During the First World War, a lone French soldier must navigate twisted trenches, scavenge for limited supplies and solve complex puzzles—all whilst fighting for survival in the midst of mankind’s most brutal and horrifying conflict. CONSCRIPT is a new historical take on classic survival horror.

Trenches swallow men War writes ink in frozen snow Duty breaks all hope
Absolutely incredible experience. Doesn't hold any punches when it comes to the actual traumas of war. Rarely ever get such a realistic depiction. Worth every penny. It does have jank of course and lord oh lord be ready for some backtracking. Game was everything id hoped it be though.

Conscript is a fantastic hidden gem of a survival horror game. Rather than typical sci-fi or supernatural fare, its horror comes from the claustrophobia, bleakness, and brutality of historically authentic trench warfare in the longest battle of World War I, the Battle of Verdun. Despite this setting, The story is also surprisingly emotional and personal, but told in a non-intrusive way that does not detract from the gameplay. Speaking of gameplay, Conscript also finds a sweet-spot between responsive combat/controls, while balancing ammo scarcity and classic survival horror inventory management. There is also a REmake Crimson Head-esque mechanic, where you are incentivized to burn bodies, lest they attract groups of rats, which can easily poison you if bitten, necessitating that you use valuable healing items for lack of care. However, my favorite aspect of Conscript are the masterful classic survival horror maps. Each map is a puzzle with several doors and different paths to unlock, dangerous enemies to navigate, and resources/secrets/lore to be found. Even better, its not just a single classic survival horror map, but several full-blown and varied survival horror maps that are interconnected with various shortcuts. To reference Resident Evil again, imagine if the Spencer Mansion, Raccoon City, and Rhodes Hill were all accessible to one another in the same game, and you would get Conscript's maps, which I absolutely love. In sum, Conscript is clearly a labor of love to both WWI history and old-school survival horror, and the dev completely pulled it off. Although I purchased during the Summer Sale, Conscript is one of those content-dense indie games for which I would happily pay full price. Final Note: I recommend playing with limited saves (and even without checkpoints). I did so on my first play through, and never found myself without ink-ribbons, but I think it really elevated the immersion for that classic survival horror feel.
A lovingly crafted game that pays homage to classic survival horror. Unforgettable atmosphere. Concise storytelling. High replay value.

Jesus. I went into this game, not sure what to think, I've researched, learned, and Believed i had a good understanding of the first world war, especially coming from the perspective of my family roots. I was mistaken. I understand that this is a work of fiction, that this story is fictional, but it put into perspective how... brutal WW1 was, or war in general. At first it was about survival, Kill those who wish to kill me, fight against those who want me dead. But soon enough, every body, every man on the ground screaming for help? for their mother? And all i thought was merciful was to put a bullet in their skull. Scavenging corpses and finding pictures of their loved ones, their hopes, their dreams, their children. This game went from a survival experience, to one where i think i lost my humanity, the Pixels on screen, became more than that, they became people with lives, people who were just as scared, just as terrified, people who just wanted to live another day, Andre was just like them. It doesn't matter who fires the gun, both sides are killers. Both sides are young men fighting tooth and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nail to live to see their families again, and if you were unlucky enough to survive, to see your family once more, You were forever stuck in Verdun, The Somme, Gallipoli, Isonzo, regardless of your flag you would never leave that place. I cant even imagine what that must've been like, Both my Great Great Grandfathers fought, One for the Canadians, The other for the French, I never got to meet them, and i don't know what they would have to say, All i know is that if war was anything like this beautiful, terrifying, Heartbreaking game, than I don' know how one would come back from that. Genuinely one of the most disturbing pieces of media i have consumed. This is something i implore anyone to play, at least once.
The game is insane. I love how it presented the psychological horror of war - without relying on monsters as manifestations of trauma, guilt, etc. - as well as physical threats that were authentic to WWI - brutal trench warfare, bombings, poison gas, rats... There's a sadness underlying all the shock and blood and gore that I see the devs took pains to include, which I apprecated. Visually it is very rich for a pixel-style game, and I thought the audio was really well done. I was surprised by how long the game was. I played CONSCRIPT as research for a project I'm working on and I finished the game feeling inspired. Highly recommend!
