Of course, it's just a game but it can occassionaly drop some important dilemmas, especially near the end of the main story. I have always been drawn to challenging philosophical and moral issues and CrossCode certainly gave me something to think about. The characters are also great, and watching their relationships unfold is fun in itself, even if the main plot is not your thing. Aesthetics. Pixelart, soundtrack, sound effects are all amazing. UI navigation is smooth which is very important because there's quite a lot of menus to interact with and you'll be doing it a lot. Gameplay. Controls are incredibly polished, snappy and responsive. Tons of skills (that are freely switchable inside the circuit menu at ANY point in the game outside of combat, once you unlock them!), tons of sidequests that aren't just copy-paste fetching activities that you often see in actual MMO's. There are some simpler sidequests but most of them have some unique gimmick that makes them stand out from the rest. The combat is absolutely amazing. Fighting even normal mobs is already fun as hell but where this game truly shines are the BOSSFIGHTS. Most of the bossfights serve as a skill check to test whether you truly understand the mechanics and properties of the elements you're wielding. They will maul your face without a second thought if you don't pass the vibe check. And it only gets more insane the further you are in the game. I kid you not...
final bossfight in the Ku'lero temple
in the DLC was pretty much the best bossfight I ever experienced in a 2D game. It's absurd in the best way possible. But here's the thing... for the same reason why this game clicked for me, it might not for you. CrossCode is not an easy game. It can be really demanding, requiring not only skill and quick reactions but also logical thinking during its long and convoluted dungeons that are filled to the brim with environmental puzzles. The infamous
Faj'ro temple
is often mentioned as a bottleneck where many players simply give up. And I can absolutely see why. I took a break for a few months precisely because of this location. The other issue is the difficulty in perceiving differences in terrain elevation. Sometimes it is really difficult to tell whether you'll be able to make a jump and making a mistake sometimes means you'll be forced to backtrack a few screens. It's not a huge issue but I can see why less patient players might get annoyed at that. The solution is to always confirm the elevation by aiming. The line that shows up when you aim casts a shadow on the ground and that way you can precisely see where you'll land. You just have to get into a habit of doing that before making the jump. Also... I deduct one full point for
Gaia's Garden
existence. Getting all chests in that god forsaken area was an actual torture. You know that meme with Donald Duck sleeping with a smile on his face? Yeah, that's gonna be me if I learn that place is about to be hit by a meteor. But I digress. So, considering how much fun I'm still having after around 100 hours of playtime, thanks to the fact that I love challenging games and challenging puzzles, CrossCode is very close to being a masterpiece. I know that word get thrown around a lot but I genuinely think that. It's one of the best games I played and Radical Fish Games from that point onwards enters the pantheon of my favourite studios. I will be getting their newest project called Alabaster Dawn as soon as it leaves early access because it's already shaping up to be another banger.
Tedious ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ waste of time.
I really tried to like it but it's just not vibing with me. Long tuturioal, giant areas with no maps, long and tedious dungeons. I personally did not have any fun in the 11 hours I spent in it.
