WARNING! This is not a cute casual pixel indie game! It is a hard survival, almost horror, game. You must manage your resources, you can't kill everything. You must avoid enemies and traps, solve puzzles and manage your torch fuel. You will rage when you die 5 times in a row in some boss fight. But it is quite satisfying when you finally finish a hard map. The graphics, ambient sounds and music are awesome! Buy it if this sounds interesting to you :)
Review copy provided by developer It feels like there are more games with strong, beautiful art styles out now than ever before, and that’s great for someone like me that gets weak in the knees at some lovely pixel art. That’s what drew me to Courier of the Crypts, a creepy, meandering puzzler that sends you through the depths of ominous caves and catacombs with only a torch to light your lovingly-rendered way. I can’t help but assume that games with such care put into their visuals have similar care put into their designs, and from the onset that certainly seems the case with Courier here. It’s a charming, challenging journey to be sure, just one that sometimes seems hard-pressed to push past its central concept. You are an unnamed courier in an unnamed medieval land, sent by your stereotypically rude boss to deliver a missive to the priests managing a distant crypt. Following a brief journey montage and some cryptic (see what I did there?) introduction, you find yourself thoroughly lost in the halls of the dead. Fortunately, there’s a magic torch to help keep the shadows at bay as you find your way out. Unfortunately, those shadows are hiding some nasty critters and traps that don’t want to see you escape. As you navigate the depths, a nefarious plot begins to unfold around you, one that you might just be in an opportune position to do something about. That torch that I mentioned is a pretty big deal, and what most of the adventuring in the game is built around. Your journey is separated into top-down levels on an underground world map, each of which challenges you to reach the exit alive. Most of the levels are thoroughly steeped in darkness, with only a few errant torches or slivers of moonlight to navigate by, so your torch is key for getting around. It burns down, of course, so you can put it out when you don’t need it. But that fire is also the only thing keeping the critters of the crypts from bee-lining for your tasty flesh. And if the torch ever runs all the way out, you only have a few seconds to re-ignite it before some very light-averse ghosts decide to take out their aggression on you, fatally. The torch has other uses, such as showing hidden magic markings and triggering a few interactables, but it’s mainly there to put time pressure on your exploration and give you a resource to manage. There are no real safe solutions for keeping your torch topped off, either. Certain orbs around the levels can be broken for some quick fuel, and while checkpoint braziers will restore it indefinitely, triggering a new checkpoint destroys the old one so you’ll never have a permanent safe haven. Conceptually it’s a good way to keep the player moving forward, but it has its drawbacks. The margins on some levels can be pretty tight, limiting your exploration in levels with half a dozen secrets to find or more. Enemy behavior feels unnatural with this system too, the way enemies will break from their patterns and pursue you all over the level just for putting your torch out. And some of the puzzles are tricky enough that you may run out of torchlight before stumbling across the solution. To keep the game from just being a top-down puzzler (which might have been fine with more puzzles, honestly), there is combat with hucking rocks and fire jars at foes that you can’t otherwise avoid. This also leads to boss fights which, personally, I thought were fine changes of pace but could be frustrating for folks looking for a more low-key adventure experience. There’s loads of treasure to find in each level, often hidden behind secret passages and breakable windows, which can be spent on permanent upgrades to your torch. Collectible relics and notes also dot the levels, the latter of which reveal a sinister plot by the inhabitants of the crypt and your place in their machinations. It’s a decent story, but one with some odd twists and some dim-witted observations from your salt-of-the-earth protagonist. Honestly, I like what Courier of the Crypts is going for, but I don’t think it quite made it all the way there. I want to stress again that the art style and presentation is fantastic, sticking you in these grim, moody catacombs with all kinds of creepy ambient noises. Parts of the gameplay are solid as well, namely the exploration and puzzling. It just gets dragged down a bit by the emphasis on combat and the occasional challenge of managing your torchlight. They’re not bad inclusions, but they can be at odds with other parts of the design. What I’m getting at here is that Courier of the Crypts is a decent little adventure with a different sort of emphasis than most adventures, and I think it’s that emphasis that keeps me from really loving it.
Super well made and polished game, I just found the core gameplay to be a bit too repetitive and tedious after only an hour of playing. according to the stats screen I was 27% done with the game at about the hour mark so its also rather short. I have seen in the trailer and by skimming through youtube videos that there are moments of the game that do seem to mix up the gameplay a bit and look interesting, but in general most of the gameplay is very slow paced and not all that challenging or interesting. The torch and limited visibility mechanic is kind of cool at first, but gets annoying pretty quickly when you realize it means you are only gonna have about 3 inches of visibility on your screen for most of the time you are playing. Pair this with no map, and exploration just kind of ends up feeling like a bit of a chore. At least in the time I played there was also no dash/run movement options, so navigating through the game, especially when backtracking, can feel extremely slow.
Courier of the Crypts is a puzzle game with horror elements. The puzzles grow larger and more difficult as you descend into the crypt. So does the darkness and horror. Freaking blood rituals and spiders. Each level is a collection of smaller puzzles that you need to navigate. The problem is the crypt is dark. Your magic torch is awesome but it runs out of fuel. Once the fuel is out shades swoop in and kill you. It's an instant fail state. Turning off your torch is not though, and that's a viable strategy to conserve some fuel. The torch is a smart idea to force the player to rush a little through the game. Put the pressure on! Yet it's the oppressive darkness that makes Courier of the Crypts so amazing. At the start, the game gives you plenty of light. But as you go deeper it gets darker and darker. Some very dark rooms where you must use the torch. It can be stressful. This is a great game, especially if you like puzzle games. If you are looking for handcrafted, linear and somewhat short experience, look no further! To 100% this game it takes roughly 23h, but if you just want to beat it, it's more like from 4 to 6h. Puzzles are rather simple, but there's few boss fights where you have to think a bit more. All-in-all, this game doesn't have heavy RNG and opening all the achievements is rather simple as you don't have to wait event X to start or anything. There's tons of hidden locations and most fun I had was trying to 100% each location. At the beginning you are in unfamiliar place. Torch is running out and you are desperately seeking the next checkpoint. After initial playthrough, panic and rush are starting to fade as these levels are not that big to figure out. This is not an RPG, where you level up your character as you go (however, there are few shops). It's all about experience, going through dark passages, finding secrets, discovering lore and whatnot. It's rather simple, really. Well-crafted, highly atmospheric little game. Not completely satisfied with the combat system and pushing rocks in few parts can be tedious, but those are just minor complains.
Sadly went to the most common mistake with puzzle games: at the end it had to turn into a bad combat game.
Courier of the Crypts has great atmosphere, level design, and music. It is a game made with a certain vision in mind, which biases my opinion of it somewhat, since I tend to forgive many rough edges if I can tell someone poured their heart and soul into making a game. This is clearly the case with Courier of the Crypts. Some weaknesses in the game were certain enemy placements, which felt like unavoidable gotchas more than anything, and the need to grind for ammunition if one wants to go back and explore levels properly for secrets. And while the time limit imposed on using the torch brought a nice touch of tension to the levels the first time around, exploring levels after beating them (or the entire main story of the game) felt rather tedious. However, the devs have kept updating the game and listening to community feedback on Discord, and have already sanded off some of the mentioned rough edges. Whatever gripes I may have with the game are mere nitpicks, if anything, and overall it was a solid ten hours of fun. Well, maybe eight to nine hours of fun and a bit of frustration on top. But a good game nevertheless.
