A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

Reviews
Highly recommended. CrossCode gives a great combination of interesting puzzles, exciting combat, and an engaging and emotional story. I don't typically play a lot of RPGs since they either lean into punishing the player with their mechanics or the characters are just not relatable to me. But this game has relatable and unique characters and gives the ideal amount of punishments for dying, which is to say, basically none. # Gameplay * The dungeons were straight forward but still gave enough of a challenge through puzzles and combat * Each dungeon combat either introduced something new or created scenarios that made the fights interesting * Each boss fight was fun and interesting and expertly integrated the mechanics from the dungeons * Exploring the world was exciting and each sub-area was a platforming puzzle on its own * The side quests were interesting and typically gave a lot of flavor to the world # Story * Each of the main supporting characters have their own personalities * The random conversations that you overhear from background characters give more flavor for the world * It was fun being able to see the same re-occurring background characters * The main character is relatable and encounters many issues that can easily transfer to real life

I was an early Kickstarter backer, so I played it back when only the first region was available. It was impressive then. It has grown into an incredible game. Wokeness levels are low and don't compromise gameplay.
What's with me and so-called indie masterpieces? I've had so many of them turn out (subjectively) pieces of crap. For the record I don't deny the game's quality, just I couldn't enjoy it even a tiny bit from the very start to the final minute I played while trying to give it a chance. CrossCode tries to mimic MMO game loop elements offline, adding a story I assume turns out interesting into the mix. The game demands you grind and farm and prepare your gear before tackling story challenges, and offers you what seemed like an endless supply of quests to help with it. What the point is of aping MMO mechanics is beyond me, especially from the old school ones that almost seemed like jobs. Without the social element and the willing immersion into living an alternate life along with its mundane tasks, why would I want to simply sink a disproportionate amount of my scarce free time just as an admission ticket for the game's real content? On the bright side, the pixel graphics and music are excellent and feel like they were plucked from the 16-bit era. The hand drawn portraits are meh-ok, halfway between anime and cartoons is not a style I can enjoy. Also I can't explain why but the game had me flinching at wokeness I felt could come any minute (but it didn't in the couple hours I played). As for technical issues, the game is broken on HDR monitors forcing you to disable system-level HDR, or you can use a launch argument but the devs won't even bother to pin a notice in the forums. I also had issues when moving the cursor in the map, sometimes it would work fine, sometimes it would move a pixel at a time instead, forcing me to switch to mouse and keyboard to fast travel. I really don't recommend this game. Edit: Just to add, from watching reviews the game is very puzzle heavy. Hugely puzzle heavy. What little I got to see gave me the impression that puzzles would get old really fast, as they were pretty repetitive and iterations of the same mechanics.
surprisingly immersive, great story and characters, and really rewarding puzzles and exploration. One of the best games I have ever played. looking forward to more of this studio in the future!
10/10 game Great writing and an awesome story, combat is easy to pick up and fun to master, satisfying puzzles, and great visual designs with smooth pixel animations Overall was a blast to experience and play through
One of the only games that I think EVERYONE needs to play! It has everything! The characters are memorable and great, love them to bits! The story is amazing, combining both the game's story and the actual story worked better than I expected! The combat is some of if not my favorite in an action rpg, it's not braindead and the elements are fun to mess around with. The game just has so much for you to do as well, almost every area section has something for you to do. The side quests are fun for the most part, some are the rpg-generic quests, but the others have nice side-stories to them with fun gameplay tied to them. There's so much more to mention, but genuinely just play the game! It's too good not to experience!
Fast-paced and fun in its gameplay and heart-warming in its story. Definite recommend, but prepare for puzzles, there's a lot of 'em.
